desroi debuts on avian. shifted s avian label returns to fore with a heady, five track offering from german producer, desroi. in keeping with the label s finely tuned aesthetic concerns, the music draws from a reduced palette – keeping the colours muted & the tone driven and direct, focusing instead on drawing out pleasing textures & subtle rhythmic anomalies via intricate use of delay and reverb, to arrive at a sweet spot between dance-floor potency & the more cerebral posits of the techno genre. tethered at the base by cavernous low end, heady drum machine programming drives the work – often married with a single warping synth motif shifting about the sonic periphery, modulated carefully across the course of the recording s run time to create both moments of heads down introspection & outright hysteria. like much of the best work on the label, the music has a diy quality that belies its complexity, but at the same time lends to its undoubted effectiveness. desroi s ability to harness the full force of such a limited collection of elements is testament to the producer s skill as an artist within the genre, creating a powerful sense of cohesion on his avian debut.

reeko debuts on avian. in recent years, the spanish producer’s name has become synonymous with exquisitely produced, hyper-functional techno variants. releases via pole group and planet rhythm as well as the artist’s own mental disorder outlet have seen juan rico develop a distinctive sound that places elements of noise & ambient within a contemporary techno framework – harnessing a dense, abrasive energy without compromising groove. layers of ethereal pads, filtered noise and feedback fx are compounded into a tight, mono space, pushing back on powerful, propulsive low end – making for a decidedly heady listening experience.

litüus returns to avian.
sparse and reflective, the chicago native’s work occupies a curious space on the periphery of the techno genre. by stripping back the music to all but its most vital elements - most notably the sequence, but at the same time maintaining a sense of urgency in its articulation, litüus crafts exquisite, ghostly shadows of busier, more fleshed out material. neither intro nor outro, but rather suspended in some middling point of formation - what remains is a remarkably pure examination of minimalist, experimental synthesis.

alex tsiridis of cassegrain debuts on avian as rhyw. the extended ep, which represents the second outing for tsiridis under this moniker, sees the british producer pit a handful of elastic dance-floor workouts alongside a pair of more experimental, ambient reductions. despite careful processing rendering them decidedly monochrome, the dance-floor recordings maintain a curious colour and musicality. lead synth sequences drive much of the work, ducking in and out of the sonic backwater with considerable dynamism – almost hook-like in their execution, sharpened with ample distortion and melding with intricate drum work to create subtle shifts in tone and energy that propel the work forward. whilst reduced in it’s elements, like much of the best of the genre – the music sees those elements hard at work. tsiridis places atypical focus on groove, eschewing a more linear approach in favour of a kind of greyscale funk that finds its potency in the contrast between components. ‘iroquois’ and ‘aversion two’, the beatless compositions that appear on the ep isolate the ambient constituents of the work – with tonal nods to drone and noise musics whilst managing to hold on to the clandestine tunefulness that runs through the whole body of work.

since its inception, shifted s avian imprint has gone from being a murderous, straight-laced techno imprint to what has now become a source for some of the best and most multi-faceted industrial music from the european quarters. we re not sure of verge s true identity, it could either be one of the label s existing artists, the mysterious shifted himself, or even an artist like blawan riding incognito (don t quote us on that, though!) solitary and crest-fallen, this magnetic collection of tunes feed off one another with utter ease and simplicity. they re not merely a selection of sound experiments but rather a unitary cloud of sonics which leave the listener with a powerful mental image. the feeling of dusk, the water dropping off the leaves, the cold breeze of autumn. this is a blinding foray into the darkest corners of contemporary industrial experimentation.

new york native shawn o’sullivan returns to avian as 400ppm with debut lp, ‘fit for purpose’.
as an artist, o’sullivan has long since explored the juncture between hard-hitting, functional dance floor material and more lofty, conceptual work. from a purely structural standpoint, the artist’s return to avian bears all the hallmarks of previous output under the alias, utilising the same palette found on early ep’s for guy brewer’s label. stripped back and driven, the music marries caustic drum-machine polyrhythms with warping, pitch bent leads and characteristically atmospheric use of reverb. it’s a decidedly dance floor offering, but the music comes refracted through o’sullivan’s own lens, with plenty of elegant references to a career spent exploring much of the techno genre’s periphery, from noise to new wave. crushed vox bubble up from beneath wrought-iron percussion and the artist takes time to step away from high energy 4×4 workouts to explore more complex rhythmic structures and harsh, low tempo grooves.

jamie roberts is no stranger to the more experimental tenets of the techno genre, and much of the british artist’s output of late has hinted at more leftfield leanings. a recent return to will bankhead’s trilogy tapes imprint saw a brace of meditative, post-detroit workouts - employing the same heady, hardware aesthetic as much of his work on ternesc - though at a drastically reduced tempo. it’s this same willingness to break down perceptions regarding his own music that marks walk type – roberts’ debut on the avian label, as a notable chapter in the artist’s discography.

british producer pris preps his sophomore ep for avian. love, labour, loss marks the berlin-based producer’s second outing on guy brewer’s avian label, and a further refinement of a production aesthetic that pitches caustic, heads down tool techno & greyscale idm against more meditative ambient & drone recordings.

originally released via ascetic house in 2015, vereker’s grace tape owes much to the canon of vintage anti-music, exploring catharsis via a transgression of traditional compositional & technical values. working with the same thematic concerns of much of the more leftfield additions to the avian catalogue - in it’s more subdued moments, anxiety & dissafection, in it’s more high energy - pure hysteria - the recording pairs basic synthesis with warped vocals in the same manner as industrial progenitors throbbing gristle and steven stapleton (nurse with wound).
the reduced palette & crushed production aesthetic creates a powerful immediacy, with a twisted musicality being drawn - at times, kicking and screaming, out of the depths of the mix. like much of vereker’s best work on labels like lies & berceuse heroique, elements warp & twist uncomfortably within the tight confines of a reduced dynamic spectrum - creating a dark, heady energy. scetic house, the predominantly cassette only label, has seen appearances from la’s silent servant, northern electronics’ varg & avian’s own shifted - under his covered in sand alias.

pris offers a brace of monochromatic recordings - bookending a pair of brooding soundscapes with distressed, reductivist club fare. an impressive continuation from past work, that surfaced via his own resin imprint and stephen bishop’s opal tapes project, the record is bound tight by a powerful sense of unease & bonafide emotion - finding itself sitting neatly in amongst avian’s most successfully articulated releases. printed inner and outer sleeve. black vinyl.

shawn o’ sullivan marks return to shifteds avian imprint with a four track ep under his 400ppm alias. following on from 2013s non nocere, the new yorker pairs trademark stripped back drum programming with heady, warping drones and frenetic sequencing. even at full throttle, careful attention to detail lends the productions a degree of musicality oft missing from contemporary techno. subtle nods to idm feature, and references to o sullivans work with katie o sullivan as further reductions remain in the form of spacious verb and fluid atmospherics, but the focus is undeniably on the dance floor. printed inner and outer sleeve... black vinyl.

avian s first release since absorbing its sister label mira comes from chicago based musician connor camburn under the alias litüus, with an entirely beatless collection that well establishes avian as the home for the kind of searching electronic experimentation that would have been found on the ten-inch focused imprint that shifted recently announced would merge with its parent label. the ep follows previous cassette releases under the litüus name for brave mysteries, notice recordings and mazurka editions and comprised entirely of real time single-take recordings on hardware instrumentation. shorn of percussive elements yet not without their own rhythmic structures, camburn s six compositions are free of immediate electronic genre influences and instead draw primarily on non-musical inspiration in addition to various other contextual reference points, as he sought to express ideas of the unraveling or -de-composition- of musical or architectural spaces through musical forms imagined as inverted contours and negative spaces.

avian s 16th release is coming from alessandro cortini under the name skarn. best known for his work with trent reznor both in nine inch nails and how to destroy angels, the italian producer just recently made his debut on hospital productions with the hugely acclaimed * sonno* lp. his new project skarn sees cortini take a turn into more technoid driving soundscapes, which makes shifteds avian label the perfect fit for it. the ep features three tube driven noise workouts with a precise minimalism and a hypnotic drum pattern, which leads the way through the release.
