black truffle is honored to present the first ever reissue of whirled music by max eastley, steve beresford, paul burwell and david toop, one of the key documents of the inventive and energetic scene around the london musicians collective in the late 1970s and early 1980s. originally released on toop’s own quartz label in 1980, the lp features a remarkable series of performances made entirely with whirled and swung instruments and objects. part of the second generations of british free improvising musicians, the prolific scene centered around the performers heard here chafed at the limitations present within the music and ideology of improvising legends such as derek bailey, evan parker, tony oxley and john stevens. where the first generations of british free improvisers often demonstrated a rigorous commitment to non-idiomatic free improvisation and instrumental virtuosity, musicians like beresford reconnected with the dada antics of figures like han bennink and surrendered to joyful musical promiscuity, gleefully disrupting expectations around ‘serious’ improvised music through quotations (of anything from betthoven to reggae) and deliberate amateurism.

taylor freels has built quite a strong catalog over the years. his work under his urulu moniker, is widely regarded as top quality deep house and the banshee ep continues in this fashion. the title track has a dreamlike atmosphere to it. the banshee is a work that will strike a chord with lovers of the ocean-influenced sounds and hazy atmospheres. a strong presence of strings and dubby sounds, create a certain laidback mood that is perfect for sun drenched days in the park. chicagoan producer garrett david builds on the hazy atmospheres of the original, while adding some melodic elements to his remix of the banshee where he cleverly shifts between scales and different moods.
quadrant beat is a warm track that is built around warm chords and fashionable drum sounds. again, urulu makes sure to weave some outgoing dub elements into this b-side opening track. romance track is most likely one of the berlin based producer’s most melodic works to date. beautifully executed piano hits flow together seemingly easy over a sturdy rhythm that serves as the track’s backbone. the banshee ep is a work of lush deep house and an excellent addition to both urulu’s repertoire and the saft label catalog.

beauty and the beast is the latest in the series of special limited edition david bowie 7- picture discs being released and will be out on 5th january 2018, almost 40 years to the day of its original release on 6th january 1978. beauty and the beast was the second single taken from the album heroes, the second of the berlin trilogy albums recorded with tony visconti and brian eno at the legendary hansa studios in berlin. the track also features robert fripp of king crimson on lead guitar, who claims that his guitar was all recorded in his first take. the a-side of the 7- picture disc features the track with newly remastered audio, mixed by long-time bowie collaborator tony visconti. the aa-side is a previously unreleased live version of blackout, recorded live at deutschlandhalle, berlin on 16th may 1978 during the isolar ii tour.

ltd 2017 repress - as well as steering stripped & chewed, garrett david has been holding down a residency at chicago s smart bar for some time. on a roll following an appearance on distant hawaii, the time finds the producer in fine fettle with a classic approach to deep house clearly born out of the city he calls home. -the time- is a shimmying jam powered by crafty dub processing and a steady hand on the arrangement, while -sea shell- is a more passionate affair that swoons through key changes. the night sea journey remix of -the time- is a more brooding affair punctuated by synth accents for a deeper end result.

elegant divide are peter oldroyd and samantha gare, based in london uk. formed in 2014 elegant divide combines the talents of classically trained vocalist samantha gare and electronic pop music pioneer peter oldroyd. peter is a well-known mix engineer and record producer, and best known for his 1980 s experimental synth pop band camera obscura. samantha, trained at the italia conti academy of theatre arts, has experienced chart success before and lends her distinctive voice to the project. elegant divide expresses the dichotomy of dark and light in electronic music with songs that explore lyrically the emotions of urban living. with the use of vintage synthesisers (moog prodidy / source, novation bass station, nord lead 2, paia fatman, polyfusion modular, yamaha dx7) and drum machines (roland tr-909 / tr-808 / tr-707 / tr-505, yamaha rx17) their sound is rich and analogue, and samantha s cool vocal delivery creates a mood that is simultaneously accessible pop and dark and haunting.
