heya. varvet strikes again. this time with no less than techno veteran ben pest. ben who just started his own label over worx and before that releasing tons of records on labels such as bonus round, don t, i love acid just to name a few. he also released under the name black e together with cristian vogel on vogels sleep dept imprint. bens ep is 4 tracks of complete and utterly funky techno madness that will be hitting any dancefloor or twisted mind right in the stomach. first limited press is on solid green vinyl since this is bens favourite colour.

great dont techno 4 tracker... new moves from cursor, ben pest & jerome hill ... cursor miner has built a solid reputation over the years for being a free thinker in the world of techno, breaks and bass music, and here for dont he delivers the massive >nonon<. with early support from perc, the track has to be heard to understand... it lures you into a trance then thunderous spastikesque drums pummel the listener into submission. in one word, classic. plus you get palinki, a warped techno bouncer. on the flip, another freethinker, ben pest treats us to >yam um sugli<, with deranged synths and drums practically oozing funk, this sounds like nothing else on the planet.. which is what dont is all about! finally, label boss jerome hill steps up to give a reworking to the aptly named >rumbler<, an intense techno bruiser!

finally panic bridge, the label run by ben pest (keyboard player with ninja tune artists pest), releases its second assault on the normal record-buying public. this time around ben and pals (some also from the band pest) bring another 4 tracks that pillage from the dank basements of garage, breaks & techno and empty the resulting goodies onto a carboot table of epic proportions

itÆs been a couple of years since victim last released a full 12, but just like the buses you wait that long and then two come along at once. for victim, the >off piste< 12 follows hot on the heels of their split 12 with jerome hill & dont recordings. in the case of ben pest, they are coming thick and fast at the moment, with a recent release on lukes angers bonus round label, and an upcoming 12 on the seriously deranged panic bridge label. so, all in all a busy few months. as for the tracks, they all share in common a seriously weighty bottom end, and a tendency for crunchy acidic midsàbut that is kinda where the similarities end, as ben takes the opportunity to explore various avenues off the main street of techno. from the stomping acid workout of >zeedonk< to the more electro-influenced beats of >pain n gain< this is a record that covers a fair few bases (basses?), although all with the aim of thrilling a crowd that enjoys their techno on the gnarly side.

bonus round is back, the glitterati fashionista ep by ben pest unloads 4 original genre bending tracks that contain elements of techno and p funk, all ready to cause ruin to the discotheque! jumpadelic is a heavy chicago influenced, gangster funk workout. the tune has been causing a stir as part of bens live set with a vocal hook that gets everyone jacking! theres a party inside my mouth is a hard and crunchy electro funk track with some wobbly synths that will warp minds. lukes anger checks in with a futuristic re work of now panic adding some spookiness to the twisted original. tiny beginnings rounds off the ep with a slower tempo and more funk laden grooves, lots of cheeky sounds keep the mind hooked while the ass follows...

next up on asking for trouble after selling out the album and re-pressing comes a four track remix ep for radioactive man’s luxury sky garden album. life-time friend of radioactive man and control tower partner dexorcist aka simon brown is first up to deliver his take on ‘sonic portal’ on the a side. his style has always been uncompromising and as a music lover and dj he s been a major influence on tenniswood’s style and taste for a long time. dexorcist turns in a detroit influenced banger which goes deep. ben pest then follows with his own take of the same track. a member of funk band pest, purveyor of wonky techno, music tech teacher and hardware enthusiast ben has also released on jerome hill’s don t’ label, i love acid and horror boogie to name a few. his take on ‘sonic portal’ is as genre bending and weighted as you’d expect. over on the b side pain struck stanley dumb remix ‘blast furnace’ - a fast and furious electro track which was released as a digital bonus to the album. they work it into a breakneck speed techno number. taste the amphetamine! completing the package biggabush (aka glyn bush) brings his dub influence to the mix. bush of rockers hi-fi connected with radioactive man during a mastering session asking to do the mix after hearing the record. the results are impressive and provide a welcome tempo and vibe change to the ep with its deep and dubby elements.
