roy davis, jr. s undaground therapy muzik label relaunches after almost 20 years with al zanders guidance ep. al zanders approach to his first ep of 2018 is as precise as it is whimsical. featuring 4 tracks showing zanders sheer versatile when it comes to making music. opened by piano-percussion track martha s revenge which is made so clearly for dance floors, followed by television, a chance for a closed- eyes boogie be it on a dance floor in the middle of a set, or on the sofa at home. on the b-side, likes for cash s comedic title is met in contrast with a piercing synth top-line and stripped back drums, with just enough of a bassline to sit in-between the drums and synths. closing the ep is guidance, a reflective and a chance for the ep to close as well as it would close a dance floor when the lights come on at the end of the night.

ulterior motive are finally ready to release their long awaited collaboration with drs, ‘hey judas’. instantly recognisable and yelled for in seconds, this track has been doing serious damage wherever it’s been dropped in the last few months. drs lays down a sweet 16, and twinned with um’s razor sharp beats and bass, it’s a deadly combination. the aa side showcases a true master class in modular madness, as the guys team up with technical bristolian wizard dlr. growling itself all the way to the front, this sizeable slab of bass and percussion brings the funk and the vibe to the floor, bringing that 98 sound firmly up to date. we’re only at 002 in the guidance catalogue and the bar has been resolutely raised. watch out, there’s so much more to come.

d ball s debut ep was an under-the-radar techno classic which appeared in a handful of stores back in 2002, it has since been fetching crazy money second hand & been the subject of much speculation about who s behind it. after some all ears sleuthing we managed to locate the label hq and were delighted to hear they had a new ep ready and pressed ! even better (dare we say) than the first release !

projections a.k.a. simon james and dan hastie have been getting busy in their la studio re-tweaking and redefining their future funk formula. the title track >southern girls< (a1) is a blinding distorted disco odyssey that comes off sounding like a righteous metro area remix of tom browns >funky for jamaica<! simon and dan keep the quality level at a premium on the b side selection >late nite< a slick, soul drenched electo boogie anthem that harks back to the classic 80s productions of artists like atlantic star or michael jackson circa >off the wall<. dynamic fender rhodes vibes, poppin percussion, and subsonic bass tones provide set the proper interplanetary funk agenda for new vocalists wades powerful falsetto soul stylings which are guaranteed to warm up any late night steppers set.

>dance to the music< recalls the vitalic spirit of yesteryear, laced with smoking disco loops, rubberband basslines and a cajoling vocal hook that sounds so bright you would swear it was crafted with pure sunshine. the dub reveals a sexy bassline and those signature soularis beats. on the flip the boys dish up a a slice of deep house pie with high noon, dedicated to that green, sticky substance. mellow chords and marijuana endorsing samples make this song the perfect way to start off your mix-tapes and live gigs. the chill-out mix is a beautiful 7 minute smokers delight, complete with spine-tingling strings and downtempo rhythms which will leave you more horizontal than a few perkies and some choice lager.
