“uncle tony’s coloring book” was originally released in 2007 and for years available exclusively on cd. since it s release, utcb gained a cult following, one that grew substantially after blockhead made the album available digitally in 2015. the demand increased for a proper vinyl release of the album and after 10 years it’s finally here.
young heavy souls has collaborated with blockhead to release “uncle tony’s coloring book” on a beautifully packaged double lp.

wie staubkörner, die im goldenen licht der sonne tanzen, ergänzen sich die musikalischen talente von mollono.bass und ava asante zu einem sinnbild für sommerliche lebensfreude: la vida colorida. die treibende dynamik des titels basiert auf den prinzipien von bassdruck und percussions, aber mehr noch auf melodischer eingängigkeit. schmissige klavierakkorde setzen die gradlinige rhythmik fort, dazwischen entfaltet sich mit darufgängerischer leichtigkeit der heitere klang einer viloline, und mit dem vocal gesellt sich ein unterschwelliger hauch von sonnigem reggae dazu. la vida colorida kommt in einer kunterbunten vielfalt von version und remixen: dole & kom verwandeln den track mit unerverschämter lässigkeit in verflüssigte house music, während mollono.bass eine jazzige dekonstruktion von tiefsinniger effizienz präsentiert. für jene momente ohne worte gibt es eine instrumental version, und für jene momente der sonnendurchfluteten euphorie einen hochsommerlichen mix von ava asante.

even though we re not paladins of pure concepts, the sound we re currently looking to release usually has a raw, kinda primitive and rough around the edges nature. we re definitely not looking for the generic -soul sample meets a 4x4 beat- kind of edit. for this release we challenge 4 of our favorite porto producers to give their unique twist to different samples and sounds of records we love. ranging from upbeat disco rhythms to organic drums and hypnotic g funk melodies this release has it all. we truly believe this is a honest representation of part of the porto music movement that makes us proud.

ynks third ep for tenderpark sends us straight to dub house heaven with the lush and chord driven deepness of paradigms lost. just as dreamy as its thrilling, the track perfectly illustrates ynks highly musical approach to house which he further underlines with colorit on the flip side: this fresh and funky piece of music is overflowing with philly soul rhodes pianos and vocals. so philly lover no. 1 drei farben house obviously just had to contribute a remix in which he carves out the classic harmonies of the original and adds an ultra funky disco groove. also,with this release our third artwork series draws to a close

italian club staple and producer kaiser turns to moc for his debris ep, showcasing three agile techno slices and a remix from exploration records chief johannes volk. “parachute” opens up the release in a spellbinding, energy-heavy manner, with its whirlwind groove and lead taking no prisoners. next up is “debris”, showing off an equally energetic prowess channeling zig zagging synths and a more melodic, yet still heavy strung bassline. “esplosione di colori”, translated as ‘color explosion’ aptly translates into sound what is usually only possible for a paint canvas. a lighthearted, arpegio-ridden track in original, johannes volk works his magic, turning it into a versatile piece of raw, dubby techno.

wonderful 70s work from tom ze! the record’s a bit more straightforward than some of his other records from the decade, and has a number of tracks with a samba sound at the base – but there’s more than enough fantastic material to keep the record fresh, and tom’s writing is as great as ever. there’s a vocal group that sings with ze on many of the tracks on the record – but they also seem to sometimes act as a greek chorus, in response to breakaway vocal passages that are dominated by ze. includes the excellent baroque funky number “dor e dor”, plus the tracks “sonho colorido de um pintor”, “a baba”, “o sandalo”, “a briga do edificio italia com o hilton hotel”, and “happy end”. pressing on 180 gram vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve.

repress - for their first multi-artist compilation, music from memory take us on a trip to the heart of the amazon rainforest. outro tempo: electronic and contemporary music from brazil, 1978-1992 is a double lp that explores the outer reaches of brazilian music, where indigenous rhythms mix with synthesizers and where mpb mingles with drum computers. as brazil faced the last years of its military dictatorship and transition to democracy, a generation of forward-thinking musicians developed an alternative vision of brazilian music and culture. they embraced traditionally shunned electronic production methods and infused their music with elements of ambient, jazz-fusion, and minimalism. at the same time they referenced the musical forms and spirituality of indigenous tribes from the amazon. the music they produced was a complex and mesmerising tapestry that vividly evoked brazilian landscapes and simultaneously reached out to the world beyond its borders.

this album is another chapter in the ongoing there s-muchmore-to-brazil than-bossa-nova saga. it s filled with disco-eratracks produced for the brazilian domestic marketplace, some of which were hits, others which were quite obscure. what binds them all together - besides their common origins, time period and overall musical approach - is the fact that their reputation has been steadily transcending brazils borders. this has allowed these tunes to find their place on set lists, want lists and in the crates of the world s most discerning djs and tastemakers.

whilst barlande may be difficlut to classify in genre it has been described as having its roots in flamenco and some ramifications of contemporary classical music. but any attempt to pigeon-hole this album should be ignored beyond deciding what shelf or floor to place it on in a record store. barlande is about creativity and discovery and its story is both fasciniating and inspiring a father, pedro soler, and his son, gaspar claus have created something entirely unique. the opening track insomnio mineral is a gentle begining with sparsely plucked cello before being joined by a gently sweeping flamenco guitar. what takes place from there on in is difficult to describe in words. the language between the cello and guitar become unlike anything i have heard before. the cello comes alive, a voice at times, leaping and striding in near freeform before coming back to join in mutual step and melodic interplay with guitar.
