here is lights out, a four-track ep by viers, a.k.a. lk, proprietor of hokkaido dance club and purveyor of surgically-precise, brutal techno, riotous electro, jacked house.

after a more than well-received first release, interstate records is back with a shimmering and diverse ep. featuring two original cuts by the label heads dial tone on the a-side, plus two outstanding remixes on the flipside, the record serves as a fitting successor to the label’s thriving start.

viers clocks back in on figure duty, showing up with up for another strong statement of his unmistakenly singular style. here he is working it from all angles: straight up and searingly stoic techno opener let my mind breath is grinding away grittily, while things turn surprisingly bouncy, as genesis dishes out electrifying boom-bap-breakbeats, transporting imagery of neo-futuristic tokyo streets. as night sets in, so does the kinetic groove of oyasumi, which twirls layers of energetic movement into a thick current, zooming through the citys deep gorges of concrete and fiber glass. closing track data entry 4590 finally provides some soothing ambient tones of melancholic longing, inviting to slowly drift away into white-washed nothingness and process the bright color storm that viers lets unfold on this intense record.

dystopian dreams are often used by our minds to try out new, scary scenarios. they are the perfect playgrounds because they combine elements of our real world with speculative elements that do not exist in real life. viers gets to work on his own visions of dystopia, with this menacing 12” tripped with hidden spooks and monster pummel lines.

a year after his extremely versatile debut ep for figure, viers comes out with another batch of tunes that again set him apart from his peers both in production value and creativeness. touching on the tropes of classic detroit techno, saxton presents a beautifully delicate opening track, rife with life from within the machines while still steadily thumping ahead. it’s the mix of this vital momentum together with a certain restraint, allowing each element to breath. so much that even the slightest adjuments cause maximum effectmetro, as felt on suitably titled stomper nothing changed where everything hits in exactly the right place. same goes for the incessant dialogue of tones on zehn, which sigha expands into a pensive piece, layering soothing washes of synths. not only an exceptional ep in its own right, figure 85 further cements viers as a skilled craftsman with seemingly endless imagination.

christian viers is fast becoming a prominent name on uk underground house and techno circuits, either as part of lazlo dancehall alongside leon vynehall or his long running a1 bassline project. techno-focused releases on his own label, source unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed fina white resulting in the bad timing ep, which the label state is a strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction they plan to take moving forward. title track bad timing is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. without time is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst uk house veteran nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

jorge ciccioli is not a newbie anymore. he remixed kleinschmager audios >audio3< for rrygular, last year. and consistently in early 2011 he delivers his first techno-stomper. although with full focus on the dancefloor, >jawa< doesnt need any stereotype offbeat emphasis but throws around percussins in semiquavers. on the flip side there is no time for you to relax! the hypnotic winter solstice remix by tim xavier really knocks your socks off!

steve laviers motivators collective return with their second release on the excellent here and now recordings! following on from the success of the first 12 (which included jobu being licensed to the legendary jazz bizniz compilation series and a remix by reverso 68) these new tracks continue in the vein of raw, live, polyrhythmic grooves. on the a-side, boosters on is a driving energy-packed track with the former manu dibango rhythm section of noel ekwabi and conti bilong being impressively complemented by yam whos des morgan on congas and bongos. keys are provided by afrika mhkinse (who played with the late great miriam makeba) and faze actions multi-talented rob lee. trombone is laid down by tony trombony hayden who has played with numerous acts including quantic soul orchestra. last but by no means least, vocals come courtesy of hannah khemoh who has most recently been touring as backing vocalist for the incomparable grace jones! on the flip, r2 is a laid-back improvised afro-jazz session, with the musicians laying down some serious feel-good sounds. all this produced by rob lee in the faze action studio.
