repress - j dilla is widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, having supplied timeless soundbeds for the likes of a tribe called quest, slum village, the pharcyde, busta rhymes, common, de la soul, the roots, d’angelo, erykah babu, madlib, and many more. in 2005, rumors began circulating about an album called “jay love japan”, a j dilla solo project inspired by one of jay dee’s favorite locations to visit on tour. after dilla’s untimely death in early 2006, the album became a lost classic shrouded in mystery, with only unofficial bootlegs and promo versions available. an official cd version was eventually released in 2008, but quickly went out of print. now, the album is finally receiving the official release it always deserved. j dilla’s mother ma dukes and her label vintage vibez music group are proud to present official vinyl and cd versions of “jay love japan”. with six soulful dilla instrumentals and vocal appearances from blu, miguel, j*davey, ta’raach, exile, baatin, and more, this 11-track collection is a perfect snapshot of late-period j dilla brilliance.

still hope is their second single and the follow up to motorway jam (their double a side with palms trax from late last year) which sees them collaborate with anthony anaxagorou, a british born cypriot award winning poet and essayist, whose poetry and fiction have appeared on bbc newsnight, bbc4, itv and vice. hearing his lyrics via their good friend simbad, secretsundaze connected with anthony and still hope is the fruit of their labour. the original is a potent and political spoken word piece delivered over a rolling house groove. definitely one for the deeper moments with its late night heady feel and full vocal not letting up. the poems in the heart floor version strips the vocal back and adds dramatic strings for a more direct dance floor approach. ex slum village detroit producer waajeed released a couple of killer eps in 2017 on his own dirt tech reck imprint so we had to get him aboard for the remix. his detroit hardcore dub does what is says on the tin and is a peak time slammer while his searching dub goes down a jazzier, spacey route with live sounding drums and dreamy pads.

crackazat returns to local talk with a second single from his album rainbow fantasia. this time two of the stand out tracks sundial and holding you close get the remix treatment by groove assassin and waajeed ! first up is nick moss aka groove assassin, his take on sundial is a rousing rhythm of soulful house that comes bumping in. he kept the essence of the original track but also added some lovely keys, it sure hits that sweet spot and you re hooked for the full seven and a half minutes. on the flip former slum village and platinum pied piper beat maker and producer-extraordinaire waajeed turns holding you close into something imaginative with its layered percussion, jammed keys and vocal arrangement. its every bit as clever as you d expect from a producer that always approaches music with a fresh perspective. to complete the package is also the original of holding you close.

new andres 12inch debut on his own label la vida. andres is one that really needs no introduction, but for those unfamiliar here it is: andres, aka dj dez, is one of detroits unsung heros of underground music. since the late 90s andres has built up an extremely respectable catalog of that blurs the boundaries between genres, most notably his records on kdj and mahogani music. not to forget, dj dez is also slum villages dj, has recorded many hip hop instrumental on hipnotech records, and his hand is on countless other detroit records. definitely one of the most consistent producers we’ve got here whose music can be summed up in one word: quality!

the mark that the late producer j dilla left upon hip-hop during the 90s and early-to-mid 00s is undeniable. his work with de la soul, busta rhymes, the pharcyde, and of course slum village long been cemented his prominence in the annals of hip-hop history. of the many words one can use to describe j dillaãs legacy, one thatãs not used enough is prolific. dilla made beats constantly. so new dilla compositions are still being discovered. one of the places where those works are still being unearthed is the archives of the neãastra music group, who proudly present here 8 dilla tracks previously unissued on vinyl. dillaãs legacy continues to be shared and celebrated by todayãs hip-hop audience ¹ with help from the tireless efforts of ne astra.

dj dez aka andrés returns to japans root down records for his second 7inch on the label. for those that only know dez from his andres releases you are missing a whole other side of what this guy can do. dez has been scratching, cutting, and chopping beats for the better part of 20 years as a dj for slum village, a member of detroit s 12 tech mob dj crew, not to mention countless amounts of productions, mixes and beats for other artists. here on this 7inch we have two rare examples of dez s inimitable style, raw, funky and timeless!

featuring frank and dank, phat kat and kareem --- the first on the beat generation release schedule is jay dee who inspired the above panegyric. he is one of the more prominent members of the beat generation. detroit’s don of the beats is widely regarded as one of the most important men in hip -hop alongside pete rock and dj premier. jay dee has prepared for us a feast of beats and pieces. his credentials read like a who s who of hip hop and r&b. jay dee’s slum village project has the dubious honour of being the most bootlegged in history. the recent album, fantastic vol. 2 has received superlative reviews. jay dee produced common’s like water for chocolate (lp) - a landmark album featuring d’angelo, dj premier, rahzel, george clinton and bobby caldwell. the ummah, jay dee along with q - tip and ali shaheed, produced tribe called quest’s last two albums beats, rhymes and life and the love movement. jay dee is the executive producer on the new erykah badu lp. he has recently produced tracks for the new de la soul lp, guru’s jazzmatazz 3, busta rhymes and the forthcoming jay z lp. jay dee was also the driving force behind the pharcyde and virtually the whole q-tip lp. welcome to detroit will feature a blend of jay dee’s unique hip hop and r&b productions, as well as left field twisted instrumentals and jam sessions. a perfect fusion for this phenomenon who is a dj, musician, jazz enthusiast and the hardest working hip - hop producer in the world today.

in the spring of 2016, detroit’s elzhi (of slum village) will release his highly anticipated album, lead poison. serving as a follow up to the instant classic, elmatic, lead poison is poised to become elzhi’s most desired album to date. made with the help of kickstarter backers, the album features a bevy of producers from 14kt to karriem riggins.

james -j dilla / jay dee- yancey leaves behind an impression on hip hop that will last the test of time. a bridge between hip hop’s underground and mainstream, dilla’s contributions ranged from single handedly defining detroit hip hop as a founding member of slum village to providing his production talents to common, d’angelo, busta rhymes, erykah badu, a tribe called quest, the pharcyde, the roots, janet jackson and macy gray.

his career began in the mid 90s as part of 1st down, which consisted of phat kat on vocals and jay dee on production. the group was short lived however, possibly because of insufficient support/promotion from their label, payday, but the two continued to collaborate on many occasions afterwards, starting with an appearance on fat cat song and its remix, from slum villages fan tas-tic (vol. 1).

lauer returns from mascats orbit to new york citys beats in space records with a new two-tracker, hands & feet / stigma. since 2012s mascat ring down, lauer ditched city life for a quiet village outside of frankfurt. lauer embraced the space for his young family and settled his creative headquarters in a quaint attic studio. the new environments and housemate, a slumbering infant son, inspired these two songs to breathe a delicate and patient air. recorded during the first summer of his new domesticity, both tracks swell with echoed piano riffs buoyed by lauers dependably precise programming.

on le rire ep jared wilson (7777 - skudge / detroit) leads the way with a pest chicago-house inspired rework, devilishly and deliciously analog without whittling down to a mere old-school homage, a sort of us-acid-dubstep version of addison groove, with a taste of slacker jak-beat for the nirvana generation! a melodic decomposer, scottish dam mantle (warp - ghostly international / glasgow) deceitfully feigns to mellow with what could at first glance seem like an edit. however deep excavations into the intense choir of >voyage vers l harmonie< leads to a surreal confrontation between a slum village like beat and a post-industrial version of melody nelson. thundery atmospheres, slippery slopes… the best way to pay tribute to luc marianni. famous for his duo as well as his label syncom data, nukubus (bunker / rotterdam) is nonetheless an inspired soloist, as this breathtaking remix once again proves. the 11 minutes long krautrock tunnel leaves many envious of its authenticity and sheer technical virtuosity. this swirling reinterpretation of mariannis work manages to leave the original behind and come into its own. its out of respect for the original work that nukubus requested to be credited only as a remixer. if youve bothered to read the few lines above, please remember it is both easier and wiser to form your own opinion with the vinyl in your own two hands. please note that the distribution of these eps will be accompanied by some very limited original editions of luc mariannis vinyls

andreas saag is a busy man. he just did some wonderfull remixes and he is now working on a special album for jimpsters freerange featuring collaborations with slum village, marc de clive-lowe, mr. scruff, domu, kyoto jazz massive and many more! in between he found the time to produce this fine broken anthem for 4lux. a heavily jamaican influenced party banger with funny lyrics. this rocks every crowd for sure! on the flip side there is a hot remix by the delgui crew that comes with a wicked broken-ska remix on the flip. another winner!
