with the norwegian disco movement having given birth to many international dance stars, its most fundamental pioneer bjørn torske is an essential name to know. bjørn laid the foundation for the disco scene in norway that gave birth to prins thomas, lindstrom, andre bratten and todd terje. inspired by dj harvey, ron hardy and idjut boys, bjorn torske brought underground disco and house/techno (chicago/detroit style) to the country, developing a new style of dubby disco with its characteristic humorous and psychedelic twists along the way.
the reclusive cult innovator is back with a new 12” for smalltown supersound in advance of a full-length release out later this year.

following on from a hectic summer touring across the globe, ny producer joeski returns to the studio to create his next release, due on crosstown rebels in 2018. the release unfolds with the original version of i want you - a fierce, driving beat is juxtaposed alongside the sensual and smoldering vocal as the bassline rumbles on. pure 4am, fist pumping pleasure. the flip side introduces the disco mix of the title track. but don’t let the ‘disco’ lull you into a false sense of security. the track is fuelled by intense industrial sounding smashes and an abundance of layers that creep ever closer. a founding member of nyc’s the chocolate factory dj collective, joeski has been a staple in the underground scene in new york since 1991, holding down a residency at the city’s famed nightclub- roxy. he’s played alongside the likes of danny tenaglia, louis vega and roger sanchez. his career has seen him release on electrik soul, siesta, chez and camouflage as well as launching his own imprint maya records in 2001. this year, the prolific producer has juggled a jam-packed touring schedule taking in australia, new zealand, south america and europe, as well as ibiza for do not sleep and misfits.

fredfades is a norwegian producer specialising in the uncut raw hip hop. here’s his debut solo album, “warmth”. (vinyl includes download code) in 2013 he dropped a classic with ivan ave called breathe on kingunderground records. warmth is his debut solo album following a long line of singles, collaborative albums, cassettes and load of independently released projects. the album has 16 tracks made from jazz, soul and boogie samples with gritty drums and a dash of synth stabs, mixed by fred and mastered at strype audio in oslo by christian obermayer. the title track warmth is the last track on the album and was sampled from a live recording off one of fred’s favourite jazz records that is always on heavy rotation at the crib. guests at the table include med (stones throw), mndsgn (stones throw), ivan ave, (jakarta), moruf, koreatown oddity (stones throw), chester watson and more.

one of the uks most exciting and versatile young talents, route 94, is the next to make his mark on crosstown rebels with mind, body & soul featuring a body rhythm soul version from nyc’s joaquin joe claussell. cohort and leftroom boss matt tolfrey is also onboard, collaborating on second track habitual. the title track sets the tone of the release by heading straight into the late night hours with varied drum workouts and inspiriting keys that compliment the meaningful vocal. while habitual, produced alongside fellow londoner matt tolfrey who has been a mainstay dj, producer and label owner in the underground house and techno scene for over a decade, is electric and sensual with an enticing bassline. damian lazarus has enlisted influential nyc head and ibadan label co-founder, joaquin joe claussell to deliver a stunning body rhythm soul version, remixed in reference to his infamous body & soul sunday parties. here he delivers delectable keys and soothing brass tones as the serve of the day. route 94 aka rowan jones shot to fame, hitting no.1 in the uk charts with my love featuring jess glynne. keeping things largely underground, he followed with releases and remixes on leftroom, defected and hot creations. overwhelming success ensued as he performed at the likes of fabric, sub club, space, ushuaia, dc10 and many more. with an abundance of new material about to drop and a packed calendar of gigs already booked in for the coming year, this is only the start for the talented artist.

we are back again with russian artist, module one. at just 22 years-old he is already had a stack of releases including an ambient album on detroit underground. * hometown* was written in the depths of russia in a place called novocherkassk, whose industrial cityscapes made a great impact on the overall sound of the album. most of the tracks were written in a few takes. most notably, the track * innermost self* is a dedication to module ones grandma who passed away a short time ago. due to a tragic sequence of events, he was unable to see her before she fell into a coma. the track is overloaded with tension and fear as well as stark anxiety. vinyl tastes better…

a mainstay in the underground house music scene for almost twenty years, joeski makes his next move on the mighty crosstown rebels with a sublime ‘tribute ep’ to the great divinity obatalá. the ep journeys through three tracks, where ethereal layers are used to infiltrate the dancefloor and varying tribal percussions, native chants and vocal haunts flow effortlessly throughout. from yoruba religion, obatalá is an orisha, sky father and creator of human bodies. joeski explains -i’ve been wanting to do this tribute for a while now. it’s a creative musical offering to obatalá. i feel like crosstown is the perfect home for it too.- joeski’s roots are in the underground house scene of nyc in the 90s, where he played regularly at historical clubs such as the limelight, tunnel, palladium and roxy. later establishing himself as a producer he began releasing music on nrk, siesta, shaboom, tango, junior boys own and many more. he also runs his successful label, maya records.

new york noise describes the period in history (1978-88) where new york art and music collided. beginning in the mid-1970s, new york city s soho and east village became a hot-bed of musical and artistic ideas. owing to new property laws, downtown new york and its many warehoure and loft spaces became the home of artists, bands, filmmakers, studios, art galleries and more. in this small area partically every musican was also an artist, every artist a filmmaker and every filmmaker was in a band. this scene is documented over a vibrant ten year period and the book includes pictures of jean-michel basquiat, david byrne, suicide, keith haring, glenn branca, esg, madonna, laurie anderson, philip glass, afrika bambaataa and hundereds more previously unseen photographs. with accomanying text from david byrne, laurie anderson, cindy sherman and more, this is an essential record of a fascinating era in new york s cultural history.
