norm de plume has been quietly making a name for himself the last eight years with remixes for tornado wallace and ben la desh and ep’s for kolour ltd and his own vinyl only imprint plumage winning him a solid following along the way. his passion for all things disco and deep, dubby, underground house inspired by his musical hero ron hardy feeds through into his production style as well as his recently formed peaches & prunes party which boasts an audiophile sound system and vinyl-only sets from the djs. so when the opportunity arose to do a full ep with norm we jumped at it. here we present you with the castlecrag ep, a nod to the londoners new adoptive home of sydney, australia, and whilst his sound may be more akin to the recent musical movements of melbourne, the laid-back sun-kissed melting pot of the harbour city certainly shine through in the two originals and folamour remix on offer here.

memories — places, vacancies, allusions — are fundamental characters in mary lattimore’s evocative craft. inside her music, wordless narratives, indefinite travelogues, and braided events skew into something enchantingly new. the los angeles-based harpist recorded her breakout 2016 album, at the dam, during stops along a road trip across america, letting the serene landscapes of joshua tree and marfa, texas color her compositions. in 2017, she presented collected pieces, a tape compiling sounds from her past life in philadelphia: odes to the east coast, burning motels, and beach town convenience stores. in 2018, from a restorative station — a redwood barn, nestled in the hills above san francisco s golden gate bridge — emanates hundreds of days, her second full-length lp with ghostly international. the record sojourns between silences and speech, between microcosmic daily scenes and macrocosmic universal understandings, between being alien in promising new places and feeling torn from old native havens. it’s an expansive new chapter in lattimore’s story, and an expression of mystified gratitude. a study in how ordinary components helix together to create an extraordinary world.

incl dl code, dam swindle present ‘high life, their second studio album due on the 28th may on the duos own heist recordings. the heart of the album was recorded over a three week period at their amsterdam studio in march 2017, and the release will coincide with the fifth anniversary of the label. since forming in 2011, the dutch duo have carved a unique place for themselves in the scene. their sound - which merges references from multiple decades into one smooth aesthetic - quickly rose to popularity for its careful blend of soul and rhythm, taking cues from their passion for obscure records, with influences ranging from house and funk to afrobeat and soul. dynamic live shows and dj sets afford them a packed touring schedule across the globe, whilst their label heist recordings is credited with consistently breaking new artists. the album explores the intersection of live and electronic music, with much of the improvised material left largely untouched to maintain its organic sensibilities. dam swindle describe the album as an electronic album with a live approach, combining our love for house, ambient and jazzy harmonics, making it a record interesting for the club, as well as a pleasant album to put on at home.

word of advice to funk lovers, there is not a minute to lose. get on board of the big hustle’s spaceship. before we take off, let s do a little history. the band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70 s old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from steely dan and headhunters, to snarky puppy and soulive. with mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the big hustle s music has a very large variety of soundscapes. the first destination takes us to the washington, d.c. area with “turn up”. the groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by saad el garrab. and don t miss out shaun martin (snarky puppy, erykah badu, kirk franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! second stop is “a curse, a blessing”. it’s an instrumental very much in the freddie hubbard vein during his cti years. the last leg of the a side ends with an instrumental interlude titled “flying donut”. double tribute to jay dee and flying lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. the b side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving rod temperton the late great british songwriter who scored some of michael jackson s biggest hits. now the idea for this b side is to do the opposite approach from the a side. taking 70 s and 80 s original music and make them travel into time to 2018. we first land with a heatwave song named “the star of a story” from their 1976 central heating album. track 2 is a herbie hancock song named “gettin to the good part” from his 1982 lite me up lp. this time traveler ep journey ends with an interlude. called “gimme dat”, the song deals with the need of new music, new sound. again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. and do not forget that e.p. also stands for extended pleasure.

a creative director, designer and curator by trade, bals spends the majority of his spare time searching for superb, unknown, small-run music releases made between the 1970s and 1990s. while some of these are made available for other enthusiasts to buy via beachfreaks’ mail-order service, many more make it into the racks of bals’ private collection. with club meduse, bals is sharing rare, hard-to-find and just plain brilliant gems from his personal stash for the very first time.
for club meduse, bals was inspired by countless magic childhood summers spent playing amongst the rocks, beaches and warm seas of the cote d’azur. the compilation, then, is a soundtrack to the greatest soft-focus, sunlit teenage summer holiday you’ve never had, with a gaggle of forgotten musicians and overlooked artists for company.

get on down proudly presents another top-notch vinyl reissue, from their long-running series of collaborations with james brown’s famed 70s funk label people records. as the 1970s wore on, the classic funk sounds that had defined james brown’s backing band, the j.b.’s, gave way to the rise of disco music. fred wesley and his collective of musicians couldn’t resist the chance to make their mark, releasing “hustle with speed” in 1975, with charles bobbit and don love producing, and the godfather himself, james brown co-writing and providing arrangements. “hustle with speed” didn’t cross over like the band had hoped it would, but it was nonetheless remarkable album, featuring the j.b.’s signature funky style married with disco to exciting effect. all the while there’s still plenty to be had for the funk die-hard, from the brass blow-out jam “here we come, here we go, here we are”, to the trombone-heavy “all aboard the funky soul train”, to the powerhouse opening salvo that is “(it’s not the express) it’s the jbs monaurail”. songs from “hustle with speed” would take on lives of their own decades after the album’s release, through sampled appearances in tracks by jay-z, nas, eric b. & rakim, ultramagnetic mcs, epmd, and many more.

the nu-rons, were a family group consisting of two sets of brothers and cousins, the four young men in question being brothers daryl howard and raymond gibson (daryl’s mother registered him under his father’s surname of howard and raymond under her maiden name of gibson) together with otho bateman and charles bateman. they were all born and raised in salem, new jersey and from the age of ten and eleven began singing with a fifth member and gibson brother rudolph in a group called the gospel 5. they eventually decided to crossover to secular music and as a group known for their energetic dance routines they came up with the new performing name of ‘the nu-rons’ (taken from the word ‘neuron’ which is a cell that transmits nerve impulses). however rudolph was soon to leave the group due to physical illness. also daryl howard and charles bateman had also been part of a working group known as the devotions prior to becoming the nu-ron’s.

black truffle is honored to present the first ever reissue of whirled music by max eastley, steve beresford, paul burwell and david toop, one of the key documents of the inventive and energetic scene around the london musicians collective in the late 1970s and early 1980s. originally released on toop’s own quartz label in 1980, the lp features a remarkable series of performances made entirely with whirled and swung instruments and objects. part of the second generations of british free improvising musicians, the prolific scene centered around the performers heard here chafed at the limitations present within the music and ideology of improvising legends such as derek bailey, evan parker, tony oxley and john stevens. where the first generations of british free improvisers often demonstrated a rigorous commitment to non-idiomatic free improvisation and instrumental virtuosity, musicians like beresford reconnected with the dada antics of figures like han bennink and surrendered to joyful musical promiscuity, gleefully disrupting expectations around ‘serious’ improvised music through quotations (of anything from betthoven to reggae) and deliberate amateurism.

the first and only licensed reissue of this rare 1979 two disc set rescued from obscurity by chris veltri (groove merchant records, sf) back in 2004. few have heard it till now. t.j. recorded these four tracks in the south bay, solo-style after stints in bay area bands the mysterious minds and dawn & the sunsets. this release contains two 12 inch discs with four side-long tracks housed in a beautiful 70s style matte tip-on gatefold jacket. disc one plays at 33 1/3 rpm and disc two at 45 rpm. a download card is included.

the great metaphorical river has been lending itself to wise sayings for ages, usually as a manifestation of time, or in relation to how we see instances pass. it exists only as current, neither in the past nor the future, the present. rarely though do we look for guidance from the bodies of water that rest beyond a current’s reach: backwaters seen as stagnant and turbid. that they are, yet by nature they also collect, capable of shaping labyrinthine networks of canals and inlets with ecosystems all their own. backwaters let the present settle into the past, they’re a place apart from the flow where moments compile and mature.
kllo, an electronic pop collaboration between melbourne cousins chloe kaul and simon lam, waded in figurative backwater for much of 2016, amidst an extensive world tour. these were exciting times, the duo’s well worn ep furthered the promise of 2014 ep cusp, receiving millions of streams and landing kllo on festival stages as well as artists-to-watch lists. nonetheless, the stretch kept them far from home, isolated and vulnerable, treading through perpetual uncharted territory while yearning for the comforts of the familiar.
as a result, kllo’s full-length debut depicts inner adjustment to outer change. songs were written partially on the road and developed back at lam’s bungalow, a haven that harbors creative spontaneity and catharsis.

it’s been four years since zach saginaw, aka shigeto, returned home to michigan from a stint in brooklyn, ny, and since then, the multi-faceted musician has become a part of the fabric of detroit’s music scene. while always having a personal approach to his projects, saginaw’s influences for his third album, the new monday are more about the community of detroit than anything else. named after a weekly dj event called monday is the new monday that saginaw does at the unassuming motor city wine with a group of friends, the new monday is the result of saginaw diving into the city’s deep record culture, where there legacy of artist’s of the past help saginaw embrace his own contributions.

one of detroit’s best kept secrets, rick wade has been producing late night tracks and tapping into the essence of deepness since the 90’s. known for their universal appeal and appearing on over 20 different labels worldwide, soulful, timeless grooves are his signature. growing up in buchanan mi, 1 hour outside of chicago he was influenced by chicago radio station wbmx and the salsoul material and local stations that played the likes of al green and isaac hayes. in 1993 rick and dan bell started harmonie park to release house material and in 1995 rick started another label bass force primarily as an outlet for the booty / bass material that he records under the big daddy rick moniker. this time rick brings us “the depth charge ep”, three tracks of lavish organic deepness, with jazzy rhodes-chords, strings, trumpets, warm lush big sounding pads, combined with soulful vocal samples and crisp beats. london’s westlake72 contributes with a stunning remix of “be there”, injecting a fierce disco groove and vibe.
