philippe cohen solal (of gotan project) celebrates the 50th anniversary of summer of love, covering one of its anthems “aquarius / let the sunshine in” of hair the musical which premiered on stage in october 1967. a complex but soothing modern reggae moombathon riddim carried by the ethereal harmonies of legendary jamaican reggae singer horace andy (massive attack, skylarking, ain’t no sunshine...) with a delivering coda sung by an empowering choir.

blaq numbers welcomes explorer of the humankind back to the stable with his latest work, -where did y’all go?-. combining lots of handmade drums & machines with hazy synths, he explored a new set of influences while writing and recording from 2018-2019. the four original compositions now find themselves on a brand new 12” backed by remixes from detroit’s byron the aquarius and larry houl. -where did y’all go?- expands on eoth s previously established house sound and brings in elements of bedroom pop, with lyrical content exploring the modern conundrum of maintaining relationships in the age of social media. not much is known about the lyon native, but his music has built him a keen worldwide following since his debut productions surfaced in 2017.

the latest release from the rome-based onda records truly is a delight for the senses. helmed by gianluca marcelli aka dj glc, the label kicked off in 2017 courtesy of the exceptional sounds of g.i.m productions’ ‘rising waves’ ep. although following the latter might have been something of a daunting task, onda’s sophomore release is equally enticing, with two originals (one from dj glc and the other from the aforementioned g.i.m productions) backed with stunning remix interpretations by two of the states’ most respected contemporary producers, atlanta’s byron the aquarius and detroit veteran javontte.

the aesthetics of this ep is related to the universe electro / idm early 90 s by a choice of very precise synthesizer. p6, sh- 101, tb-303, tr-808 and to coordinate the whole an rs7000 which comes to rhythm this refusal of modernity. foreign sequence digs into the techniques of the past to find the answers, he shows his know-how here and uses it to express a multitude of emotions between nostalgia and optimism.

soulquencies is a perfect harmony of deconstructed soundsystem music. beautifully rebuilt with ambient textures, it hints towards grime and steppers while all the time melodious, musical and underpinned with bass weight. it perfectly transcends from clean and heavenly harmonies to bass pressure and grit – icy to warm in a masterful way. this is the first full length album on scrub a dub and we couldn’t be prouder of this piece of music, which is equally at home on a hi-fi or a soundsystem. soulquencies is the brand new album from the artist aquarius, a classically trained musician from tokyo who cut his teeth in the music industry in glasgow in the early noughties. he hosted some of the city’s frst dubstep nights bringing artists like silkie and goth trad, and taking small basement sessions into the bigger clubs, supporting mala at the art school. he played at some of the frst outlook festival parties and was a trusted tour engineer for mungo’s hi fi soundsystem, before returning to tokyo where he distilled his experiences and musical vision into this project.

rising sun, dj fett burger (as fett birger) and tijana t grace the second remix package of spencer parker s different shapes and sizes series on work them records this february. following on from the first remix release, which featured dj deep, akirahawks and setaoc mass, part two will see more reinterpretations of spencer parker s 2017 series from an array of talented producers. rising sun has earnt a cult following for his otherworldly productions as well as curating labels such as kristofferson kristofferson, styrax and millions of moments and here we see the accomplished producer deliver two hypnotic and classic sounding variations of riff shapes. sex tags and freakout cult cofounder dj fett burger then provides an acid-laced mix of size:yes as dj fett birger. finally, respected belgrade techno dj tijana t closes the release with a robust and evolving rework of a different size

after a short hiatus to axe on wax and his return to tieffrequent records monosoul is coming back to s4aw, too... monosoul s signature sound is still there and yet has changed a bit. more bouncing basslines, more deepness and more synth textures... on remix credits we ve got atlanta s very own byron the aquarius. 2016 was an exceptionally good year for him in the biz with releases on wild oats, sound signature, etc. in 2017 he will totally go big with his unique, deep - no frills jazzy impro style. so we re more than happy with his own chord jams making up a top notch remix. what s left to be said well like michael brody put it: nothing is more important than friendship. not money, not fame, not death. crew love is true love!
