veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project’s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980’s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7” cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.

griffé is back and starts 2024 on a high note with five ten, lausanne based producer & dj, co-founder of flight mode. his surveillance ep highlights his love for acid, breaks & electro while delivering a gloomy and anguish atmosphere. four powerful tracks for the darker hours of the night.

over the past year things became a little quiet around the cologne based record label ki records but the collective have finally made its return with a new double 12”. marking his debut on ki, sieren unveils his first 10-track lp “transients of light”.

good things come to those who wait. the long-anticipated land of light debut, a masterpiece of an album and pillar of the esp institute, was unveiled in late 2012, slowly followed by the gorgeous remixed ii. since then, many have longed for the missing first half of this two-part package, the universe is kind and has finally delivered remixed i. on side a, kuniyuki takahashi (mastering engineer behind seminal esp releases, and legend in his own right) took the bull by the horns remixing flares—a piece of music so entrenched in melancholy, with such fluid performance and production, its hard to imagine anyone taking it deeper—he has unarguably triumphed. on side b, esp institute veterans tambien rose to the same challenge with flares, the bavarians taking a refreshing uptempo approach, a contrast to the swells of guitar and synth. closing the release is the seahawks blissful re-imagination of bell rock outpost, slowly and steadily setting sail into a dusky vision of the scottish lighthouse after which the song was named.

here we have a timely re-release of this much overlooked, later period oliver ho title – this eight track doublepack comes in with a full picture sleeve at a superb price and has a fantastic mixture of styles that reminds of christian morgenstern at his *miscellaneous+ best whilst easily demonstrating its uk techno pedigree.

besides launching his fresh bodybuilder quartet series (qsb), inaugurated by scott franka, nachtbraker unveils yet another quartet: four records in the the trophy quartet series (qst). both these two quartets will be released over the course of the next two years. the trophy series will cover the warmer side of the house music spectrum. and who better than parisian boy-wonder tell (banoffee pies, skylax, rutilance) to kick off proceedings with the brilliant faster than light ep. last year he released hope springs eternal on qs003 which was an overnight succes after getting rinsed by heavyweights like jeremy underground and dam swindle, so a proper solo ep was inevitable. on the a1 tell serves up some intergalactic french filter house dubbed faster than light which brings back the daft punk and armand van helden vibes of our walkman-days. we all just love filters, admit it. its true. next up is yall feel that honey (paradise mix), a tune with undeniable swing and moody chords that ultimately collide beautifully with a delectable big room piano riff that will stay in your head for days. b1 opens with a leisurely-paced jam called “what can u do for me”. it’s the ‘pretty one’ of the ep, the one girls fall in love with and boys hate to love because they know he’s hot stuff. a high pitched vocal, asking what you can do for her, flies over rubbery rhodes chords with neat percussion keeping you on the groove. the ep closes with b2 vamos a la playa. keywords: coconuts, sand, bikini, six-pack and tan. vamos! large and in charge.

farron continues the course of shaw cuts with his legend of the bat ep, following in the footsteps of chu liu hsiang: the journey to bat island. the voyage begins with c.i.t.g, its relentless break-beat fundament combined with coarse synth lunacy to wipe out the first dark shapes moonlit slaughter. joining forces with rivals, chu liu hsiang is no longer alone as he advances on bat island. semi-final thoughts accompanies the newly-formed crew to the mysterious ground a melody of warm synth and light churned by industrious oldschool drums. but who to trust? the fleeting harmony ends when several combatants unveil their guise and true motives. loyalties revealed, massacre ensues. ‘unlimited mind‘ pulsates, its bassline and sharp percussions decapitating those who dare to deceive. derby epitomizes the tension of the final showdown with low rolling tones, echoing chords and heavy percussion weaving the air like the rival in pursuit. with teamed forces and clever combat the traitor is annihilated from head to toe bloodbath and game over

next up on swiss imprint, caduceus records, is a release veiled in secrecy and hidden behind a mask of obscurity. whilst the producer behind the tracks remains in the backseat, the music sits at the forefront, with only itself to speak for.

keeping the momentum going seems fairly easy for barac as he unveils the long awaited second ep on his moment imprint. last years have seen barac evolve in a very lucrative way, yet only his best productions seem to be making their way top. it is clearly the case for this second ep which features two of his solo masterpieces. moment of clarity is electronic poetry at its best. barac delivers the proverbial summer sunrise directly into your speakers and ultimately into your heart. this track is meant to never be forgotten. without changing the soundscape too much barac has a slightly different approach on side b. things get a little more serious with sun & following being driven by a catchy bass and a haunting atmosphere. this tune is as bomb in the night as the other one is in the daylight.

like any good techno producer, moscow electronic producer harry light envelops his stage image by a veil of mystery, preferring to communicate with his audience exclusively through the music. its more than enough in his case. harry lights music is artsy and ascetic. theres nothing superfluous and it sounds extremely good, the louder the better revealing its great potential. regarding harrys stylistic range, it extends from well recognized german techno and minimalistic deep house to dub and deep techno. it also can be easily read by the label names where harrys music being released. theres anton kubikovs iconic label pro-tez, highway records sub-label whats in the box and trendy young imprint electronica. important addition to this list will be a release on kiev vinyl label artreform. on this new release titled resistance harry light has managed to show all the best sides of his eclectic sound.

we are delighted to welcome egyptology to the hands in the dark family. the parisian duo, made up of stéphane laporte (domotic) and olivier lamm have been active since the late 90s in the french post-electronica/avant-pop scene. sur les autres mondes is inspired by a publication by french astronomer lucien rudaux (1937, larousse) in which he imagined the landscapes of other planets in our solar system through scientific descriptions. partly composed for a performance at the prestigious louvre museum in paris, the album is the band’s first full length output since 2012, and we can assure you that it has been worth the wait. their sharp ear for detail and the epic worlds evoked through the album make for an auditory voyage which is as graphic as the words inked by rudaux. the duo is bringing the 70s kosmiche genre back to life in a very fresh, bold way, offering a strong shot of pure analogue sound and a fantastic, melodic approach to synth-based ambient music.

already big support by oscar mulero, shifted, blawan, jonas kopp, andre kronert and more. in what is already his sixth release on his own angls imprint, dimi angelis unveils his love for loopy, noisey techno. first drop vector shift skips the pleasantries and gets right down to it, fusing gritty saws and a rumbling bassline with ominous industrial stabs. on the flipside dislocated stays with the program, but opts for a slightly deeper approach, riding on an unrelenting hihat. follow-up and final track triplicity closes it down in style, sounding almost like some of the machines hardwired themselves. straight-up bangers, all three of them.

while unveiling the * mutant tournament* quartet last year, label boss nachtbraker was quietly hunting for new music behind the scenes. being the fine huntsman he is, he came out of the woods with sonic bits and bobs so delectable he had no choice but to spread them out over two brand new quartets. thats right, eight records in total, to be released over the course of the next 18 months. were delighted to introduce you to scott franka, whos at the helm of the first missive. this creative head from amsterdam has been making music since the tender age of 11, but it wasnt until he adopted his scott franka moniker that he really found his groove.

although it is not really their debut, gt003 unveils a new stage for the sao paulo collective and its eponymous label on their global endeavours, be it for the chosen source of material they offer or for the regal remixer recruited to enhance its flavours: discosmic royalty prins thomas. delving into the grooves we find ourselves amidst rhythms that rely heavily on the hypnotic power of an infectious bassline, powered by some greasy fingering responsible for the type of gravy that makes brazilian cuisine world renowned. the flip is served by your balearic highness, designing one of his mind-bending journeys by turning the original flavours into a dense compound of molten polyrhythms and worldly spices. an earful of delights for anyone fairly interested in sensorial expansion with high concentration of musical content, what can easily be found when such diversity is sought after, as has been gop tun s mission throughout.

new years deal - , fresh from guesting on the debut powell lp sport (xl recordings), and having released on labels such as the tapeworm, entracte, and halcyon veil, dale cornish now presents clap - four rhythmic experiments that explore the mesmeric tones of the digital clap using the ever-popular tr909 clap pre-set. sharing similarities in intention with n.m.os as strict as possible approach, pieces subtly evolve and mutate around the clap to generate motion, tension and action. oolovka takes an unashamedly joyous look at the clap, where melodic repetition whirls and whirls until it takes on a form of mesmerising minimalism – perhaps taking its cues from a modern take on steve reichs ‘music for 18 musicians’ as a backdrop for the clap to playfully roll over and mutate into a sound which is both refreshingly light hearted yet steeped in rhythmic experimentation. cxema takes us a into a tenser, more claustrophobic space where a heads down pulse keeps the body locked until the fog is occasionally broken and the tension momentarily cleared via delayed claps and familiar sonar tones. this vibe continues into isolate with cornish upping the anxiety by using the clap as a foreboding menace. coming across like an inspired soundtrack to a military performance piece the concern appears to revolve around strict precision and strict movement and how the clap can be used to enforce and heighten this functional display. before encore winds things down by stripping things back to the bare minimum for movement – a single effected clap gradually layers and layers itself to create pleasingly odd high tension atmospherics solely through a meticulous process of delicate rhythm and repetition.
