that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

chicago house pioneer dj sneak and russian export tripmastaz have proven themselves to be a formidable pairing since their first ep landed on sneak’s imprint, i’m a house gangster, in 2014. in july, they add to their joint discography with a three-tracker dispatch on cassy’s burgeoning label, kwench records. the label’s sixth release, cassy takes a step back and gives this collaborative duo yet another outlet to showcase their dancefloor fodder, which follows releases on kaluki music, mr. nice guy, reptile dysfunction, ovum recordings and, of course, i’m a house gangster. extraterrestrial intelligence reminds fans of not just their deftness in producing tough house cuts, but also their prowess at manipulating the roland tb-303 to deal a solid smacking of acid. ‘ufo’ reaches out to roughen up the humanoids of this planet with the 303’s distinctive squelch and those clattering drum machine rhythms – a track that’s guaranteed to get you twisted. gruff vocals on ‘click thang’ break through as a tough bassline ensures your participation on the floor, and ‘last daze of dizko’ maintains momentum with a thumping bassline that any peak-time burner should possess.

“territory iii” should have been the next release on tÉnÈbre’s self-titled artist label. however, as soon as the promo landed, the cassette library went on a shameless beg, borrow or steal mission and we are now proud to present wncl032 – a mind-blowing 4 track ep that successfully blends bass, breaks and techno, peppered with tastefully positioned ambient twists in just the right measure.

conforce is back on his home label with four more of his richly detailed and hugely atmospheric techno tracks. its his first release on delsin since latest album autonomous back in 2017 and finds him in typical underwater techno territory. celestion kicks things off with smeared pads and rubbery, dubby drums instantly setting a hypnotic groove. the serene ambience makes it feel like youre deep down in the ocean and various deft sonic details drift by the keep things on the move. vessel is another fathom deep track with supple drums undulating on the sea bed as beams of synth light things up from above. theres melancholy in the pads that brings a rueful vibe, while zephyr is more troubled and turbulent thanks to the wet, gurgling synths and darker bass sounds. aerial rounds things out with heavyweight, rumbling kicks and ominous energy that keeps you on edge, despite the presence of beautifully celestial keys. as ever , it all makes for an absorbing trip.

what if music had no beginning, no end? can music exist for itself or of itself, without structure constraining it, defining it? can music be non-linear, non-narrative, simply experiential, existential? the second full-length album on mysteries of the deep, musica enterrada from portland’s william selman, neither answers these questions nor supposes them. but in listening, one can’t help but wonder: what if i disappeared into this record forever? in another time and place, william selman was known as warmdesk, an alias through which he issued a series of sharply precise minimal techno records. in recent past, selman shifted gears, shedding the dynamics of tension and release that characterized his previous alias output. under his own name, selman began releasing process-oriented, freeform experimental music on cassette-focused outlets like digitalis and hausu mountain. now comes musica enterrada, a diaphanous, weightless musical vision not unlike the theoretical square root of grm and popol vuhs early electronic forays. split into six tracks across two sides of vinyl, musica enterrada bubbles, churns, drifts, and dozes. dulcet tones pile up gently like waves on shore. patterns repeat and reconfigure, as if heard from different angles. rhythms appear, shift the frame, then disappear, into the ether whence they came. play musica enterrada on repeat. and if you disappear into it, fret not you have drifted into solace.

mitte der neunziger setzte sich terry lee brown jr. alias norman feller an eine symbiose aus techno und house, zwei damals sich eher gegeneinander ausspielende genres. heute ist tech-house dank deutscher labels wie pokerflat, perlon oder plastic city allgegenwärtig und hat selbst dem minimal-hype der letzten jahre standgehalten. mit letzterem label ist terry lee brown jr. eng verbunden. ein großer teil seiner langen diskografie wurde dort veröffentlicht. drei alben, unzählige dj-gigs, unzählige remixe, eine eigene dj-mix-cd-serie und immer wieder auch ausflüge in trance-, downbeat- oder breakbeat-gefilde – es ist eine erfolggeschichte. sein viertes album „karambolage“ ist das erste seit sechs jahren. gewohnt sicher und feingliedrig geht mr. brown ans werk. da sitzt jeder beat, da werden saubere melodien eingewoben und die balance zwischen musikalität und funktionalität ausgelotet. zum album erschien ebenfalls eine limitierte 7“ mit einem „karambolage-edit“, einem stück, das die fixpunkte des albums in einem ganzen verschmilzt. doch keine bange, es handelt sich nicht um einen liebloses medley. die edit-version ist ein ganzer track, der den status quo von terry lee brown jr. beleuchtet.

label friend jules heffner is doing his debut on terrace trips. -swamp- kicks off with some jungle sounds and a deep dotted bass line. guy from downstairs (gfd, robsoul) serves a smooth remix with a rolling morphing bass line and some crisp percussion hints. on the b-side -wharf- is with his flurry synths more like a fata morgana tearing you in some wet fantasies. a remix of this one is coming from anatol who just uses some synths from the original and a simple 303 bass line which turns the track in a more minimalistic direction you better use nobite on this one.

pretty great sounds from the legendary antonio carlos jobim – an album cut a bit later than his bossa years, but with a darkly sophisticated sound that’s pretty darn compelling! the album features larger orchestrations by claus ogerman, and in a way, it’s similar to the jobim album on decca from 1973 (aka maita pere) – in that it’s got all the simple elements of jobim’s earlier bossa scoring, flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we’d rank right up there with the modernist work of gil evans or duke ellington. a few cuts have a breezier sparer sound, and you’ll hear english versions of some older bossa tunes. titles include -dreamer-, -canta mais-, -olha maria-, -wave-, -two kites-, -this happy madness-, -song of the sabia-, -estrada do sol-, -voce vai ver-, -off key-, and -triste-.

the visionary from detroit, terrence dixon, is back to 30d records with an exquisite pack of vanguard tastefully built on techno. this fifth chapter of the exoplanets series is powered with two original cuts and a pair of remixes.
the homonymous title track, “digital ladder”, sinks us to a hypnotic state conducted by a dreamy and evocative sequence. the big dasha rush takes over the message and reframes it getting percussive expressiveness and savoir faire on her remix.
b side starts with the second dixon’s proposal, “this is a test”. same artistic tools, different discourse, shape and result. on this track, experimentalism gets us higher with a fanciful cyclic pattern, garnished with sporadic ascensions, that streams on a subtile bassdrum. 30drop takes the relay to carry up the message to his own stylistic universe constructing a fine solid remix.
“digital ladder” is an abstract and immersive trip to some place beyond the consciousness that relies into the core of the vanguard dancefloor. you can’t miss it!

heres an anthology dedicated to the 70s period of dolores vargas, known as the earthquake due to her wild and frenzied dancing style. in these songs, released 1970-1975, youll hear killer sound and production mixing funk, rock and pop with the powerful vocal style of the earthquake. including real gipsy-funk bombs like a la pelota anana hip or la hawaiana along with her bizarre cover version of chirpy chirpy cheep cheep and much more.

alex ferrazzi and matteo keemani a.k.a. blue mondays, longtime laterra friends and collaborators (with releases on sonar kollektiv, rebirth, snatch!, memento, manocalda as well), strike again. they do it, as usual, their very own way: shades of balearic flavours in there, but with a very dark and malicious twist. marvin & guy add some disco nuances (keeping it raw and obscure, though), while nick anthony simoncino delivers a solid, strict, gloomy dancefloor affair. no frills, mad quality.
