we reckon it s time for a full junktion ep on outplay! you can say wide awake is an appropriate title after a wonderful 2015 with a string of ep s on sleazy beats, razor-n-tape and rose records. this four tracker explores the sound he s been developing over the years and even touches a newer side. the ep opens with the title track wide awake and embodies the signature junktion sound with a summery balearic touch. what we are is a faster synth laden affair coupled with his usual sample action. sunny side up is what the title says it is, a sunny disco track driven by a groovy bassline and a funky rhythm guitar. the ep closes down with don t mess up for a more contemplative jazzy track with some smooth sampling and afro touches.

yet again the leafs are turning neon golden, reminding us of the change of seasons lying at the edge of our doorstep. the first cold breezes and the fading warmth of the sun, which we just took for granted so easily, sketch the outline of that mild and soothing melancholia resting in autumn s palms. a mood we can very well enjoy to bury in deeply and with luise s newest release listen to closely. -mentis excessus- is a tenderly crafted tale, a musical journey that paints broad images of false memories and blurry resemblances. like a déjà-vu that lasts too long to put aside, it crawls up your neck to give you that eerie feeling of curiosity with which you look at the uncanny world that suddenly surrounds you. we are very pleased to welcome -wide awake- as the most recent addition to luises s sheltered, little family, a project that has its foundations at the talented hands and hearts of -niju-, -ninze- & -okaxy-. these three banded together for greater good to provide nothing less, but their as well as laut & luise s first album. not restless, no insomnia, just wide awake.

this latest instalment in an impressive run of eps sees chris colburn drop one more classic sounding cuts, wide awake (jacking, detroit-inspired minimalism). having asked to remix >wide awake< after receiving the track directly from chris, rebekah showed just how much she liked the track by delivering two remixes. her fully awake remix is typical of the no-nonsense heads-down style that has earned rebekahs previous work plaudits from adam beyer and chris leibing, while the half asleep mix reworks the original stab pattern to deep hypnotic effect.

swayzak returns with gestures of a sycophant. after a back catalogue of severely epic proportions (the seminal album snowboarding in argentina for example), a legendary fabric residency & mix cd, and a relationship with tresor that spawned epic gigs and an lp, not to have released a record since 2012 is nothing short of criminal. 2017 then sees beatnik boulevard deliver two long overdue tracks of those big room stylings that has become synonymous with the name swayzak . even as you succumb to the bass pressure, the oceans of detail and programming flourishes that only come with decades spent in those worldwide techno bunkers bring to mind the pedigree of this release. it was once declared that swayzak is a techno dinosaur - looking back that seems a justified moniker to go with the guttural, brobdingnagian sounds of these compositions. slow moving though the spawning may have been, the monster has once again awakened.

veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project’s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980’s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7” cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.

better known as kemback, geoff wright is a bristol based producer, selector, composer, violinist, teacher, and waiter whose music is rooted in house and techno but often treads into the weird and wonderful worlds of jazz, soul, folk, and blues. while his gritty drums and shuffling grooves bear the hallmark of the city he now calls home, the melodic sensibility of his emotive strings and distant glimmering synths harks back to the tree-lined footpaths of the tiny scottish village from which he takes his name. his debut release in 2014, on bristol mainstay futureboogie, received widespread support from djs as diverse as skream, mosca, and nemone. more recently his effort as part of alfresco disco s acclaimed maximum joy series, titled awaken , has been likened to the music of artists including floating points and leon vynehall. good night & for you today, the two tracks on kemback s omena debut, showcase a high level of production skill. to complete the package the always excellent auntie flo (aka brian d souza) & omena label boss tooli take turns in remixing good night.

lascelles perkins was one of the first stars of the jamaican music scene. studio one’s leading balladeer and one of the most underrated singers from that time. lascelles perkins sang sentimental ballads and he scored massive local hits for coxsone dodd’s studio one label. songs like “lonely moments” and “together forever” other big hits followed “the mighty organ” song as a duet with hortense ellis, alton ellis’ sister, “destiny” and a whole catalogue of standards or foreign songs as they were called. lascelles could sing any song, make it seem effortless and at the same time address it in his own unique style.

for i was wide awake, it was no dream. a tree with spreading branches and with leaves of divers kinds, dead silver and live gold, shimmering in radiance that no words may tell.
