there is no doubt that the native detroiter jeff mills, as >the wizard<, put his own mark on the cologne psycho thrill club-nights and thus the entire west german rhine area in terms of techno in the years 1991-2007 through his innumerable appearances in the cologne clubevent institution. mills track >mosainga<, which was given to claus bachor in 1996 for publication on his own label, also played a significant part in this well beyond the 2000s. in 1997 for the first time (unofficially) released in advance via roland caspers essence label on a >psycho thrill ep< white-label limited to 500 copies, mosainga finally appeared remastered in 2004 on psycho thrills own >motor city dayz vol.1< (ptne 2111) compilation including a dj-friendly bonus loop and then finally made its way straight into the clubs of the world. the track then received renewed attention beyond its natural decay value in the cologne bnkr years (2011-2016), which were deeply shaped by psycho thrill itself for colognes nitelife, in which the cologne label completely redefined the entire techno culture of the dome metropolis in its own way 2 be propelled forward once again.

for the ninth instalment of the konstrukt series it is samuel van dijk’s moniker mohlao that graces the spot with a five track minimalistic exploration of the deep electronic realm. targeting the fiction of a journey through metropolitan areas during nightfall, mohlao’s sound gives us comfort and stimulates our dream-state awareness. the environments that appear are real, yet we are more than passive observers.

a little while before metro area came into life, there was acronym city

somewhere between electro soul and melodramatic pop. music focused towards the youth set in some strange dream. not sugarcoating anything. these late 80s / early 90s recordings are something to truly behold! . aset was a collective founded by a group of individuals deeply involved in community improvement initiatives and the struggle for justice and equality. a project that would link motivated adults with talented young people in the washington, dc metropolitan area. the compilation takes songs from three released projects of aset, and one semi-unreleased single. latonya, a spunky 11 year old kid singing about divorce, love, and dancing. the poster child of aset. treo, a trio of high school gals in harmony singing about love and relationships. whax, the high school boys who were a bit strangr the silly side of aset. all backed by the aset players. release comes housed in a newly designed jacket with inner sleeve containing info on the label/artists and an interview with the label director, mba mbulu.

four tracks of ny-flavoured boogie and house goodness - quality is the key word from copenhagen based music for dreams and here is another home run. willie graff splits his year between dj residencies in new york and ibiza. in this new outing with studio partner darren eboli, the influence is, as the title suggests, clearly ny-based. over only four tracks, the pair manage to craft a stunningly comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of dance music. opening track -love flight- staggers into a lush string-driven groove that recalls the glory of metro area meets wally badarou vibes. minimal yet playful, it lounges somewhere in the depths of the house tradition, calling on familiar sounds while throwing in odd details along the way (harmonicas?). it takes both skill, devotion and a sense of humor to pull this track off, making for a strong opening. -moon tan- lingers on a metallic hook that drags you into a plethora of percussion followed by a rubbery soft baseline. dubby key work would suggest this was a new wave band jamming at compass point, while the icy chill of the xylophone transports you into 80s italo territory. -second sun- pulls out the bag of boogie tricks, relying on a firm but humble baseline and smattering drum machine claps. nile rodgers-style guitar licks guide us onwards into a well-orchestrated jam that builds up and breaks down with perfect timing while dreamy chords reach for the sky. -first light- keeps the groove tight while dipping over towards more balearic temperatures. steeped in a watery atmosphere and gentle organic percussion, it focuses in on a trance-inducing arpeggio that lulls you in to the swaying badarou-style synth swirls that intercept it.

sometimes there’s a huge talent out there and you desperately want the whole universe to discover it. that’s pretty much the story of parisian label chuwanaga with young french artist koji ono, composer and producer of these four precisely crafted gems, recording everything by himself. brilliantly mixed by greita from disques flegon, his first ep incognito is the product of a lot of influences, from metro area vibes to the original britfunk sound. with an inner sense of elegance in the arrangements - something we may link to his japanese heritage? - the whole ep brings musicality back on the dancefloor. we believe this could be the beginning of a great story for this talented musician, koji ono emerging from the incognito shadow to the whole light of the world. don’t miss out!

following excellent releases from skatebard, les crocodiles and lunar concept amongst many others, pleasure unit turn to cut the rug crew member mike misiu for their latest instalment of cool-headed modern disco. do what you need sports a metro area demeanour, with a classic vocal hook sprinkled in at opportune moments for maximum impact. the dub mix is no less satisfying, even with the famous sample rubbed out, but in fact the real pleasant surprise of this release is b2 jam love talk. with its funky midtempo 90s breakbeat and heavy-hitting piano, it s an addictive party starter that harks back to the acid jazz days while still fitting right into the here and now.

we are proud to announce the first release on the shop’s new label house of love vinyl with a strong ep by long time friend of the shop modaji. side a kicks off with the sizzling ‘razzle dazzle disco’ gyrating the house grooves alongside vocal demands that provide a nostalgic setting with a modern thinking twist. ‘times change’ is a thriller killer for sure with it’s metro area like hooks. on the flip there’s more of the same with “i wanna go dancing, i want to go have some fun” as the main hook for ‘lisa at the party,’ whilst transforming us back to strobelights and dry ice filled dancefloors. ‘headwork’ closes the ep off with a straight up jacking swinging groove supplemented with swirling pads and sharp stabs. this is one ep not to be missed.

paper recording are back on vinyl with a fantastic debut 12- from italian duo soundersons, who have come up through the underground bologna house scene. can t get enough is a deep electro-funk slice of nu disco with diana g on vocals. it s got 80s synths and squelches, vocal hooks a plenty, clonking percussion, rhodes and that metro area / tom tom club vibe. parts i and ii are split in to vocal and instrumental over one side on continuous play for maximum dance floor action. on the flip, the mighty dj spinna brings his a game with a deep nyc take that is underground house at it s best. he uses synths, arps and the vocal to slowly build the remix that hits it s peak at the end. finally education finished things off with a raw disco cut up that hits the floor running and keeps going full pelt. one for the dancers.

storming into our fifth release from the dirty shores of new jersey, green village is proud to present village elders 001, a compilation ep featuring new material from artists who have already flown the flag for gv. the a-side is held down by the plan b duo of dj spider and dakini9, purveyors of the metro area s dirtiest and deepest house sounds. spider gets toxic a second time,following his 2013 instruction drop with toxic trace 2, a thickly layered deep house cut whose seedy percussion underbelly contrasts vividly with the more traditional deep house pads that accompany it. dakini9 s lost paradise is dark and mysterious like its title, the hats, trumpets, and vocals emerging in tangled webs of dub effects, a strong follow-up to her dope ep for the label. disaroen, a duo from toronto, half of which previously appeared on gv, turns in the most barren of the four tracks, serious doorman, heads-down techno that crackles to life halfway in and an auspicious debut for a promising new group. last is nj heavyweight nicuri, a rising star whose ripples of time closes the ep in his signature searching, melodic style.

featuring an infectious cross dialect narrative (swedish/finish) provided by international songstress tigerlight, the track comes across like a meeting between metro area and abba - two acts payfone cite as big inspirations.

after time spent whipping up singles for moodmusic and my best friend amongst others, maurice aymard makes the leap to the long-player with a selection of jams that reflect his propensity for live instrumentation and thoroughly musical constructs within the disco-inflected realms of house music. as if metro area were played out by hand, tracks such as home groove hard on plush live bass lines, poignant rhodes chords and romantic lead synths. gui boratto turns up to chip in to colours & drops with its more prominent techy backbone, but that s offset by the non-dancefloor roll of 1994 . it s a diverse album that provides the perfect platform for a skilled craftsman to explore, er, his craft.
