the 2nd album from french electronic experimantalist serge blenner, originally released in 1981, is back on vinyl via bureau b.

when looking for music to be released on magazine, our guideline has always been energy. the key question remains the same: does the artist have something important to say? does it have a sense of urgency? alex played us these tracks while visiting the magazine studio in cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. this is anything but a conceptual release, alex has not released this kind of music before. a side of alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. a berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at berghain. the ep harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

for the past two years, flee has been working on its first issue entitled benga music – a signature genre from kenya. conceived as an attempt to document a kenyan timeless music genre – benga – this issue is also a visual and audial tribute to the heritage of east african music. approaching this musical genre with a new and innovative perspective, the first release of flee features a vinyl compilation and a printed journal. faithful to the local essence of the genre while transcending unproductive nostalgia, the two objects ensure that the vibrant traditional roots of the benga movement interact with a contemporary approach. to make this initiative possible, we joined forces with celebrated kenyan journalists, ondiso madete and emmanuel mwendwa, and collaborated with renowned international specialists such as douglas paterson. this great team work translated into a well-documented manuscript, with exciting articles, exclusive authentic photos of the era and creative present-day illustrations celebrating the genre. accompanying the journal, the record tells a surprising story, starting with the pioneers of benga (daniel owino misiani, george ramogi and the migori superstars) and concluding with the modern respectful re-interpretations of nik weston, jaakko eino kalevi, and africaine 808, blowing the dust of the original scores.

mattes schwarz started djing in 1982 at age twelve, inspired by, as many west-german kids, the gi-djs of the roller skating rinks around us army bases. while he got heavily involved in cologne’s bmx scene of the 90s, he never really stopped, and during the main years of being known as stecken-mattes and playing there each friday night, he coincidently lived in magazine record’s homebase, north- eastern cologne’s old harbour. one day after stecken’s closure had sent restructuring ripples through the city - i imagine him getting up in the morning and taking a deep breath - he decided to send magazine a few tracks. “i don’t know” is mattes schwarz’ first release.

the totality of the many in one: cologne tape, an on and off gathering band from all over the world, did not call their second album welt without reason. the collective incorporates the nucleus of the label magazine and consists of the artists ada, barnt, jens-uwe beyer, jörg burger, john harten, philipp janzen, mario katz, john stanier and axel willner. all members live scattered between berlin, cologne and hamburg. they meet rarely and abruptly, but each of them always has the feeling that something relevant needs to be done. the ensemble’s name represents a city and the musical recordings that are made in it.their -rst release, -render-, marked the start of the label magazine in 2010 and found the way into dj sets by famed artists like dixon with music, which does not necessarily have the dancefloor in mind. subsequently, little, absolutely sublime pieces of cologne tape appeared in the public.

weve had our eyes on jaures since they formed in 2014. jauress drums are neither techno nor electro but something of their very own, making the duo one of the most interesting young production units in germany right now.

cologne based jens-uwe beyer is releasing this new ep just weeks after his album the emissary was published on kompakts new sub-label pop ambient. while „the emissary was completed by beyer on his home island of fehmarn in the baltic sea, amor dark pink tencel satin suit is very much a collaborative effort.

if the black monolith tycho magnetic anomaly one from stanley kubricks classic 2001 felt like partying, he would be throwing his rocks in the air to the vibes from barnt, even without having arms or legs. it is probably because is this what they were born for? is not the first time the dj, producer and co-founder of magazine (barnt, not the monolith) orchestrates his profound knowledge of true cosmic sound design in the most convincing manner.

one more remixed single for kuniyukis classic >earth beats<. roman flügel remix on a side is simply good. if you like his album on dial, you will love this remix. on b side, our one of most favorite label & producer magazine delivered excellent remix to us. very unique own style and musical. this is rare at the moment.

collaborating in art, music and science since 1999, recently founding the label magazine and the collective cologne tape, this is nevertheless the first time barnt, crato and jens- uwe beyer appear together as one formation, simply called magazine. if you combine their recent releases - barnts stunning debut ep >what is a number, that a man may know it?<, cratos acclaimed and mysterious >30.6.1881<, j-u beyers incredible sound work on his highly respected last album (with jaki liebezeits drums off chaos) and add the cologne tape recordings you can get an idea of the formations cosmos — but you are not quite there ...

after appearing on record for the first time as part of cologne tape (magazine 1), barnt now releases his debut on magazine: the ep what is a number, that a man may know it? is a hypnotic and free-floating haze, heavily influenced by the dance floor. few times before has the psychedelic energy of the 1970s been combined with techno house in such an idiosyncratic way.
