this record has been created as a resource for sample-based music producers and provides a selection of 4/4 grooves and breaks: from minimalist to intricate, straight to swung, and also includes single hits of vintage kicks, snares, hi-hats, toms and cymbals, all recorded at ata records studio a with 1960s analog recording gear onto 2” tape before being mixed and mastered for vinyl. simon allen is the drummer and co-founder of british funk quartet, the new mastersounds. since the band formed in leeds, uk in 1999 he has played drums on all twelve of their studio albums and toured extensively across north america, europe and japan. on his adventures with nms, simon has jammed with funk and soul-jazz legends such as fred wesley, pee wee ellis, maceo parker, art neville, lou donaldson and melvin sparks, as well as fellow drummers bernard purdie and zigaboo modeliste, all of whose music has profoundly influenced his “deep pocket” approach to the drum kit.

2016 wandte sich fkj an den meister der gefühlvollen stimmung, tom misch. als ihre zeitpläne endlich übereinstimmen und beide nach berlin brachte, stand einer zusammenarbeit nichts mehr im wege. ihre musikalische chemie war sofort offensichtlich und losing my way wurde an einem tag in den red bull studios aufgenommen. der titel hat bereits mehr als 50 millionen aufrufe auf youtube und ist ein favorit in den live-sets von fkj. der track wird nun auf 12- vinyl in limitierter auflage veröffentlicht, zusammen mit einer erweiterten live-b-seite, die 2019 an der o2 academy brixton aufgenommen wurde.

2021 repress - nun auch endlich als lp erhältlich! fritz kalkbrenner, der mann mit der unverwechselbaren stimme, ist zunächst vor allen dingen für >sky and sand<, die hymne aus dem erfolgsfilm >berlin calling< bekannt gewesen. dieser track basiert auf einer idee von fritz und wurde in zusammenarbeit mit seinem bruder paul geschrieben und produziert. es ist seine stimme, die der großen hymne der nuller-jahre den stempel aufdrückt. doch fritz kalkbrenner kann noch viel mehr. dies hat er mit seinem umwerfend guten debütalbum eindrucksvoll unter beweis gestellt. der berliner hat techno den soul zurückgegeben, und das nicht alleine wegen seiner warmen und kraftvollen stimme. zurecht war >here today gone tomorrow< für den echo nominiert. und zurecht ist es ungeheuer erfolgreich.

der wahnsinn hat methode: neuinterpretation der dub-blaupause -super ape-.
nachdem er sich mit sir coxsone, dem legendären chef des kingstoner labels studio one, zerstritten hatte, gründete lee perry zuerst seine eigene band und dann, 1973, im hinterhof ein eigenes studio. was aus der not geboren wurde, entwickelte sich zu einer einzigartigen erfolgsgeschichte. sowohl mit den upsetters als auch dem black ark schrieb perry musikgeschichte, insbesondere durch das 1976 veröffentlichte -super ape--album, auf dem er gewissermaßen das genre dub auf unbekannte weise aus dem mischpult brodeln ließ. für perry ist das studio wie ein lebewesen. ob er es wirklich so empfindet, oder einfach nur zu viel ganja in rauch aufgehen lässt, aber bei perry ist das equipment organisch, empathisch und intelligent. der clou: so hören sich die resultate auch an! lange bevor man das sampling erfunden hatte, schichtete er tonspuren aus tiefen bässen, echos und hall mit diversen, selbst aufgenommenen, gerne rückwärts laufenden klangsequenzen auf-, in- und übereinander. heißt: perry war der erste produzent, der anstatt der band die musik machte. das brachte ihm unter anderem den titel salvador dalí des dub ein. dass der Über-80-jährige bis heute nichts von seiner experimentierfreude verloren hat, zeigt der mit dem new yorker subatomic sound system besorgte re-edit seines meilensteins.

high mobility weapons unit continues its exploration, entering an unknown solar system and landing on a desolate mining planet. the counter rockets ep is the second release on the imprint, drawing influences from heavier, lo-fi territories, whilst still maintaining hmwu s characteristic space techno sound. the a-side starts off with the title track, counter rockets , which is a dj tool that combines functional bleeps with machine processed percussion. a2 serves up abandoned interstellar tomb , a fusion of atmospheric deep space bass and jacking drum patterns. on the b-side, deep sea deposit kicks things off with a poly-woven synth line that contorts and shifts throughout the track. finally, excavation site rolls along with its muted melodies and haunting fx, all built above a floor of sub-bass.

if you were to cut neville watson he would bleed acid house, he would also quite likely knock you flat on your arse for having the temerity to wave a knife at him, but thats a whole other story. for his first wu contribution he ventures down the ethereal proto-house boulevard. jacking 707 patterns, a bouncing juno bassline and outer-space synth lines take you into the upper atmosphere for a glorious airborne joyride. as ever, neville manages to evoke those 85-89 feelings without ever sounding merely retro or like some kind of pastiche, something that many attempt but very few manage to pull off. over on side u apiento, the force behind the magisterially brilliant testpressing website, chips in with a heartfelt homage to the new beat sound. another testimony to the fact that a lower tempo doesnt have to mean diminished energy levels, the orange place simply oozes class from top to bottom. like some lost ancienne belgique classic it pounds and pumps along, building up the tension all the while until the quasi- eastern refrain lets loose half way thru and all of a sudden a mystic portal opens up in the space-time continuum that leads all the way to southwark street in late 87.

next up on the infamous rhythm convert label we have mladen tomic who is fresh in our memory because of his great release on loose records! with a touch of the italian sound and vibe this is a great dancefloor orientated release. wicked basslines and cool edits do the work. off course we have labelboss tom hades stepping in for the uptempo techno remix!
