yoshihiro hanno invites us to take part in a comprehensive storytelling session. he gathers some expressive voices around him who are skillful contributors to the art of narration – just like the japanese producer himself. setting up an array of soundmarks to be followed continuously, with ears wide open, radiq supplies a reduced framework of themes and subjects where guests are welcome to get involved in. they are here to accompany hannos visions, to leave their own impressions, to deliver various ingredients of personal flavour, to provide some very special and unexpected aromas to the story of eastern hemisphere ep.

tamed music had a flying start with their debut release (ft one of our favorite ripperton tracks and topped with a fresh skudge remix!). and no disappointment for the second release either! ripperton comes with another vocal track (vocals by van hai) that is more house orientated as the previous release, but still has that nice moody laidback vibe of the tmq001. almost dubby feel combined with the gentle voice of van hai makes it a standout release. comes with hot remix action of margaret dygas and iron curtis. sweet package ... expected to sell out as rapidly as the the first tamed music!

swiss producer honorée returns to rekids with maree haute ep this january, featuring two intelligently produced deep cuts with a remix from perlon’s margaret dygas. basel-based artist honorées inaugural release marée basse ep appeared on rekids earlier this year and demonstrated a musical understanding acquired from extensive dj experience within switzerland’s club scene. marée haute ep is honorée’s second outing on rekids and includes a remix from renowned minimal dj/producer and panorama bar regular margaret dygas. dorian delivers crisp drum grooves which underpin mesmerising chord progressions, haunting synthesizer motifs and spacey vocals before 208 provides infectious drum rhythms, glitched vocal cuts and hypnotic melodies which sit on top of a rumbling low-end. margaret dygas take on dorian offers a pulsating bass hook and sharp percussion which lays the foundation for dubbed-out synths and ethereal atmospheres to close the release.

new years deal - a1 - luc marianni - six synthetic suites (anno stamm remix) berlin producer anstam’s remix of six synthetic suites is quite a trip. the producer has crafted a dubbed-out version, almost sub aquatic in its sound design, structured around a murky but driving techno beat on which he layers marianni’s sounds. exotic instruments, unusual timbres, daring melodies and even slapped bass: the contrast between these sounds and stamm’s grayscale groove is powerful. a2 vril - synthetic suite giegling artist vril uses samples from marianni’s six synthetic suites released in 1986 to produce this lovely slab of dub techno. carefully crafted, this track is all about soft edges, with a kind of blurry and hazy vibe that permeates it. a sense of motion is conveyed by the sparse but efficient rhythmic section, with chords and melodic elements giving the impression of floating. with much more contrast and complexity than it might seem at first listen, this is beyond your usual dub techno cut. b1 luc marianni - six synthetic suites (margaret dygas remix) also based in berlin, margaret dygas’ own remix of six synthetic suites is a deconstructed affair, built around a half step groove, ready to be used creatively in dj sets. somewhere between an ambient excursion and a more rhythmic jam, the producer uses a sparse palette of hallucinogenic, dizzying sounds with a dash of eerie darkness that gives this version a melancholic, unsettling nature. words by edouard isar.

‘high ends’ is a new label based in paris, following the footsteps of institutions like non standrad productions, backgrounds or perlon. cez, originally from toulouse but now living in the french capital, signs the first ep – a square, gritting electronic piece, brewed from acoustic and modular tones, swaying between enigmatic and spellbinding rythms to minimal style perfectly fitted for dancefloors. inspired by artist such as terrence dixon, margaret dygas or efdemin, cez imposes himself already as a composer with a strong artistic personality.

bergen’s christian tilt returns to norwegian label ploink with his debut album ‘alt skjedde jæla fort’ this september. norwegian christian tilt’s dedication to techno over the last two decades has securely placed him in high ranks to play alongside the likes of the zenker brothers, margaret dygas and ploink label head thomas urv at clubs such as berghain, jaeger and Østre - all in the last year. here though we see christian tilt make a return to ploink for a second time with a five track lp comprised of an intricate cross-section of syncopated rhythms and dubbed-out techno. ‘dos were the days’ slowly builds hi-hats and punchy kick drums, before a deep-synth melody drives the composition forward. up next is the stripped back ‘btl’ that combines otherworldly aesthetics with a steady bass rattle throughout, before the gritty ‘a visit from france’ unleashes a dark low-end, murky synth drones and frantic pad sequences. a relentless 9 minute affair titled ‘i only work late nights’ then swells and pulsates over an unremitting beat, before ‘Øreverk’ rounds off the package with frenzied clangs, muted hits and rhythmic percussion.

in the 1970s the american composer henry flynt started a series of pieces under the title >new american ethnic music<. in so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, country or hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. so far in germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. however, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. incomers have brought new >national anthems< to germany, which means - even the portuguese fado, the african gnawa, the croatian klapa or the vietnamese quan ho are these days at home in germany. with the cultural project >heimatlieder aus deutschland< (native songs from germany) founded by former spex editor mark terkessidis and label manager jochen kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in germany has been collected. thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a >new german ethnic music<. but why remixes? for one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (ghost music, hypnagogic pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the >imaginary national anthems< has created. furthermore the projects instigators were curious how >electronic musicians< would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. to this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. the results are as varied as the music styles and djs involved. some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition. margaret dygas associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. with his remix of the marrabenta of mozambique mark ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with jeri jeri. thomas mahmoud translated gnawa into dub and finaly ulrich schnauss turned the song of the italian chorus of >donni so< into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.
