next up in this ongoing split-ep series are two equally talented producers from different ends of the spectrum, both sharing their unique viewpoints on that special dreamspace of self-awareness and how the way there actually sounds like! following his explosive figure-ep just this recent summer, juxta position now reveals his more sublime side on these two technoid journeys. keeping it raw and beautiful, the analogue lover lets his synths engage in dialogue, floating through murky realms and simply getting lost in the groove. a new face for figure and definitely one to watch is pablo mateo. taking a likewise subtle yet distinctly more grounded approach, his tunes unfold slowly and each tell their entirely own storyline. tomo is an extraordinary specimen of how a track grows past its confines, into something genuinely touching and can eventually open up that space inside and what lies beyond!

deep, rootical lovers, darkly seething with one-step-at-a-time hurt and steely, vengeful self-esteem. hypnotic, stripped and desolate, with implacable drums and bass, dubwise from the start, the production is classic, unmistakable wackies, featuring fabian cooke’s scattered, abrupt organ stabs and minimal guitar-work, ras menelik’s masterful nyabinghi drumming, and harmonic commiseration by sugar minott and the love joys (with a strangled sob at intervals). over six minutes, the extended mix is different to the love power lp, and the additional dub, released here for the first time, is unmissable for its extra rawness and dubbed-out emptiness. plus thirteen minutes of blissed-out disco reggae on the flip: two contrasting dubs of the giorgio moroder/irene cara/flashdance cut from love power, both previously unreleased and a bit sick.

unterton kicks off 2018 sideways with three tracks of high-octane electronics by mark. 0-160 bpm in 15 minutes. previous eps for a colourful storm had a conceptual focus: the destructive effects of tech start-ups on berlin’s cultural landscape. sound-wise, they paired frenetic, experimental d‘n’b with musique concrète. on his unterton debut, mark continues further down a path of dark and psychedelic beat science. at times tranquil and hypnotic, other times charging forward between cracked whips and whiplash left-turns. “comedy is the dog that walks out of the room when you call its name.”

“never change a winnig team”. that s what radio citizen s niko schabel must have thought when he decided to release his fourth album once again on sonar kollektiv. after the success of “the night & the city” (sk310lp / cd) from 2015 and the productive collaboration ever since this seems like a wise resolution. schabel s idea to retrieve to a mountain cabin in salvenberg, tirol with his band and tons of equipment turned out to be an even more crucial factor to the cause. here they could create and record new songs and bring them together neatly for the new album. the 13 tracks assembled here on “silent guide” are – each on its own and in its entirety anyway – best proof how wonderfully this approach has worked out.

we are extremely happy to welcome jerome meyer aka von d in the evergrowing moonshine recordings family. von d, is renowned for his ability to fill dance floors, fuse genres and hold his own in collaborations with some of the biggest names in the underground music. with three albums and multiple eps under his belt for labels such as black acre, boka or argon, he is also recognized for featuring exclusive and unreleased dub or dubstep tunes, alongside his own music. with regular shows in europe, asia, new zealand, australia and five tours in the usa, his world fan base is testament to his skill. von d is on an increasingly prolific trajectory since last year. recent 12’s on scrub a dub and khaliphonic (zamzam), and forthcoming tunes on lion charge and moonshine have signaled his renewed focus on dubwise productions. the french producer is going back to his musical roots. he continues to evolve his style and sound, touring around and setting clubs on fire night after night.

the third release from wavefreform again comes to us from the east, and this time around it marks a reformation of sound for both the label and the artist. half of the long-running georgian duo greenbeam & leon, boyd schidt is a producer with over a decade of work already under his belt whose first releases emerged in 2007. as a solo artist, his career dates to 2010 with digital releases on georgia’s front rec, fvf records, and emote music, and a track on the new vinyl compilation from studio r°. with the hard, broken kick pattern, elevated tempo, and nods to electro, the a-side ‘phantom’, a collaboration with subex, is a change of pace for the artist and the hardest thing yet to emerge from wavereform. dubwise use of effects shows the same hands still at work, but the sound elements, granulated blasts of static and drop-based structure of the track hold strong parallels to the rejuvenated techno sound currently emerging from the uk. the b-side, ‘structure’, recalls the previous work of the artist: subtle, building dub techno rich in detail and with the dancefloor firmly in mind. there is clear experience at work here with his deliberate deployment and manipulation of elements as the track struts along while enveloping the listener in its smaller details. as it pauses and takes an extended breakdown, the details rush forwards, but it finds renewed force to power itself to the close. coming in this case from an established producer with a long history, this kind of control is not surprising, but it is more indication of the riches of the east that have yet to be discovered by audiences worldwide.

the dirty dutch! anticlub a notorious collective from eindhoven, the southern capital of holland, was inspired to push itself into a new direction. the inspiration came from a painting by an old lady that drew the attention and gave the impulse to create the album freaks and followers. as the title suggests there are two kinds of people, people who take risks and people who do not. as anticlub used to be a risk-taker but slowly settled in an unwanted comfort zone, this created dissatisfaction and led to a creative standstill. seeing the painting everything became clear again. one should not stand still but keep moving and evolve oneself into new areas that one has not yet explored creatively. as lessismore is from the same dutch city, this state of mind also hit the lessismore label, which inevitable resulted in both parties joining forces to release this diverse album by a former underground techno crew called anticlub. as the lessismore label is known for its typically styled techno, lessismore was searching for a new impulse sound wise and visually, to ensure creative satisfaction in the years to come. with this album everything came together and the lessismore crew reunited to renew their input into the label, which was once founded to be a creative platform and an artistic journey and in retrospective clearly not a platform where one should repeat itself time after time. freaks and followers is an 8 track album with raw electronic based music combined with a variety of vocal work by different new anticlub members. the overall feel of the album is a dark punky attitude that reminds of the good old days of rave, which in the early nineties dominated the dutch club and party scene. this period can be defined as being careless and not taking credibility into account, trying new things, being blunt and just partying your hart out. being older this is a feeling that will never have to die, proved by the old lady whose painting was used as the art-work of the album release.

a2 – lake people – tellap tacleipzig is calling. well known for his debut on kollektiv turmstrasses musik gewinnt freunde lake people impresses with his minimalistic trademark sound that dares to be melodic as well. great stuff for prime times and big rooms but keep away from pyro shows.
b1 – salvatore freda - invictionafter numerous great and ingenious releases on cadenza, liebe*detail, freerange and others, salvatore continues with another effective lesson in hypnosis and self-awareness. dont ask, dont tell, just see for yourself!
b2 – frieder blume – we play for love - frieder sounds like those worldly-wise professionals that definitely know there business. but in fact its his first track on vinyl and we all can imagine what this guy will sound like in a few years. we play for love builds and builds and builds and culminates in a climax… bam! rewind please…

patrick begins with his techno bomb “tooth n nail”, a track that showcases a heavy detroit influence with smooth synth work reminiscent of productions from robert hood and carl craig. midway through the track, patrick keeps us guessing with a wobbly synth line that adds playfulness to an otherwise straightforward, moody journey. an understated use of serene female whispers throughout gives this tracks techno classicism a fresh sound. next patrick gives us “davinches”, a chugging tech-house track that pairs a deep, buoyant bass line with a tight, resonant kick, giving it a dynamic groove. patricks tight percussion work keeps things moving with its rims, clicks, and ticks set against a spooky, playful melody that energizes and propels the track to its finish. fans of guido schneider won’t want to miss this one! on the flip, nyc’s elon of clink recordings fame, and a newcomer to klectik, takes on remix duties with a minimal techno take on patrick’s “tooth n nail”. elons version is a pulsating, stripped down mind-bender marked by sub-bass and the sporadic clangs of raw machinery — sexy! this remix maintains the smooth character of patricks original in melodic sensibility, but stands on its own via sparse rhythmic patterns resulting in a deeper, moodier treatment.

recording as lord cut-glass, alun woodward, formerly of the delgados, releases his first album since the delgados? ?universal audio? in 2004. extraordinarily ambitious, ?lord cut glass? was written, arranged and in large part performed by woodward, recalling the orchestral grandeur of his former band whilst forging a style of acerbic, sardonic songwriting all of his own. lord cut glass features galloping percussion, waltzes, marches and promenades of male and female harmony: delicate and serene creations punctuated by casual profanity and shot through with brazenly hilarious words-to-the-wise.

no matter what, an artistic work most likely results in the amalgamation of a whole bunch of different parameters such as what, where and how a creator may live at a specific period of his/her life... this being for much on the undeniable dimension taken by music on our existences and of course jays one... a man who, in addition to his numerous bookings, does currently like 24/7-ing production wise with this 3 tracker obviously conceived in the very depth of the nite...rubber face sounds as of those unlikely early morning deep bleeping dives into some wakin up city life. whereas deepen your mind seems like a never ending abstract frenetic journey to the heart of synthetized phonk melted with a drop of acid house inherited fx...dancers vibes€,ťbring us into the deep territory with some hammond style keys and tough brooklyn beats.

the 21st full length release on greyscale is by none other than the home town hero sraunus. a veteran of the label, we are thrilled to have the fellow lithuanian back once again. the depth of surrealismus is nothing short of amazing. how only 7 tracks feels deeper than any double cd set, we are still trying to uncover and understand the entire scope of this release. sonically, it is a true gem of pushing the limits. idea wise, this album is cohesive and awe-inspiring. holowuka is beautiful and gentle opener. it sets off a serene almost deep sea diving atmosphere with the long delays and low frequency chords vibrating through. the melodic elements open up even more, a vast world as the track evolves. from the low key and moody to the pumping aggressiveness that is hroniglas ii . a true monster with a sick combination of trance and deep techno thrills. jueootas conjures of memories of 1990s ambient techno with the light and airy feeling of nostalgia. a lovely adventure on the high seas. jurgynas continues this theme with a beautiful ride into a sound that is blissful and forever. some of the most soothing dub techno we have heard yet. lapunai is another strong candidate for being our most favorite on the album. featuring what sounds like excerpts of violin s over some amazing layered melodies. a shinning moment and a perfect example of a dub techno track s emotional potential. lastly, ramunanas submerges us in a beatless (but not bassline-less) sphere of magical and shimmering sounds. a true master-class of more ambient dub techno. sraunus is back and if surrealismus is any example of what he has in store, then everyone should bookmark his choice where he shares his latest news. we think this could revival any dub techno release for album of the year. it s that good!

being a product of the age it was written, slow clubs 2009 debut, yeah so, dealt with the all too familiar space between adolescence and the oncoming storm of adulthood. a boy-girl duo who played a flower-adorned chair live, they were the polar opposite of what was coming out of post-arctic monkeys sheffield. slow club were fun, cute, whimsical and all manner of other words just shy of twee - and they hate being called twee. paradise, however, is where the duo grows up. two years on, it stumbles out of a trivial, self-indulgent teenage malaise (where sexual adventure was priority for most) and carries itself with a sense of perspective that only adulthood can give - a darker, more thoughtful view of the world. for instance, on the poignant you, earth or ash, a song about rebecca taylor s granddad, her melancholic vocals (beautiful, as always) evoke an awareness of mortality for those around her: singing -and i know, soon you ll go,- her voice seemingly breaks under the weight of premature grief. whereas even love-wise (an inspiration every band draws from) slow club s lyrical output is glossed with a more mature and detached sense of sauce, with taylor crooning on where i m waking: -i can see you looking at me / you got the brains i ve got the body-.
