invite’s choice records continues on the path chosen with a 3-track vinyl release which showcases some new and well-established names. hertz collision has the honour of being chosen to be the only artist showcasing a track on the a-side. this eerie, melodic track sets quite a special mood for the ep to start with. the b-side is opened by wrong assessment with a track that’s focussed on the low-end. this synth-driven track fits well in the mood set on the a-side, but continues with a heavier drive. the droning kick draws you in and makes you want to go dance the day away in smoke-filled rooms. savas pascalidis finishes the ep off with a banger true to his own style that relies on the drummachine for’s swing. this oldschool, loopy techno banger closes another outstanding ep by invite’s choice records.

after almost a year of only dancfloor related releases dial is back with an outstandingly special record: dirk von lowtzow presents his guitar solo work >tod in theben<. dirk von lowtzow, also known as a member of phantom ghost and tocotronic, creates a slowmotion drone-a-like folk meditation. the result is a breathtaking piece of deepest devotion, an incredible sound and room composition. at last years salzburger festspiele von lowtzow performed >tod in theben< in jan fosses same named theatre piece directed by angela richter.

first seconds into already 27th release on recognition, and we immediately know that there is serious business going on here. stunningly complex drum track goes like clockwork, only setting the scene for what is to come. forget the craft of drum programming - we are talking another dimension here. >modern dance< is like being suddenly dropped into suspended animation: having that peculiar feeling that the world around is accelerating to the verge of a seizure - and at the same time this very world feels so slow... unnamable, transparent sheets of sound almost give no room to breathe - but ones breath is taken away by the magnificent landscape it s about to appear. shapes shift under half-closed eyelids, and while the low, peaceful yet sad chant comes in, one can feel it like an omnipresent breath, burning hot and marble cold at the same time. this mysterious and heart-wrenching voice comes courtesy of one yula, and were gonna surealy hear much more from her in the future. and it seems that the beats literally start to boil... rhythms shuffle and swing, and taken the lack of floating melodies abundant in jaceks earlier output this track is even more outstanding from theproducers former work - probably acting as a bridge towards new visions, appearing in the confidence of the new, almost-perfect studio.

americhords 2004 enter ep get a double reworking by two of our favourite producers: dan curtin and mark broom. ohios dan curtin metamorphic records delivers two diverse interpretations of >tighter my grip<. his first >track mix< is more in keeping with his recent stripped down productions on tuning spork, with a sharply produced linear reworking which focuses in on the original tracks vocals and shimmering synth riff. his second >string< mix sees him turn in another of his signature techno-funk classics, as only dan curtin knows how. long standing d1 collaborator mark broom, effortless as always, rearranges >phoenix< into two pulsating 4/4 grooves, with the originals haunting string line riding on top throughout both. again, as with recent d1 releases, this is strictly limited vinyl run of 300 copies

this time a mega-deep, vast kick-drum, crisp crackles and loads of weird samples are causing a 'sunstroke' on the a-side. a deep masculine hum floats over the tune and the skillfully arranged track plays around with reverb rooms so cleverly leading one into a world of acoustic hallucinations. the 'minimal fox' on the b-side carefully stalks from behind before it unfolds into an incredible drive. only a few producers manage to create such a tight buildup of suspense with such a sparse instrumentation like trentemøller and the new ep is definitely another proof of his outstanding production skills.

ministry of sound present the ultimate guide to the biggest festival anthems rocking summer festivals, including examples single -ctwykm- and -louder- by dj fresh. mainstage acts such as dizzee rascal, pendulum, prodigy and calvin harris are present on the opening cd, with an eclectic mix of bass bombs from the likes of vato gonzalez, toddla t, james blake, sub focus and more on cd two. the third disc is an epic collection of big room bangers including alex gaudino & kelly rowland s smash hit -what a feeling-, david guetta, deadmau5, afrojack, laidback luke and other a list djs.

you can forgive a band who set out to create something even just a little bit different and get it horrendously wrong, but its tough to have sympathy for a band who shy away from the challenge altogether. such was the case with autokratz on their first album, animal, which, apart from a passable opening track, consisted of a series of bland electronic pastiches Ð dance music that conversely made the listener want to sit and wait it out. that didnt stop the hype building around the duo, though, thanks in no small part to the fact that the album was released through in-vogue french label kitsunŽ music. the confusing positivity surrounding the lp suggesting, perhaps, that style overcomes substance once a record company has received the hipster seal of approval.this time around, however, kitsune has stepped aside, with autokratz releasing the follow-up on their own label, bad life. but has the sense of responsibility that surely comes with this step made them re-evaluate their direction? has it inspired them to inject a much-needed shot of creativity into their work? not a hope. if anything, autokratz descend even further into mediocrity on self help for beginners. once again, their best tunes are loaded towards the front of the album, starting with the lead single, -opposite of love. its far from outstanding, helped in no small part by the terribly contrived lyrics, but does possess a catchy synth melody Ð enough to earn it a place on club playlists, at least. its a similar story with -becoming the wraith, which has peter hook on hand to deliver an overtly new order-esque bassline. beyond that, however, the quality dips dramatically. tracks like -the seventh seal and -r.i.s.e. are typical of the selection on offer, underwhelmingly vapid, derivative tunes which show up a disappointing, but not totally unexpected, scarcity of guile on the part of their creators.where autokratz do excel is as producers Ð a quality evident not only in their own work, but also in their remixes for other artists. unfortunately, this only serves to exacerbate their deficiencies on the other side of the control room desk. ultimately it may mean that, having failed to address the shortcomings of their debut, autokratz will be fated to be filed under -also rans in the annals of music history. thats assuming, of course, that someone out there will actually remember them at all.
