attic music turned 15 and we celebrate it with a six tracks v/a compilation featuring a bunch of friends and artists who showcase the label’s sound signature as conrad van orton, pyramidal decode, kaiser, mary yuzovskaya, allen, maurizio cascella and the label owner fabrizio lapiana.

copenhagens music for dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by jan schulte. according to all maps and witness accounts, germany does not officially have any tropical forests. this is of no concern to schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. most of the tracks picked by schulte were released on small labels in the late 80 s. the musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in germany. at that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging -world music boom- already snowballing into the mainstream. but these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. schulte himself points to his -general fascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. somehow i think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks,- he explains....

strange alliances holds two striking and contemporary tracks by the tel aviv native – who also has releases out on turbo and life and death - plus remixes by trikk and rebolledo. and so it seems the amsterdam based label has another winner on their hands. with autarkic having an exceptional personality one would expect the same from his music. and this is exactly what you get with strange alliances, as his originality shines through on both tracks. interesting fact is that autarkic used a lot of live instruments and his own vocals on both tracks, adding to the ingenuity of the dgtl 006 release.

fresh from starting his own label insult to injury, timothy clerkin returns to ransom note records with the knife edge heart ep. three tracks of stirring techno for dark basements and warm hearts. timothy is a very interesting man, but hes also the sort of person whod rather let his music do the talking, so well move on swiftly. the mvp here is knife edge heart, an unabashed pop song whose shimmering exterior is cut through with flashes of steely darkness. frequent collaborator natalie reiss’ glacial voice is held at the perfect level of remove, while timothy allows his love of shoegaze to blossom with a guitar line that seems to extend like a ladder to the stars. with you bridges timothys opposing impulses, balancing sparkling synths and a celestial vocal sample with churning low-end, while divisive is paranoid warehouse techno at its very best. with his debut solo album out soon on phantasy, gabe gurnsey of factory floor stops by for a lurching, seasick remix of knife edge heart that sounds like the onset of the robot apocalypse weve all been promised for so long. after cutting his teeth as one half of eskimo twins, timothy launched his solo career in 2014 under the now-retired heretic moniker. hes since released on labels including throne of blood, hard fist and days of being wild. timothys last release on rsn was the serenade ep, which brought us plenty of special moments last year - most memorably andrew weatherall closing out his houghton quarry set with execute. heres to many more this summer and beyond.

growing up in the bustling port city of busan and running his own record shop there from the late 70s, kim byoung duk had a front-row seat to the finest in foreign record imports and a taste for the psychedelic that naturally evolved into spiritual, ambient and avant-garde sounds. his growing interest in tao philosophy and the meditative music that accompanied it provided a fertile environment for his audio imagination. unhampered by limited access to musical gear, he made use of a wide assortment of self- sourced pots of various sizes and curvature, cymbals, wooden sculpted flutes and percussion tools—each chosen for its unique harmonic vibration—to create an entirely new and unique body of work. experiment no. x retraces the oeuvre of kim byoung duk, assembling tracks from experiment no. 2, pot concerto and new trilogy, illustrating a meditative journey from the freeness of the tao sound, in the borders of ambient music and the avant-garde, to later groove-oriented jams which introduce rhythmic elements to the palate. this fully licensed release is the first collection of kim byoung duk ,s music, remastered from the original tapes and including for the first time on vinyl songs from the very scarce cd new morning. includes four-page booklet with photographs and an interview from kim ,s personal archives

southern italian sociologist, dj and electronic music producer simone gatto is about to release his second album, heaven inside your frequencies, in december 2017.
gatto’s second album represents a complete excursus of his personal and professional paths, into which he combines music, words, studies, researches and experiments. along with the album, split in two parts and to be released on both his labels out-er and pregnant void, the artist is also releasing his first essay, named as the album, the latter offers a theoretical and practical analysis on the use of sounds and frequencies in diverse areas of interest, dedicating space to music therapy and primordial techniques as well as their application in the current digital and virtual era.
both the album and the essay result from gatto’s personal experiences as well as his ten-year’s artistic career: the love of his motherland and his parents, the first approach to clubs, the studies about the potentiality of frequencies, the electroacoustic experimentation and last but not least, the aesthetic sonorous research.

recorded on september 10, 1964, prior to his well-known association with john coltrane, this eponymous album (later renamed pharoahs first) is the debut release of the iconic tenor saxophonist. (yes, there are some spelling oddities here: the artist birth name ferrell only later changed the spelling from the standard pharaoh to the more personalized pharoah.) with one foot in mainstream jazz – pianist jane getz had played with charles mingus and the other, tentatively at times, in the avant-garde, this is a fascinating glimpse of sanders’ style before he wielded the unremitting fierceness of his playing with coltrane and the modal mysticism of his later solo albums on impulse. interestingly, in recent years he has deployed a more polished version of this sort of vant-flavored bop, bringing his career full circle and strongly suggesting that the hybrid heard here was not due to any failure of nerve on his debut but rather was the cornerstone of his conception. esp-disk has issued this album under three different covers, for its 21st-century reissue on vinyl, we have chosen to use the second and most beautiful. it is augmented with liner notes by a current esp-disk’ artist, tenor saxophonist ras moshe burnett of the red microphone, who can be heard accompanying amina baraka on their eponymous 2017 release.

mister mellow moves further away from the synthesizer-heavy sounds of the recent washed out releases and more band-driven sound of his work on iconic labels sub pop in america, and domino in europe. on mister mellow, greene draws from the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète and plunderphonics artists such as the residents. combining styles as diverse as free jazz, house, hip-hop and psych together with interlude-esque voiceover samples, often pulled from anonymous youtube vlogs, he creates a busy, chaotic, and caricaturish mix that mirrors the claustrophobic, hyper-stimulated psyche so familiar to young adults. as he continues to carve out his innovative sonic identity, influenced by the world around him but unafraid to buck trends, it’s fitting that greene has partnered with legendary hip hop label stones throw records, long a home for beat-loving musical rebels. his approach to releasing music is every bit as individual, too: in an environment where compiling singles into an album format or working with a single video director are the norm, greene has chosen to commission eleven different artists to bring the visual aspect of his fully-realised album project to life. on mister mellow, washed out steers clear of emotion to empathise with the minutiae of the world around him. ive been much less interested in sentimentality and emotion for the past couple of years, says greene, in some ways, i think its a reaction against getting older and having more responsibilities. maybe i’m just nostalgic for a time in my life where i could just relax and block out the world for a moment. though mister mellow is an intensely personal album, its ideas and observations speak to the lived experience of so many young adults, an experience that we come to see as both funny and sad.

paul hester created his cult moon music label in 1997 as a portal for his own productions and sounds. the label was short-lived, with only 3 releases in it s catalogue, all produced by hester himself. those few releases on moon are now highly sought after among house and techno aficionados who are forever seeking that deeper groove. the interesting part of this story, beyond the amazing music that was released, is that there are many other tracks that never saw the light of the day, thus leaving the full moon story untold. roll on to the year 2000, hester unleashes the never enough ep, a 4 track collection of tracks that ooze his own unique sound. deep, rolling, crisp drum programming, breakbeats and swelling synth pads all form the classic moon music vibe. this fully remastered reissues tracks are all lovingly transferred from paul hester s private, personal dat stash. classic, deep uk techno sounds from the pre-millenium era, re-presented for the first time for 2017s dancefloors. across this ep we are treated to a sound that is timeless and will undoubtedly gain paul hester new fans while reminding those of us who were there in the late 90s / early noughties about his subtle and uniquely fresh production style.

it took me a couple of years get invited to christophe de groot’s (aka circadian rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his sonic archive. but time tells and basic moves 02 is what came out. the two tracks were recorded at earguard studio in brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons. “frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo.
i’m super happy i could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master dat tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. we had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini dat cassette. after a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “a dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”. “house speaker call” originated in proto-techno forms. christophe never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. as a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit. tune your cells into his vibrations and get ready for these two timeless club tracks.

dele sosimis album you no fit touch am was released in 2015 to much universal acclaim. a perfect document of the lessons the keyboard master and vocalist learned in fela kuti s ranks during the 70s and 80s, but brought firmly up-to-date and with contemporary social comment as vital to the afrobeat genre as any rhythm or instrument. in 2016, to take that forward thinking even further, wah wah 45s commissioned four huge remixes from a quartet of the uk s most interesting new production names. that was just part one of the story though this year the label can reveal the final four remixes to be taken from this hugely popular and influential project.

voodoo down returns to the compilation series that started it all: possible side effects vol.1, released in late 2012, was the first release on the brooklyn-based label and marked the inception of a concept ep series that would come to define the labels sound. featuring an a1 cut by german journeyman producer stl and rounded out by the label founders’ eclectic techno styles, pse vol. i was the perfect vehicle for the producers still working to carve out their own individual aesthetic. now with a dozen releases under their belt, the founders l estasi dell oro, nconduit and 12 x 12 have returned to their roots and this time recruited the prolific berlin-based producer deadbeat for volume three of the series. like the first two volumes, its a slightly chaotic mix of beefy dance floor tools and heady experimentation. the separate personalities shine through more than ever on this release. vdr always striving to keep things interesting.

it is in this exact same place that the american singer/vocalist craig louis higgins jr. (paranoid london/mutado pintado/black daniel), the australian singer/composer saskia sansom and the fench electronic music composer marc nguyen tan (colder) got together to record these songs during the year 2012. however some listeners will find interesting to know, that until today, the three of them have never actually met in person.

monsieur guillaume berroyer — the infamous ark — recently underwent a sort of sea change in both his artistic and personal life. anyone following his career with even a passing interest knows of his long resume (collabs with pepe bradock and cabanne, dolibox, mika weill, releases on brif, karat, circus company, perlon…) and has heard tales of the studio fire and the creative energy shift and all of the stories associated with his frenzied live performances and dj gigs. great stories are fun and build mystique, but as most heads know the music more than measures up to the legend. his recent >arkpocalypse now< full-length showed a matured craftsman that is not so much waxing introspective as he is distilling his signature sound into something manageable enough to truly adapt to all of his musical tastes.

go hiyama has always been a very interesting artist for me, ever since he emerged in 2002 on james ruskins coda label. both his musical & production style have changed a lot since then and i personally feel theres still no one out there who comes near to what he is doing. we planned on working together since a long time now and i am glad we finally made it work with this brilliant 4 tracker. no fillers. all 4 tracks have been tested thoroughly in my sets and always stood out as highlights.
no compromises on these fierce punishing drums, delivered by one of the most promising talents in techno the last years. hope you will enjoy playing these tracks as much as i do. (kr!z)

on january 1st 2010, the first single released by a new vinyl label kanu kanu will appear in the shops worldwide. the aim of the label, run by a producer hatti vatti (mindset recordings), is to promote interesting and original artists from the world of dub-tech, minimal dubstep / ukg. the material for the single catalogued as number 001 was created by the musicians from three countries: echo_tm from poland, echo ranks from great britain and biodub from germany. the person responsible for the overall conception is hatti vatti from poland, currently living in cairo, egypt. the result of this collaboration is a fusion of meditative bass, dub, dub-tech, minimal and one of the most interesting voices of contemporary reggae. the record is released in a very limited edition (300 copies) and it is pressed on a beautiful blue vinyl!

like many of us over here at bear towers, giorgio sancristoforo aka tobor disco experience has an unhealthy interest in the 1970s - the instruments of bob moog, vocoders, alan parsons - the cult sci fi series space 1999 - and here hes used the decade as a sonic palette to create the kind of ep that gets the whole office (ie: both of us, on pcs at home, occasionally) sitting up and listening. opener disco moog has already been used on our rools for rules compilation earlier this year and had many beards twitching at the prospect of forthcoming vinyl. shooting star is a more uptempo affair with blissful chords, slap bass, disco handclaps and gios trademark vocoder. i feel loved is a personal favourite of stevie kotey with anthem written all over it. this awesome clavinet workout has such a good vibe about it you cant help feeling nothing but loved. it could easy be mistaken for alan hawkshaw super rare bruton library track.
