since efficient space excavated andy rantzens mind-bending will i dream? the rest of the world has become better acquainted with the darker & dubbier side of one of australias rave superstars. were excited to present a selection of tracks from andys incredibly diverse oeuvre, 6 songs that sit somewhere between 80s digital reggae, 90s rave and the horizon of our accelerating future. lifting the veil speeds up snappy drum programming and a thundering bassline to breakneck speeds, pitting them against sombre chords and strings, perfectly capturing the reflective headspace of a night drive through babylon. cosmic vibrations harks back to the development of fully computerised rhythms emanating from jammy and tubbys waterhouse studios, by way of erskineville. in the same vein, bedtime for boo boo sees andy joined on the boards by sydney dub technician sheriff lindo, creating a dynamic digi-dub number that is sure to come alive on any soundsystem worth its weight - a heady showcase for two of australia’s finest reggae talents. flip the disc to find move it, the most concentrated dose of the jungle vibes that permeate the ep. rantzen channels the headrush sonics, breakneck drums and euphoria of d n bs heydey, nailing the red-eyed early am atmosphere of a sydney warehouse ca. 95 - and its just as likely to cap off the night of many a secret inner west location to come. magic lantern marries a dreamy synthesizer melody with a wicked, subby bassline. if there was a dancehall scene in ferngully, this wouldve been the soundtrack, with enough low end to really rattle the treetops. on closer dub generator, a slightly-creepy mechanized voice urges you to “leave your worries at the door come and join your friends upon the floor - an introduction to the dancefloor or an induction into some sinister cult? whatever the message, the dub chords and massive bassline lull you into the headspace where these words take hold. all songs recorded at masking tapes, liquid blue and 1/66 enmore rd, 1997-2000.

12" Vinyl lp, 180gr UK20.03.18
spinning plates is back for another long overdue release, and this time it comes in the form of a split ep featuring returning artist andy rantzen and laccy with two tracks each. the vinyl only release comes with very special screen-printed silkscreen artwork and is pressed on meaty 180g vinyl for an extra warm and deep sound. andy rantzen is a sydney based artist who appeared on this label s superb second release. the 98% track from it was used by sonja moonear in her cocoon mix cd shared with carl craig, and andy is also well-known as part of the duo itch-e and scratch-e along with paul mac. he assumes that alias here for a remix of the dial. laccy aka pascal sturmer is a young but talented artist who regularly finds himself behind the decks at cult clubs like berlin s club de visionaire and the spaced parties in london. a friend of label a&r bruno schmidt, he just released on francesco del garda s label timeless, is a real underground head with a bottomless well of knowledge when it comes to cult sounds and scenes and is signed to the top crisalida agency.
home recorded above a lawyers office and next door to a brothel, the retrospective is lead by the earth shattering digi stepper rock steady. originally intended for an abandoned dub album, rock steady and fantasy dub were saved from the cutting room floor by australian cd-only compilations on creative vibes and vital collective clan analogue, while green river was never released. now demanding wider appreciation, the dubs finally find union with green man’s new york hip hop/dancehall style, lifted from his second solo album the blue hour vol. 3: deep blue. humbly excelling in all electronic forms, rantzen helped guide techno-rave duo itch-e & scratch-e through the 90s with paul mac. winning the inaugural best dance release category at the 1995 aria awards, mac thanked all of sydneys ecstasy dealers, without whom this award would not be possible, while rantzen stayed at home. the two would also operate incognito as boo boo & mace and screensaver, often collaborating on looney dubs with sheriff lindo - the master of seismic shocks down under. rantzens earliest work stretches back to pelican daughters, an ensemble who proliferated industrial-leaning ambient and tape loop experiments
the first spinning plates ep back in february was picked up by print media and radio tastemakers from ra and dj mag to b.traits and moxie, whilst djs as diverse as ivan smagghe and francois k slotted it into their dj bags. as such there has been much demand for a second release, and now it arrives in the form of a fascinating split ep from scene veteran andy rantzen and relative newcomer bruno schmidt, who helps a&r for the label. in fact it was bruno who came across andy’s tracks during a late night youtube session. andy, who remixed inxs and severed heads back in the day and is a sydney based producer who has been active for three decades, had upped a load of his old demos to youtube in the faint hope that one day someone might find them. and damn are we happy he did, because they are brilliant affairs that sound like little else. for his part, bruno has been a louche resident and hifi creator alongside andrew james gustav and gwenan and delivers an exceptional stripped down late night trip/early morning trip.

efficient space continues to expose australias esoteric musical history with oz waves - a collection of 80s diy recordings, compiled by odd wave anthropologist steele bonus. definitive proof that inhabitants of the down underground were links in a global network of creative kooks, oz waves connects those who utilised mobile recording rigs and small press releases to create and disseminate misfit synth-punk, tape loop experiments and inner city pop. through overseas mail order exchanges, anonymous groups like zerox dreamflesh could find place on belgian compilations, while chris and cosey lullabied their son to sleep with irena xero and her interdisciplinary art collective zip. bonus selects 10 survivors from the fertile period (1982-1989), most of which were only issued on cassette in tiny editions of 5 to 100 copies. m squared affiliates prod join the extraterrestrial software seduction, he dark ages minimal wave neglect and the irreverent cut ups of the horse hes sick and mk ultra & the assassins of light. the remaining tracks have been sourced from musicians private archives and are being officially released on oz waves for the first time - andy rantzens industrial dub itch-e & scratch-e precursor, the buoyant vocal-drone of ironing music and moral fibro, sydneys short lived answer to weekend and marine girls. with detailed track by track notes, lines are drawn to severed heads, scattered order and other
