das legendäre jamaikanische label trojan records feiert bereits seinen 50. geburtstag und veröffentlicht mit »ska & reggae classics« eine neue compilation mit den größten hits des labels, nun auch auf 2xlp!
im juli 1968 eröffnete das jamaikanische label mit sitz in london, trojan records, das geschäft und innerhalb von monaten nach seiner gründung wurde der aufregende neue reggae-sound einem weltweiten publikum vorgestellt. im laufe der nächsten jahre stand trojan für eine reihe von weltweiten mainstream-charthits durch legendäre künstler wie desmond dekker, ken boothe, john holt, the maytals, bob & marcia und dave & ansel collins. zudem legte trojan den karrieregrundstein für die zukünftigen superstars des reggae bob marley, dennis brown und gregory isaacs.

das album aus dem jahre 1978 ist als lp-vinyl in limitierter auflage für kurze zeit wieder erhältlich! -return of the super ape- ist der abschluss der trilogie von den drei lps -scratch the super ape- (aka -super ape-) und -roast fish & cornbread- im zeitraum 1976 bis 1978 und wurde wie seine vorgänger in lee perrys studio the black ark produziert, arrangiert und abgemischt. die zehn stücke wurden mit dem musikern der upsetters eingespielt, die seinerzeit auch als interpret genannt wurden - auf den beiden songs -dyon-anasaw- und -tell me something good- kommt das gesangstrio full experience mit candy mckenzie zum einsatz. das frontcover wurde von lloyd robinson gestaltet und zeigt den riesenaffen als krass gebeutelte figur, die unter anderem das nachhaltig zerrüttete verhältnis von lee perry mit chris blackwell (island records) zum ausdruck bringen könnte.

die 2lp-vinyl edition volume 2 präsentiert 22 weitere essentielle dub-aufnahmen aus dem goldenen zeitalter des reggae von 1975 bis 1979, ausgesucht mit der nötigen expertise von der koryphäe steve barrow. die aggrovators waren die studioband des produzenten bunny lee, zu deren mitgliedern gehörten im laufe der jahre carlton barrett, sly dunbar, santa davis, robbie shakespeare, aston family man barrett, valentine tony chin, geoffrey chung, earl chinna smith, carl harvey, keith sterling, ossie hibbert, ian winter, augustus pablo, jackie mittoo, winston wright, tommy mccook, lennox brown, bobby ellis und skully sims. das frontcover zeigt den eingang zum studio von king tubby.
