the shadows is the new album from leeds-based six-piece tomorrow we sail. building on their debut release for those who caught the sun in flight (gizeh, 2014) over the course of three years, this new work combines perfectly the soaring atmospherics, gorgeously intertwined vocal harmonies and dramatic shifts in tone and dynamics that have come to characterise tomorrow we sail’s sound. yet, there is a new sense of urgency here. very much an album of its time, the shadows draws upon the same sense of connection to both past and present that defined its precursor but features storytelling that’s even more defiant and deeply personal.

like its predecessor, the record features seven songs but from the chiming guitars of opening track side by side it is clear that the stately pace of for those who caught the sun in flight has made way for a far more dynamic and driving energy, perhaps best captured in the righteous anger of the ghost of john maynard keynes. tomorrow we sail still invoke a keen sense of measured grace in their songwriting - from the sweeping, elegiac title track, through to the sparse, restrained, yet haunting beauty of winifred and to sleep. urgent, yet assured, the shadows demands your attention.

alter is the new album from belgium-based double bass player and electronic producer otto lindholm. divided into four colour-inspired, long-form movements, alter takes off from lindholms previous work a self-titled album released in 2015 on icarus records, and pushes the already abundant palette of sounds even further. this new work is more brooding and hypnotic. a deep, resonating bass is present - hinting at the likes of greek, chamber-doom merchants mohammad but perhaps with more attention placed upon textures and melody. the record moves at a funereal pace and opener fauve hits abyssal depths from the outset. a bowed melody is coaxed through the throbbing bass with dissonant harmonics drawing you in and holding you close. the ghostly beginnings of alyscamps create an overwhelmingly tense atmosphere where acoustic and electronic elements collide and evolve into a heaving, ceremonious drone. shafts of light emerge through the fog but the tone remains a haunted one. closer, heliotrope, strikes a more hopeful note. a lighter, more open feel emerges - bringing to mind early work of the rachels or perhaps deaf center.

french composer and ondes martenot virtuoso, christine ott releases her first full-length album since 2009 and her debut record for gizeh records. only silence remains is beautifully melodic and filled with mystery, seeing multi-instrumentalist ott performing on a variety of different instruments throughout the record.

caul is the new album from last harbour. based in the northern english city of manchester, last harbour play music with a dark, gothic heart yet their songs are always beautiful and transcendent. after working with producer richard formby (wild beasts, spacemen 3, ghostpoet) on two previous albums, the band took time out after touring to build their own studio in 2013. this new album was recorded in that self-created space over a year between 2013-4 and bears testament to a patient and detailed recording process that allowed time for experimentation and careful arrangement.

it has been four long years since glissando released the critically acclaimed >with our arms wide open we march towards the burning sea< and the duo finally return this november with a new record >the world without us<. the new material bares glissandos trademark of ethereal voices and tip-toing piano melodies but the overall sound is richer and more expansive. epic swells of strings and guitars sore above the drones and field recordings to create an intense yet fragile noise. this lp is a highly limited deluxe package of just 300 copies, including code for free mp3 download of the full album.

>a correction< is the new album from fieldhead and continues the dusty, bereft sounds of previous releases – they shook hands for hours (home assembly 2009) and riser (gizeh 2010). 2010 saw paul elam depart the uk for vancouver, canada and there is no doubt that the vast northern candian landscapes have influenced the new fieldhead material. the familiar tape hiss, scratchy, decaying atmospheres remain in place but with a correction elam has managed to sculpt a vaster, more expansive palate of sounds. minimalistic on first listen, a correction is a record which slowly unfurls on multiple listens to reveal subtle melodies and details that dont distract from the overal ambience but in fact set apart fieldheads music from many other, safer artists within the genre.

>hoping for the invisible to ignite< was recorded and mixed between paris, normandy (fr) and saint-margaret of antioch church in leeds (uk), these four haunting orchestral pieces were performed in the studio live, and re-recorded using a wall of sound process, adding the natural reverb of the church to the raw tracks. the dvd includes the super 8/16mm black&white film >as true as troilus< by jayne amara ross & a bonus live performance shot by alain grodard & rod maurice during the festival des nouveaux arts sacres at saint-eustache church in paris.
