per martinsen aka mental overdrive is one of norwegian dance musics founding fathers. alongside friends such as bjorn torske, biosphere, rune lindbaek and dj strangefruit, martinsen was integral in laying the foundations of norways now blossoming dance music scene during the late 1980s and early 90s. as a producer, he cut his teeth making house, techno and hardcore for belgian imprints ssr and r&s records at the turn of the 90s. he was a regular at the r&s studio in ghent, programming and mixing for other artists including joey beltram. since then, per has continued to produce and release quality electronic music, both under his mental overdrive alias (see releases on full pupp, smalltown supersound, rett i fletta and his own love od communications imprint), and as part of outfits such as frost (alongside his other half, aggie peterson) and illumination/ chilluminati. per is featured heavily in ben davis and pete jenkinsons documentary film chronicling the rise of norwegian dance music, ‘northern disco lights.

mental overdrive, norwegian gran ol wizard of techno, owner of love od communications starts of with “clocked”, a colorful and moody track with a touch of grittyness. thomas urv, ploink label head and one of norwegian techno’s main protagonists, brings a signature raw high energy techno track “6.24 con dao”. per hammar, swedish producer and dj based in berlin, the captain behind dirty hands and 10years labels delivers a steady dubbed hypnotic house track “blank space”. thomas skjaerstad from trysil, norwegian winner of burn residency 2017 finishes the ep with a punchy, dark spaced out techno track titled “space x (sommeroya edit)”.

ghent based pianotrio steiger have earned their place in the ever growing peloton of young belgian jazz innovators. as a result, they won the young jazztalent price at the 2017 gent jazz festival. with their luscious and rigid grooves in minimalistic framing, they cose themselves between schntzl and de beren gieren, likewise minded young beljazzbands that don’t take it so closely with traditions. they play jazz with a rock’n’roll attitude. sdban ultra is very pleased to present a sampler of their debut album ‘and above all’ on a limited 10” vinyl for record store day 2018. this release marks their introduction on sdban ultra, their sophomore album is expected next fall. ‘and above all’ houses both jazz and modern compositions, avant-garde and experimental electronics. steiger takes inspiration from jazz and refers to the traditions but equally pulls those apart, for example in the chaotic miniature bachfag and in the intimate inverse/reverse . with berlin revisited the band clearly chooses electronic instrumentation. it is reminiscent of the electronic jazz of the noughties: bands like triosk, sofa surfers and flanger did not so much work towards jazz but used the genre as a stepping stone to dive into the cosmos. steiger are launching themselves into infinity on this track with a pounding beat, shrill cymbals, overdriven keys and an unwieldy bass.

prolific producer mathis mootz is very well known within the drum/bass and hardcore techno arenas as being one of the innovative pioneers to merge both genres with an unique approach. his contribution to the electronic music community is not limited to his explorations within only the drum and bass and hardcore genres, mathis also has various experimental projects, most noteworthy being his m2 ( squaremeter ) project with releases on mille pleateux, ant-zen and hands productions. the sound of m2 is defined as a combination of micro sound and industrial soundscapes. the panacea is no stranger to the world of techno as some may suspect, his command of the position chrome record label came from his close relationship with force inc. music works which was one of the earliest german record labels to fuel the underground techno/rave scenes in the early 90’s. since position chrome came under his guidance in 1997 it has become one of the most important labels in electronic music due to it’s integrity and an impressive release of quality music for it’s genre. more recently, he has been investigating the techno landscape with david frisch together known as new frames, their latest release on hands productions is essential for those interested in contemporary electronic music of the dark techno/industrial kind. “ above the absolute “ is a 12’’ of mercenary techno produced with expert skill. the opening track “ above the absolute 96 “ is pure sound wave balance with all the components for what is sure to light any dance floor on fire. “ most basic resolution “ is a dark, mood shifting, hard acid techno reminder of what it means to create music for warehouses, pure old school for the hardcore. “ overdrive ee “ continues in a more contemporary direction and demonstrates a mastery of percussive elements in tune with the kind of atmosphere that brings people together in the dark. the final track “ walter “ goes back into the future with a track aimed at the headstrong, an exceptional closing chapter that hits dead centre on the search of the perfect beat. an overall completely impressive work from an artist who has set no limitations for himself.

argentinian dj / producer joaquin ruiz releases on norwegian label ploink this december, featuring four intense techno productions. ploink – a longstanding nightclub in bergen, norway – branched out with a record label in 2014, and now boasts a discography spanning prins thomas, +plattform, skatebÂrd, mental overdrive and label cofounder thomas urv. the labelís twentieth release comes from joaquin ruiz, a twenty-six-year-old from buenos aires, who has previously released on labels like ascetic limited and children of tomorrow whilst continuing to establish himself in the underground techno scene. ruiz opens with the title track ëgalacticí, where haunting melodies sit upon tight, rolling percussion and progress under complex polyrhythms whilst reverb soaked transitions seamlessly tie the track together to set a dark and bewildering tone for the release.

yes, we re back at it again with more eddie amador. after the success of house music and rise, we decided to diversify and go for a double a sided remix package with two distinctly different remixers. so please welcome ardalan and cj jeff to the yoshitoshi family! given ardalans propensity for booty basslines and infectious grooves, psycho x girlfriend seemed like the appropriate choice for the dirtybird affiliate. he flipped the tracked on its head by pumping it full of sub 100 hz frequencies, mental sound effects, and even a pinch of acid. the remix again shows this young gun s talent for creating bona fide bangers that keep the spirit of house alive. greek house don cj jeff took on 6am, the groovy and oft-overlooked 2006 wee hours anthem from amador. his remix bears a massive 808 kick that floors the mix (no pun intended) into overdrive. his simple, catchy melodies capture the classic yoshitoshi vibe beautifully.

launched in 1996, ploink has been a core brand in norwegian techno for two decades now, booking the likes of jeff mills, juan atkins, derrick may, carl cox, radio slave and richie hawtin, as well as launching a record label that champions scandinavian artists. with the likes of prins thomas, mental overdrive, nordenstam, mind over midi and label founder thomas urv appearing thus far, 96-16#3 is the third and final instalment in the 20-year celebratory releases.

thomas urv and miss mostlys norwegian techno imprint ploink drops the second in its trilogy of releases celebrating the brands 20-year anniversary. following on from the first release that featured renowned scandinavian artists such as prins thomas, mental overdrive, urhaug, nordenstam, christian tilt and hutmacher, the labels next outing sees five more members of the local scene make appearances.

the package inaugurates with oslo’s prins thomas editing tromsø legend mental overdrive ‘hellbent’ for a decadent cut featuring sinister drones and dusky atmospherics. urhaug, also known under his house alias tobii, demonstrates tantalising melodies and a chugging bassline in ‘7.3’ before ploink veteran nordenstam takes things into a rhythmic direction in ‘haustfargar’ using shuffling percussion, bouncy toms and spectral synths. christian tilt, another core ploink member, then drops the mesmerising ‘ord’ boasting industrial stabs, a throbbing low-end and cosmic effects. tying it all together, fresh bergen talent hutmacher concludes the release with a cacophony of grooves, samples and echoes in an arcane number named ‘dobbelgänger’.

magic waves brings us the first full-length ep from the enigmatic and secretive jax dax. ‘retribution’ is a dark record that breathes a breath of fresh (rotten) air into techno, re-connecting it with its new beat and rave roots, and presenting the kind of hammers that would surely make the likes of joey beltram or mental overdrive proud while bringing any dancefloor or illegally-occupied warehouse to its knees. watch out for this record, it’s limited and hotter than hell!

some more excellent modern house tracks from the north! boska with his second release on love od, and slowly gets a reputation for himself as a trustworthy provider of quality music on the post bass, nu-funky, what-is-the-new-name-for-house-music-this-week -circuit. did collaborations with studio barnhus, mental overdrive, asma maroof (nguzunguzu) attented the rbma, got picked by several cool festivals. boska is a name to watch for sure!

parisian techno enfant terrible mondkopf makes a rare excursion away from his fast rising in paradisium imprint to deliver an ep for perc trax, a label that clearly shares mondkopfs love for the experimental, the industrial and the distorted. across these three tracks the french producer applies an overdriven, fuzz-heavy aesthetic to symphonic broken beat techno. think ancient methods or perc at their most uncompromising but then expanded in every direction heavier bass, sharper highs and an orchestral edge that is epic without ever coming across as contrived.

for this project the barking dogs rework two tracks by jessie evans, adding their producing skills to her post-punk sax and vocals lines and giving us two old school burning, sweaty killers. the pack is complete with remixes from a couple of hot names on the scene. altz with his enormous, mad remix (something really unique, we where stunned when we first listened to this one) and the deep acid version from rune lindbaek & mental overdrive.

london s idjut boys (dan tyler & conrad mcconnell) and rune lindbaek of oslo are meanderthals. as longtime friends and fans of each other’s music they have discussed the idea of working together in a musical context for years and in 2008, they finally began to make those ideas a reality. throughout the year they traveled back and forth between oslo and london to create their debut album, desire lines. the album is due the 11th of may. but before that, this 12&#8243,,, taster of the andromeda (album track) as well as a idjut boys remix) a meanderthal is a theory by matthew tiessen about a human that is always in the way of others. whether it be the person on the wrong side of the escalator, the person walking slowly, the person bicycling on the pavement, it is essentially the person that stops the flow of urban daily life. on the contrary, lindbaek, tyler and mcconnell s definition does not see this person as a threat, but as a person that is completely in his own world – a slacker, musically on his own. this could also be a good description of lindbaek and the two idjut boys. meanderthals serves mellow balearic disco. a warm and dreamy blend of dub, folk, prog, kraut, psychedelia and 70s west-coast combined to invent an organic, slanted, and proggy feel. recorded live, the album features contributions from good friends, including pete z (dj harvey) on keyboards, des morgan (yamwho?) on drums and percussion, malcolm jospeh (grace jones) on bass, per martinsen (aka mental overdrive) on percussion and raj gupta (laj & quakerman) as sound engineer

only a very few lucky people can call skatebards wonderful debut lp their own. >skateboarding was a crime in 1989< got released on telles electronic offshoot tellektro, home of great norwegian artists like annie or rÖyksopp. the key track on that album was >sgnelkab< which got played and loved to death by djs like sven väth, michael mayer and pascal feos. it instantly became a classic and always remained a secret weapon. the few copies available on discogs cost € 50 and more.... now >sgnelkab< is finally available on a full vinyl side and remastered to great effect! along comes a brand new remix by norwegian techno godfather mental overdrive (r&s). he turned the track into an insanely hot disco rave remix that already got great feedback from the usual suspects. the artwork was accomplished by another scandinavian legend: sähkös very own tommi grönlund!

freerange celebrates its 100th 12inch release with a double vinyl release (this is part 2) including brand new tracks from key artists including jimpster, only freak/spirit catcher and palm skin productions. jimpster starts proceedings with a brand new track entitled got a hold on your soul, an appropriate title for a track that ll draw in the dancefloor with its warm, shuffling beats, lush chords and bleepy fx. palm skin productions lose it beefs things up a bit for an edgy tech house track with plenty of funk. belgiums only freak return with mental overdrive (remixed here by their alter egos spirit catcher). they round things off in suitably driving fashion with a powerful, stripped back monster of a track. spirit catcher have been enjoying huge success with their releases as well as awesome live gigs around the world.
