villa Åbo in the alternative solo project of swedish musician and producer jan svensson, who has been making electronic music for the better part of 30 years as the artist behind such aliases as frak, studio ss and alvars orkestra. svensson also runs legendary swedish dance and experimental music label börft, the product of a mutual appreciation for severed heads and terse tapes. as villa Åbo he released two records in 1997 on börft and remained inactive for 17 years until the dutch label bio rhythm coaxed him into revisiting the project and released a double 12&#8243,, in 2014. jan has since followed with a steady stream of 12” singles for kontra-musik, noise in my head and radio lundberg.
“magnetic moves” is villa Åbo’s debut album, originally released in an limited edition of 65 hand-numbered cassettes by funeral fog in 2016.
clocking in at over 46 minutes, this first-ever vinyl edition spreads the 8 ragged techno tracks across four sides for maximum loudness. some songs are aggressively potent, with cyclical synth riffs and razor-sharp acid lines riding a heavy, funk-fuelled techno groove. others tracks are more fluid, vintage underground resistance or derrick may with killer drum machine workouts that come in handy as dj tools. all songs have been remastered by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a photograph of jan’s mother’s house, the meaning behind “villa Åbo”. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpre-tation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound ob-jects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listen-ers to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark.

elcome to smallville, rhythm of paradise. we are big fans of michele lamacchias music since he released paradise on his debut 12 as rhythm of paradise on cosmic rhythm. this track breathens out everything we love about house music- deepest rhythms and dope production, timeless sounds - and the mighty loon. whenever we played this track since it came to light, this was a highlight of the night. we approached michele to send some love for his music and he send over this ep- 3 tracks plus a shimmering remix from his buddy nicola loporchio aka cosmic garden, who is running the cosmic rhythm label. we are delighted to present these as smallville 53, comes with a full cover art by the one and only stefan marx.

carmen villain & jenny hval’s borders has gotten wonderful remix treatment from our favorite klare lewis. also biopshere has done a rare remix of red desert. both remixes are out now on limited edition 12” (only 300 made, and no repress).

ricardo villalobos remixes deardrum from alejandro mosso s album isolation diaries recently released on third ear. villalobos worked up a 40 minute jam from which this is a 9 minute section which moves from a gentle pattering of sounds into a full-on villalobos groove, taught and slinky at the same time, i.e. irresistibly funky. the jam then subsides into chattering noises before the groove begins again. burnt friedman s remix of isolation diaries is a slow burning super funky jam with classic burnt friedman dub elements laced through the track together with the melody twisted and phased. the closing track from the album, mounivers, completes this fine release.

2016 has been a good year for re-editor evil smarty and here pops up on tonbe s disco fruit imprint for the first time on vinyl. this is is a low-slung disco shuffler turned into a toughened-up house roller. if it feels good sees him in a celebratory mood (think sing-along disco funk with swinging new locked-in drums). feel the fire is a superb re-cut of the osmonds i,i,i that benefits greatly from some fresh new acid lines and the get down, a killer, 98 bpm funk revision that makes great use of the source material s urgent, impassioned vocal, bluesy guitars and wild synthesizers

berlin based mannequin records pushes out some proper industrial/ebm bangers. raised in pescara on the adriatic coast and ow based in frankfurt am main antonio barbetta is debuting on death of the machines as raw ambassador. the heavy four track ep is created to burn every dancefloor with full industrial vibes and a lot of ebm influences, giving us a small insight into his violent and rough sound. antonio is also running the smashing tape record label, with releases from violet poison, innsyter, dj loser and delivery. tip!!!

due to thyphoon dujuan, move d and his friends benoit bouquin aka initials b.b. & marco wollenberg were trapped in the studio for a few days, when david visited taipei in 2015 to play corner club. all the flights to and from the island were cancelled during the storm, so the three had some extended studio- and red-wine sessions. looking back from now- these were all worth it and the best thing that could happen- 3 hazy and timeless cuts from the eye of dujuan. as always it comes with a stunning full-cover artwork from stefan marx.

superb album by east los angeles band the village callers, recorded live in 1968 and released on eddie daviss rampart records. seasoned and popular band at all the top venues, the village callers brought many different sounds into the mix: jazz, soul, r&b and lots of latin percussion. their only lp consisted mainly of groove-filled covers such as i heard it through the grapevine, i dont need no doctor, joao donatos the frog and a medley of aretha franklin hits. hector, one of the standout cuts on the lp and its only original song, has been sampled by beastie boys, cypress hill or de la soul among other hip-hop artists.

first solo release for talented newcomer pepe villalba, who previously made his debut on panea records. he delivers four eclectic tracks spanning from breakbeat to acid house, crossing downtempo atmospheres that slightly touch deep house. standing out release!

(ror remixes i - amel-ep716). nonplace label boss friedman, as well, has carved out a unique space for himself within the electronic world, logging several decades’ worth of releases that with dub-wise production sensibility, skewed humor, and riots of tone color. though each individual remix has its own character, they are all united in their ability to provide a quick cure for fatigue with the common “loop”: though not improvised, they are strung together from fleeting phrases that evolve as if they are taking on a life independent of their creators. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpretation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound objects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listeners to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark. this is complemented nicely by villalobos’ remix of “microcosmoism”. it carries the energy level of the 1st ep over to a new disk, while heavily experimenting with feelings of emotional ambiguity. at some points aggressive and at other points merely curious, this mischievous collage of attitudes feels as inspired by the questing jazz of sun ra as it is by continental techno. contemplative keyboard runs, enthusiastic spring-like percussion and malfunctioning machine chatter all coalesce to make this a most fascinating piece of multi-purpose electronic music.

producer and dj from cantabria pablo bolívar signs the new release in his very own seven villas, in which he takes the chance to interpret --remixwise-- the tracks on the album traverse -by sensual physics which was originally released in 7v in 2016.

we are facing a very special project for pablo bolívar this time. his admiration for the veteran german producer joerg schuster -one of pablo s musical heroes- gets highly reflected in each one of the eight revisions which form this traverse (reprise) . what pablo exactly does is to respect the original escapist, dubby and ambient spirit of the original trip proposed by traverse , by means of adding a soft, deep and sophisticated club aura. he turn that the album sensual physics takes into the most characteristic bolívar style is tasteful and subtle, therefore it seems a sequel of the original one. no crashes, no harshness. here everything flows simply in a natural way, especially that ambient-deep and tech fog which just adds a punch in any case. tunes as mondragon , málaga or miracle -among others- acquire a new dimension when touched by pablo bolívar s hands: always looking to their origin with respect to the original producer and the delicacy of a revised piece of work.

a1 is a deeply psychotic acid death march into confusion, so minimal and primitive (kick, snare, acidsquelch) it will challenge every beard and armpit and might even hypnotize the dj to the point he cannot mix in the next one. a2 is a straight up commodore 64 sid track with mongoloid data elephants tooting over a wobbly and tarded electroish beat. b1 is a dystopic dreamy rave stomper, starting out kinda datacuddly but gets more and more serious, with choirs of fable mooers taking you into that virtual bad trip you need. b2 continues as expected with more c64 sid madness, so snary i cant even determine if its in 115 or 230bpm.
