since it’s inception in 1991 on the streets of glasgow, soma records has stood for uncompromising quality of the highest level in every area it operates. stuart mcmillan & orde meikle formed slam during the acid house explosion in the late 80’s and then together with friends glenn gibbons & dave clarke they forged one of electronic music’s most widely known and well respected labels. with mcmillan & meikle as the figureheads with their slam project and influenced by the early detroit techno scene, soma quickly began to develop it’s own sound and with their eyes firmly fixed on a vision of the future, the team began the quest to instill their unquenchable thirst for electronic music into the world around them. soma quickly became an international brand as slam’s anthemic “positive education” brought about an electronic renaissance that saw the group thrust into the limelight and green lit the furious rise of the label.

soma welcome manchester born - berlin based setaoc mass for his label debut with the “surface for air ep”. a longtime favourite of the soma camp, sam’s high energy techno and creative style has been sought after for some time. with some huge releases on his own sk11 imprint, sam delivers four devastating, club ready weapons.
sam’s driving style is prevalent on all 4 tracks yet he still injects a dose of emotion in each as twisted sequences and ambient, ethereal soundscapes are peppered throughout giving each one a unique, distinctive sound.

following the critically acclaimed debut album from tensal, soma presents a specially commissioned remix ep to compliment the album. a varied collection of artists are prominent on the release with new and established alike, each delivering their own take on tensal’s originals.
uk producer pessimist opens the ep. his unique aesthetic of jungle/drum&bass - come - techno certainly makes its presence felt on the a-side as he delivers a monster of a remix, soaked in dark, brooding textures and broken rhythms. another uk techno export makes his debut on soma as shifted lends his remix skills to the package. pulsating and propulsive, shifted exudes pure energy with his version of santolaya. prolific french producer umwelt closes out the ep with his interpretation of belga. an old skool, electro affair umwelt still retains a melancholic edge to the production.

soma are proud to present the debut album from one of techno’s most prolific and renowned producers, tensal. as one half of the duo exium, hector sandoval has already carved out a career in techno spanning over 20 years, with countless release on their self-run nheoma, warm up recordings & pole group, to name but a few. in 2014, he started the tensal project as an outlet for his own productions which allowed him the scope of pursuing the more direct and minimalistic approach with his music and also his djing. after hooking up with the soma camp in early 2017 and releasing a collection of well-refined singles, tensal delivers his debut album, graphical. searching to go beyond the realm of standard techno, tensal lends his considerable production experience to this project and creates a sophisticated and immersive album experience that flows gracefully between idm and techno.

after a storming soma debut at the tail end of 2017, cleric returns with the “silent kingdom ep”. this typically intense and raucous new release features an epic vsk remix on the flip. another hard hitting and astute release from one of the uk’s brightest talents.

suitably deep production is always the order of the day with any edit select release and this one is no different. title track, the bridge, begins with a chugging beat before gradually undulating into epic soundscapes. flux takes a darker turn as twisted synths resonate throughout the typical atmospheric backdrop. tonalist creates more rhythmic scenes with intense percussive elements keeping the track moving.

soma proudly present the first in an exciting series of releases to celebrate 25 years at the top of electronic music as we turn to some of our favourite modern artists to reinvent some of the best from the back catalogue and up first is envoy s timeless classic, dark manoeuvres. originally released as part of the “coalition ep” in 1996 (which also featured the classic seawall), hope grant’s instantly recognisable hit is still found in nearly every techno dj’s record box and has continually served as a beacon of soma since it’s release. four new versions are served up here as dax j, norman nodge, obscure shape & shdw plus tensal all deliver fine interpretations of this soma classic.

on soma ep warszaw based duo mech installs four tracks in the cryptic reduced style of thomas brinkmann’s max/ernst series. the guys deliver an audio work production on resopal that hovers among forms such as techno, minimalism, and ambient. on all four tracks the elements are limited but the output bounces and rattles within - moving and exploring into more experimental zones of minimalism like plastikman, brinkmann, or former mille plateaux. a damn solid four tracker whether you know the math or not.

dax j with a slamming techno ep on soma

uk techno founders b12 return! the duos history famously started in the early 90s with their music appearing under a plethora of monikers under the b12 records umbrella - 12 inch vinyl with notorious cryptic messages engraved in the run-out grooves, before being collected into album form and release on warp. after a hiatus in the late 90s, the pair resurfaced briefly for some live shows, a flurry of hugely sought-after 12 inches and a 7-part cd anthology. they then abruptly disappeared again - this is their first appearance in 5 years, fittingly on glaswegian imprint soma. (their seminal warp records album was named electro soma...is there a connection?)

slam turn to long time friend and collaborator, len faki, to head up the third part in the series of remixes of their album reverse proceed and he turns in 2 fantastic versions amalgamating two of his top picks from the lp. slam also feature in this package with a stripped back dub version of ghosts of detroit.

mark henning makes a welcome return to soma records with the sublime sunday slide. a multi faceted release that definitely has something for everyone! title track sunday slide is fantastic, deep affair. a simplistic house beat is slowly added to by well-crafted synth work that opens and flows perfectly throughout the track. on the flip, youre digging into me, is a catchy house number with a baseline that is sure to stick in your head!

soma mainstay deepchord returns with part 2 of the luxury series. this double a release feature deepchords signature atmosphere rich tones and lush environments and also mark a slight upturn in terms of pressing on a more techno vibe.

another new face graces the halls of soma’s roster as american based techno artist jeff derringer make a blistering debut with panic. jeff weighs in with 2 top-notch hypnotic techno tracks and we also welcome a debut on soma from the incomparable mike parker who whips up his usual storm of sound on his remix of title track panic.

following their ongoing relationship with soma records, ukrainian duo woo york are set to release their new record that proves to be somewhat representative of recent dramatic events in their country. entitled i am against, both the main track and the ep itself are referring to the developments that lead to revolutionary struggle of the ukrainian people. fighting inequality, saying what you have to say and doing what you have to do seem to be the core ideas of the record. you might have figured that out yourself by spotting a rebel protester from january’s clash with riot police depicted on the record sleeve. the ep also features a special remix from uk techno producer, Ø phase. music-wise the ep presents the same idea: the epic energy of the title track highlights the drive that was fuelling peaceful individuals to go out onto the streets and fight for their rights. an excellent remix from Ø phase follows a similar path, although in its own original way that has made the uk-based artist’s name associated with the finest techno to date. closing the ep ‘in the end’ is a more abstract side of woo york’s music works that reminds us once again: every single act of violence is bound to come to an end at some point.

for its inaugural release, spring theory has tapped san francisco producer avalon emerson for a three-track ep. its called church of somawhich, before you get any funny ideas about huxlean wonder drugs, is actually a reference to san franciscos industrial south of market district, which has been an epicenter for dance music since time immemorial. the record pays homage to her long nights spent dancing and djing in one particularly loved soma warehouse.

dark maneuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. the 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. slam were very much involved in the progression of techno at the same time as envoy was creating tracks such as dark manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. the distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression.
