it sounded all right through two walls, so what s the problem? the final words of two walls, the fast and very catchy leading track of dj marcelle s new record, sum up an aesthetic almost lost in today s musical climate, where often a pleasing attitude and overproduced music sadly rule, even in so-called alternative circles. the quote comes from the late mark e. smith (1957 - 2018), legendary frontman of the fall, and is taken from some of the conversations marcelle had with smith over the years. smith is referring to a recording process but for marcelle his words stand for something bigger.

while quite a few people are obviously still dwelling in the achievements of munich’s disco era during the 1980s, it seems that another major part of the cities partying scene travels to the same clubs every weekend. here they are getting fed with the plasticized tech house trax that everybody wants, drinking vodka red bull until they almost pass out and walk - if they are still able to - home happily, oversaturated by non-inventive, but good selling music. so far the cliché. fortunately, reality looks a bit different, at least for the lovers of uk bass. in order to make people aware of the city’s flourishing developments in this scene, the grandmasters of ruffhouse and jahmoni records have teamed up for a limited 10”.

for her third outing on the german label jahmoni, marcelle is as inventive and unpredictable as ever. the four tracks on the wittily titled psalm tree ep go from wild techno to abstract dub, and all bear that undefinable marcelle touch of freedom and imagination, which sets the dj/producer so apart from almost all of her younger peers. the ever-travelling dutch lady, who was one of the highlights of this year s nyege nyege music festival in uganda, toys with musical styles and expectations, both live and in the studio she has always deejayed more or less like a musician. this was amongst others recognised by faust founder member hans-joachim irmler, who between 2008 and 2014 released 4 marcelle albums on his klangbad label.

american musician aaron spectre turns up the volume with four tracks of jungle punk rock intensity, continuing his mission of uniting cultures at their roots. here we have four tunes of guitar, relentless amens, deep bass, and soulful soundclash vocals, ready to rumble your space of choice. also on the menu is a collaboration with fellow ragga junglist feyder, rounding out a brilliant ep which inspires and shakes foundations.

aketi ray are an all-acoustic dub-jazz group, playing original compositions grounded in the instrumental music of post-independence jamaica -ska, rocksteady, reggae, rockers, dub -but drawing inspiration and influence from ethiopian and us jazz, west african percussion traditions, all with the mind set of uk steppas. an outernational sound: kingston to chicago to addis ababa to dakar to london.
the sound of -from ever since- draws on the vibes and heritage of pre-electr(on)ic music, but gives that traditional sound new power through the use of dub techniques of reverb, delay and eq manipulation.

there are not many conventional rules in the world of dutch dj/producer dj marcelle/another nice mess, or they have to be her own, but which she is more than happy to break at any time she fancies. for the past 15 years she has been travelling around europe and beyond, playing her brave three turntable sets in front of often both stunned, surprised and euphoric audiences. she is an original, skilled mixer, with a very distinctive style of her own, avoiding most dj-cliches and stale rules.

glyn -bigga- bush began his production career with rockers hi fi in the early 90s, co-writing several studio albums, a host of remixes and the infamous dj kicks - the black album. in 2000 he went solo as both biggabush and lightning head, making albums for sonar kollektiv and stereo deluxe as well as many more remixes. his sound reflects his love of dub reggae, analogue synthesisers and intricate rhythms, with influences of samba, afrobeat, the deep dubscapes of rhythm & sound and most recently the more interesting end of 140bpm bass music. this ep is his first vinyl release since the late 00s and takes in a number of bass-heavy rumblers with classic biggabush twists and turns, starting with the steppas delight of mangrove monkey, relentless subs and skanks of sounds & blues, post-dubstep breaks on dash way com and finishing with a minimal 4/4 fx soundscape on footsie index.
