last spotted tomfooling as tryck & ton with edvin edvinsson, and prior to that as tiedye on mike simonettis italians do it better imprint, subversive swede anton klint makes his debut on simonettis latest label 2mr with two more vitally trippy, heavily dub-informed originals. ‘mun chugs at a stately 107. rippling in places, squiggling in others, theres an unabashed fx weirdness bubbling and popping over the insistent shimmering dubwise groove. tweaking, freaking but running at such a smooth temper theres space between the chaos, anton is balancing some heavily hypnotic alchemy here. ‘strupe takes things even lower and slower. a dusty bluesy chugger, unhurried-yet-relentlessly building with a great sense of cosmic drama, listen and marvel as more elements are precision introduced throughout the seven minute trip. a masterclass in modern day honkytonk. remix-wise were thrusted into the later hours with a technoid twist from andre laos. maintaining antons originals trippy charm and measured pace but re-amping it with grittier foundation, teasing risers and an insurgent synth strike, its the perfect complement to one of 2mrs most singular releases to date. open wide.

from the very first track, its clear that abby echiverris debut, the ab initio ep is something different and rare: a polished and fresh interpretation of electronic music that incorporates classic electro squelches with intricate broken beats and expansive synthesizer zone-outs.

marcel vogels latest on lumberjacks in hell welcomes the mighty leftfield nyc mc sensational to flow over his learned disco house grooves. sensational sounds right at home on if you like, and vogel gives him a slightly freaked groove to riff on that works just fine. brown curls taps up khalil anthony, one of the finest uk house vocalists in operation right now, and patchworks remixes it into a dreamy disco funk jam for the boogie brothers and sisters to shake it to. alma negra gets busy with if you like, creating a tumbling afro-centric re-rub par excellence, and then tim jules comes on board with an instrumental version that nudges into tightly wound funk territory.

after shifting through a few different monikers the last year deepblak rhythm czar afrikan sciences returns to form. laced always with his elastic funk forward grooves the reciprocity ep continues to build on his legacy. one that has consistently morphed diasporic rhythms into new colors. creating new space on the dance-floor as well inside the mind. four independent yet intertwined tracks all meant to make you oscillate inward outward.

the penultimate release on optimo trax (at least for now) comes from tel aviv’s mighty kalbata. i was already a big fan and was so delighted when he got in touch to see if i would be interested in releasing something by him. unusually for optimo trax this is one track in 3 versions but each version is so different that often i play them all in one dj set. originally there were two versions but as kalbata is a renowned master of dub (check out the documentary online about him recording in jamaica), i gently persuaded him to do a no-holds-barred dub mix too which appears here as enkuan pt 3. a few words about the record from kalbata – i went to ethiopia in the beginning of 2017 to record musicians. the most memorable one was mulugeta teshome who plays the washint flute on this record. it’s a traditional ethiopian flute made out of wood, and mulugeta came to the studio carrying a whole bag of them, each one in a different key. we chose the scale and started the recording session. i ended up taking the tracks a lot further with the three cuts on the record but really it all started that day, in a small studio shack in addis ababa.

tarawangsawelas are a musical duo from bandung, mainly performing a contemporary version of tarawangsa, the sacred music from sundanese west java. here they are joined by their teacher and maestro, pak pupung supena, together with, pak jaja, on sekalipon. wanci is a minimalist, cosmic album composed with a careful modern interpretation of one of the most mystical and spiritual genres in indonesia. a gorgeous and infectious six track album. tip!

profan (...remember wolfgang voigts abstract techno label from the 1990s) is back from the future, and again complicates the situation. like his earlier projects, the brand new sog (strictly limited to 400 copies) release combines seemingly familiar and extremely unfamiliar signs, and in the most unusual way bends them around the utterly familiar bass drum. the result is a conspiracy of four sound frescos of peculiar beauty, and indeed they deserve the title abweichung (engl. deviance) - named after voigts painting featured on the cover. this is minimal art techno that raises questions.
profan 32 will be released before profan 31which will be released a bit later. yet both are heralds of the art publication/double cd compilation: wolfang voigt – werkschau to be released in spring 2010.
