one of the founding fathers of chicago house, himself a grandson to a dj and frequently alongside other greats such as ron hardy on the decks, gene hunt summons a 3-tracker for the midnight shift label. true house and techno direct from the source and in his own words, a rather ‘jungly’ take of it due to the tracks’ chaotic percussion. ‘feeling it’ takes you back to the original old school, with all the classic elements in place, it’s a house lover’s wet dream, 30 years after the fact. spector twists things up while keeping that pumping jacking groove a perfect intersection between then and now.scatter punches through the noise like a clarion call to arms - where are all our jacks and jackies at report to the dancefloor, please.

for our 8th release in the series, we ve invited another crazy motherfunker from the other side of the ocean. dj gene aka gene g-spot siewing besides being a crazy scratcher on the 1 s & 2 s and a brilliant radio show host for the liquid love show on cashmere radio, he s also a lifelong friend of our very own delfonic and oye records. gene presents a batch of classic disco re-edits, plus a lovely spoken-word introduction by the man himself. feeeeeeeeeeel his pleasure and never forget: if we can dance together, we can live together. and don t let nobody tell you different.

gene hunt is one of the few producers from the original wave of trax records signees that still flies the flag for chicago house with as much gusto as when he started. this is his second trip out on inner shift music, and it finds the us house veteran on impeccable form. -kayla dream- is a light, airy jacker defined by amorphous synth washes that match the mellow mood of the label. -distant voyage- is a truly standout track though, dealing in crooked rhythmic structures and channelling the techno side of hunt s muse. -open up your eyes- maintains the introspective mood, but this time welcomes some soulful vocal turns into the adventurous, machine-powered landscape.

one copy per customer! top cat is the next chapter in gene on earth s story. hurdling down a jet black road, the sun s rays bounce blindingly off the pavement when a chance encounter stops gene dead in his tracks. though it lasts only a second, not even long enough to say a word, he knows it s meaning. a sharp left turn is his only choice.

producer victor “ticklah” axelrod is back with another supple reggae delight. after the success of the inversions last collaboration with bob & gene, axelrod once again takes a seat in the producer’s chair, this time with a tune a little deeper in the catalogue. originally tweezed from the beautiful mo do tape boondoggle, back in ‘05 - ‘06, this single has been a long-time favorite of the daptone family.

landing as gene tellem s first record, -who says no- is a product of change. new relationships and collaborations emerged out of a time when familiar spaces in montreal were disappearing. this state of ambiguity, and improvisation inspired the freeform structures and subtle transformations heard in these tracks. while -moving in this way- and the title tune push forward with intention, -soul of man- floats between lush drones, a pitch bent lead, and a pair of haunting chords. -we were all being tested in different ways, and trying to figure out what would happen next...-

vor zehn jahren veröffentlichte daptone records zum ersten mal diese zusammenstellung mit ende der 1960er jahre nur als singles erschienenen songs des new yorker duos bob & gene. das von tollen vokal-harmonien dominierte sweet soul music-album, samt titelgebender marvin gaye/tammi terrell- coverversion von “if this world were mine”, war damals schnell vergriffen und ist seitdem ein gesuchtes sammlerstück. jetzt ist es wieder erhältlich, wieder auf vinyl, jedoch remastert und um zwei nicht auf der original-version erschienenen tracks erweitert. 1967 waren die beiden teenager bobby nunn und eugene coplin die stars des in buffalo, new york ansässigen und auf lokale gospel- und soul-acts spezialisierten labels mo do records. bobby nunn veröffentlichte später soloalben auch auf motown records und arbeitete mit rick james und philip bailey zusammen.
