following their 50th release milestone cpu celebrate 5th anniversary with a 2x12- lp remix compilation. cpu has been reticent in regards to remixes, with a grand total of zero during its first five years of existence. this all changes with this dedicated remix compilation celebrating the label s 5th anniversary. the exalted roster have chosen their favourite tracks to remix from the label s back catalogue and are brought together in a very special 2x12- gatefold sleeve. b12, jensen interceptor and morphology all make an appearance alongside some of the label s seldom seen artists. there is also a posthumous microlith remix of tryphème - mélodramatique. electro has again proven its staying power and cpu has played a key role in championing some of the genre s greatest: bringing new artists to the front line and cementing the status of the established. this five year celebration showcases the diverse tastes and backgrounds of the roster, crossing many genre boundaries - all executed with precision and attention to detail that the label is known for.

this is a collection of works from british musician gp hall, recorded between 1994 and 1999. for over four decades, guitar in hand hall encountered many styles, jazz, blues, flamenco, rock, folk, and classical improvisation. all contributed to the creation of his unique style. emerging from the british blues boom of the 1960’s, he then followed a long and winding path through various scenes and cultures. in spain, he was influenced by flamenco master manitas del plata before touring europe with liverpool band casey jones & the governors. he was commissioned three times (twice by the arts council of great britain) for original music and was immersed in the avant-garde scene of the 1970’s as an improviser, a pioneer of electric flamenco and a composer of large-scale ensemble pieces. during the 1980’s hall turned his focus to soundtrack music before reinventing himself as the solo performer he is today. with this strong foundation he branched into a tactile expression of his craft, discovering a new style which he called industrial sound sculptures. these sonic compositions are performed on electric and acoustic guitars as well as the six-string bass and are played with various techniques and implements including slides, battery fans, the psaltery bow, razors, toys, velcro and crocodile clips which are fed through sound processors to create a rich sonic environment.

as we welcome another talented artist to our family we asked viken about the first part of a two part release and he told us it s really important to understand that this ep is a series of pictures telling a story. combining the names of all the tracks one gets this interesting and dreamy sentence, on a blue road a white shadow feels the winter. to translate these pictures into music, i needed a very particular sound. since i am a huge fan of jazz music i took one of my favorite records, used a lot of samples and reworked them in my own way. from the technical aspect, i decided to reconnect with my first love: analog machines. i love working with sound textures. i stayed away from my laptop and all my vst/plugins as i felt the need to compose these tracks in an unusual way: i wanted the sound to be really pure. that s the reason why this process was so essential for me. for me, this ep is the first one to sound like this. this is the first of two releases from a deeply talented soul. a patient collage of house, jazz, acid squiggles and deep emotion. played and loved all summer long by lee burridge at all day i dream, these tracks will stay with you through winter and into next summer.

you’d think that following “melodies of love” would be an impossible task. not so, if you happen to be genius brit-funk pioneers john rocca and andy stennett. on their more understated - yet, pound for pound, stronger - second record, pink rhythm stretched out to create a 4 track ep of richly melodic, exquisite beauty. in the process, they trumped their most well-known release.
cruising on a funk-fuelled journey from the swaggering title track, via the blue-eyed soul of “trust me”, to the stabbing staccato synth heat of “more and more” and back again (“india” dub) this ep has essential seared onto its substantial grooves.

having recently appeared on bosconi records and altzmusica, daisuke kondo is a producer on the rise at present. this outing on vibraphone adds fuel to that particular fire with four distinctive cuts that push to the outer edges of house music without losing sight of the groove. -hold on to love- is, on the surface, an upbeat, disco-infused house jam, but there s a certain trippy approach kondo takes in the processing department that edges the music into a different head space. -life- meanwhile gets gritty and bass heavy at one end of the frequency range, and airy and melodic at the other. -feelin blue- gets even dustier and scratchier with its sample treatment, and then -fallen star- lays down some unflinching machine beats with wonky, distant piano licks.

dj harrison is richmond va-based producer and multi-instrumentalist devonne harris. the son of a radio dj who introduced him to the world of record collecting, harris grew up with music, progressing from violin, to high school drum-line, to the jazz studies program at virginia commonwealth university. he also continued working with other instruments and developed an interest in sampling. his development as a producer at first, without a computer or sampler came first learning to replay samples on the drums, piano, bass or guitar. dj harrison finds himself inspired by local musicians in the richmond scene thats as diverse and nonexclusive as they come. among rappers, producers, punks and bluegrass bands, he falls within reach of an expansive pool of musicians to collaborate with. he lives and works in jellowstone, a house turned recording compound occupied by his band mates in butcher brown, a garage punk jazz funk group. hazymoods, dj harrison’s stones throw debut, was recorded there completely on tape, where the living room functions as a communal recording studio

the last few years have seen nathan melja really hit his stride, landing on such esteemed labels as mister saturday night, black opal and technicolour with an addictively weird update of the classic boxjam format. now he steps up to inaugurate dream real with three slices of upfront deviant business for all the sleazy dancers out there. there s no arguing with the rubbery bass tones and perfectly processed vocals on the original mix of -jerky teardrop-, but there s also the more wave-minded delights of the -blue mix- version of the track to suit more reflective situations. by way of contrast, -places we belong to- smooths out the mood on the b-side with a low riding slice of boogie that sports just a whiff of indie thrown in for good measure.

massive attack release two brand new songs, ‘come near me’ and ‘the spoils’. both songs are written and produced by massive attack’s daddy g and collaborator stew jackson and feature vocals from ghostpoet (on ‘come near me’) and hope sandoval (on ‘the spoils’). these new songs follow january’s release of the ‘ritual spirit’ ep, which was written and produced by the band’s robert del naja and collaborator euan dickinson. the video for ‘the spoils’ stars cate blanchett and is directed by john hillcoat, best known for his directorial work on films such as the road, lawless and the proposition.

funk was the syncopated groove that emerged in the mid-sixties through hits from james brown and dyke and the blazers. it was a natural development out of rhythm and blues. thousands of local bands tried to emulate brown’s success, and in the process created a plethora of rare and sought after 45s and album cuts that have been mined by djs and producers to fill floors or provide breakbeats. whilst the 20 tracks on this compilation would cost you thousands of pounds to own on their original issue, that isn’t really the point. instead you get to listen to magnificent grooves such as mickey & the soul generations explosive ‘iron leg’, andrew brown’s blues tinged ‘you made me suffer’ or the message music of 24 carat black.

manchester-based duo shield patterns return on september 2nd with a new album entitled mirror breathing. released on band member richard knox’s own gizeh records label, mirror breathing follows on from the critically acclaimed debut album contour lines in 2014 and 2015’s violet ep. where it’s predecessors took a more stark, electronic and processed approach, mirror breathing is an altogether warmer, more cinematic record.

testarossa is third studio album by brinstaar. he says that this album is dedicated to redheaded blue-skinned goddess. this work is reflecting brinstaar’s deep and emotional chase for the elusive moment of infinite bliss that keeps him alive and conscious.
while using mainly processed guitars for infotswetock and synths for mielisss, brinstaar uses a lot of acoustic instruments and field recorded sounds in testarossa now, thus creates much more intimate compositions. of course, his specialty mesmerizing synth parts and precisely constructed guitar timbres are still here too.
