get 2 know nicky benedek: a producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and dj. his compositions bridge the nebulous territories of house, boogie, hip-hop, jazz-fusion and experimental new age. born and bred in los angeles, benedek began pulling inspiration from the city’s structural and visual dichotomies at a young age. he picked up a guitar at 9 years-old, taking note of any and all sonic surroundings, from prevalent west coast g-funk to the synthesized sound effects in video games to a herbie hancock record pulled from his dad’s collection. amongst a complex set of influences, funk took a hold on his heart by high school. bene’s world is benedek’s second leaving records release, following last year’s coolin’ ep as well as a full-length debut on the influential peoples potential unlimited label. his catalogue also includes collaborations with dam-funk, delroy edwards and tom noble. recorded between his koreatown studio and the west la home he grew up in, bene’s world captures the characteristically-la mingling of urban action and canyon seclusion.

trolldans once again opens its musical tome of fairy tales, this time featuring the gif-ted sound sculptor edanticonf. in his chapter of the trolldans volume, edanticonf presents us with the three crying fairies. it is a tale in four parts of desire and tears - as every good story should be. the first fairy tells us about a lake in the deep woods where a young princess called tuvstarr once lost her gold heart. no creature of the forest could convince the princess to let it go, and so she stayed there by the black lake until she turned into a beautiful flower. the second fairy tells us how the princess, before she lost her precious necklace, would ride like the wind through the forest on the back a grand elk. the princess loved the thrill and the elk loved the princess. vril steps in and actually lets us hear the noble elks heart racing from both the pace and his devotion to tuvstarr. the third fairy ends endanticonfs beautiful but melancholy tale with a glimmer of hope: by the darkest of lakes, the loveliest flo-wers grow. the end.

for the third whole truth ep, the nameless producer is joined by la vocal duo lucid paradise, comprised of ishtar and e. da boss (the latter is best known as the deep-voiced half of stones throws myron & e). on *party down* extends the direction of the tom noble mix of myron & e s *do it disco*, bringing beautiful modern soul vocal stylings to a limber groove that could have graced west end records in 81. the pair also duet on *who s taking all the love?*, while the whole truth flexes his dub muscles and drops some deeply burnt chords. this ep follows releases on the whole truths self-titled label in collaboration with uk dub legend erroll bellot and anglo-mauritian producer, singer and vocalist mo kolours, which found favour with the likes of optimos jd twitch and mary-anne hobbs (bbc 6 music).

just in time the almighty stock 5 comes around in order to send out a wake up call for spring. rico casazza blesses us with his soul driver ep. the title track impresses with a badass houserhythm, adequately supported by jazzy chords that generate the space for the misty, soothed vocal in the background. -soul driver- is an afro percussion body mover, not to be missed in everydjs case. this one’s followed by -wa lking backwards-, a huge and soulful stomper, catching our spoiled ears with some elegant synth melodies and truly massive sub basses. the flip providesa wide playground for notorious emixers. first on the scene are cesare vs disorder who implanted a serious guitar lick, making their -supernatural mix- a funked out trance disco housemonster. matthew styles ennobles this flamboyant release with a rather minimalistic approach towards the original. -megamix pa rt 1- is perfectly suitable to make the crowd all yours on a sunny sunday after hour morning.

the slat blinds in berlins panorama bar are part of the vjs equipment, and when the mood is right (usually around sunday afternoon),he opens them up to allow slices of sunshine to penetrate the smoky club air.it doesnt happen all too often,remaining something special amongst hours of darkness.but as ruede played the first version of shades in his last p-bar set, it seemed to happen just for him, as if he had written this tracks distinct break especially for this moment:everyone was mesmerized. re.you & rampa with a rmx for shades are also no strangers to such euphoria, and as ruede recently lent them his voice,they return the favor by building a robust, custom-made bass mobile for the a2.then, on the b-side, ruedes fellow band members from the noblettes make an appearance.as with shades,the focal point is also the big break,only this one has nothing to do with techno - its more of an indie-house ballad with dance ambition.
