chris schwarzwalder strikes again for denature records, this time with a 5 tracks ep: catjammer. the track of the same name as well as -slow down- produced with feathered sun lead singer jo.ke have this unique slow and melancholic groove. on the other side setup and the list will take you to darker and hypnotic places. the ep ends with leaves which sounds like an invitation to an endless ballad into the sunset.

closely following the release of the last borderland single, the focus returns on transport, the last collaborative album by juan atkins and moritz von oswald. long time friend and studio partner of moritz von oswald, carl craig provides a new take on “transport”. extending and stripping the original sequence to its bone, the illustrious planet e president and illustrious detroit proponent also summons a stepping drum sequence and a swaying array of moving delays. this 12“ edit is cut on the a-side. the full version of carl craig’s remix clocks just above 20 minutes and is available digitally. both are available to anyone who purchases the record, through the enclosed download card. on the flip, dj deep & roman poncet rework carl craig’s remix, adding their signature grooves and myriad of tough drums, to full effect.

a kind of intimate scrapbook of the startling collaboration between the techno maestro and this long-standing musical collective based in bishkek, devoted to the roots music of kyrgyzstan. loose-leaved but balanced, lucid and intimate, it sets out from stunning a cappella and virtuosic komuz and kylak, mouth harp and traditional percussion: not field, but expert studio recordings, using marvellous vintage microphones, made over several days in berlin. further, a few of these are deftly treated by moritz, using reichian de-synced double-tracking, and discreet effects. also two ten-minute dubs: a deadly, signature berlin steppers, plus its version and an echoing, mystical drum session, recorded live on stage in bishkek. and a side-long, dream-like summation: the locomotive, oceanic, clangorous, dread facets. ravishing, rooted, searching music, beautifully presented.

lange hat uns der wiener elektronikmusiker klaus waldeck – zuletzt bekannt durch sein legendäres album »ballroom stories« (2007) – warten lassen. die vorfreude ist groß und waldeck hat auch gleich eine Überraschung für uns parat: sämtliche titel wurden auf italienisch eingesungen - und zwar von der fantastischen neuentdeckung, der wiener sängerin heidi moussa-benammar (»la heidi«).
waldeck selbst möchte gran paradiso als eine »spaghetti & western« produktion bezeichnet wissen: »gran paradiso, das ist einerseits hommage an den legendären sound des italo-westerns – andererseits spürt es auch den sentimentalen klängen des italienischen canzone nach - jedoch stets mit der nötigen ironischen distanz.« »italienisch... schon die sprache klingt nach musik«
der sound des albums trägt waldecks unverkennbare handschrift. gelegentliche einsprengsel von tango, dub und reggae runden dieses abwechslungsreiche sommeralbum ab.
alles in allem: ein entspanntes sommerliches album, das man auch gerne im herbst und winter hört, um sich daran zu erwärmen.

if you‘re familiar with cvbox‘ music you know that he isn’t the guy for your average techno track. formalistic song structures aren’t his thing. when you’ll start to listen to a new cvbox track you’ll don’t know how it will end. his music derives from his deep love for analogue gear and a pretty unique way to deal with it.
on his first album “so ist es im nadelwald” cvbox rides between the corner points of techno, electro and ambient. the music is infused by an omnipresent darkness that isn’t just there as an end in itself but will definitely give the thrills to listener and dancers.

so kam die postmoderne über uns und machte aus vormals ehrbaren kulturschaffenden werksarbeiter, denen alle schrauben abhanden gekommen schienen, im besten fall. mit minimaler eigenleistung (nimmt man die unbeabsichtigten fehler in der produktion mal aus), aber bei maximaler entgleisung entstand ein gänzlich neuer berufszweig. der grundsolide werksarbeiter, mit gema anmeldung im griff und guten draht zu seinem steuerberater. um die quietschfidelen arpeggio terroristen soll es heute mal nicht gehen. unsere protagonisten dieser geschichte sind andere. wahnwitzige, soziophobiker, menschen mit gebrochenen lebensläufen statt joghurt im rucksack, emsig agierende mitstreiter mit tupperdose in der tasche für die frühstückspause, willens den kampf der letzten kulturoffensive zu ende zu bringen, samplen, pitchen, alles zerhacken und zu undefinierbaren fetzen von funk wieder zusammensetzen. ausgeglichen vom duft der natur ankommend den fortschritt definieren wollen und den strom in die maschinen juckeln. Ästheten der fehler waren geboren. losgelöst vom fließband. hart & tief wird geackert geschwitzt, gebimmelt, der filter aufgedreht, der schmutz schaufelweise rangekarrt, bis die stufe der erlösung erreicht wird oder eben halt auch nicht. das leben ist nun mal kein einziger orgasmus und der funk entsteht in den pausen wie die befriedigung der gier und der besitz des moments, weil das leben ist doch nur ein wimpernschlag und wir immer nur einen abgrund entfernt von weltekel oder erlösung.

juan atkins and moritz von oswald – the two indispensable protagonists of the electric garden – plug back into the wilderness. ‘transport’ – the new full length effort of the borderland collaborative project – brings together a new set of studio-refined sequences aimed at colonizing some of the dark energy that pulsates through those areas that are thoroughly electrified, even if not ‘on the grid’. ‘riod’ is the first streak to bolt through. the detroit-berlin axis triangulates to a third point which, like the atomic particle that lives in two places at once, flickers between a form of techno-charged ambience and a futuristic club-jazz which cannot be broken down into constitutive parts. borderland remains caught in a state of enraptured stillness, invisibly moving between every imagined future for electronic sound making. the result: a font from which springs serene and exhilarating musical ideas that vibrate with refined energy for sixty seconds in every minute.

nonkeen is a project led by nils frahm (erased tapes) alongside sebastian singwald and frederic gmeiner. nils frahm and gmeiner attended the same school in hamburg. a mutual interest in sound recording brought them together and they began producing their own radio show which featured sounds from school, the voices of their teachers and recordings of their own instruments, all recorded on tape machines for kids. the double vinyl release includes a download code.

anouka started a year ago with her first sets on soundcloud and the response was incredible, building her fan base consistently. her debut ep traveller is released on soso, the label that she runs together with zusammenklang and oliver schories. the ep reflects what anouka always tries to express in her sets: showing that melancholy and happiness are very close together and they can work harmoniously. she recorded the vocals for both tracks by herself, which was challenging yet very rewarding. frequent traveller kicks things off nicely with its melancholic moodiness shining through as we meander effortlessly through berlin inspired melodies, while the sultry vocal sits wonderfully on top adding an extra layer of depth. christopher schwarzwalder is on remix duties, and from the off creates tension as this atmospheric rework subtly growls as it grooves. its sparseness is the key here, as this restrained gem works its magic. liberty is next as it tinkles away, creating a warm glow, and its caressed with its spoken french vocal, creating an air of sophistication. and rounding things off nicely is the midas 104 remix. this mystical touch up takes the energy levels up a notch, but increases the melancholy further and adding an air of just the right amount of wonkiness and quirkiness.

maybe one of the bigger open air releases this year. slow motion minimal pop house at its best. having started to spin hip-hop records in his hometown frankfurt / main he finally ended up in berlin. his >mirrors< ep on katermukke and >akumal< on laut & luise, where released to wide acclaim and already show his versatility and finesse. his remixes and co-productions for instance with nu and acid pauli does confirm his musical pedigree and make us eagerly await all the marvelous things yet to come from this fledging artist.
