long time scene stalwart darren price is stepping out on brand new label, kilsha music, with a fantastic ep of monster house tracks arriving. opener charm offensive is a fantastic ten-minute trip into loose limbed techno. drums, bass and percussion all wrap and weave around each other and melt your mind in the process. a rasping lead synth eventually becomes the focal point as background chords bring real soul. the brilliantly bristling everybody jack (uw live maschine mix) is a full fat track with busy textured synths, sci-fi effects and old school jack vocals that will really work the dance floor into a lather. its dynamic and ever evolving, with plenty of tense peaks and troughs throughout to keep the floor on its toes. the final vinyl track is this is house music, a deeper cut with warm, warbling bass and a muted acid line spraying about the mix. it slowly builds the pressure in heady fashion and is one to really hypnotise.

n8noface was the vocalist for underground synth-punk legends crimekillz. he is the younger brother of tucson-bred modern boogie rocket man zackey force funk, both now residing in long beach, ca.in 2017, hit+run released n8’s visceral debut album stories of those, as well as demos and demons vol. 1, a ten-track collection of home demos recorded between 2015-2016. on dia de los muertos 2017, noface also unleashed the first single from his forthcoming new album true story, the haunting double a-side lathe cut “idgaf / say goodbye.”
true story, the 14-track lp due this august, reads like a collection of compelling mini-narratives, brief yet honest tales of personal struggles, anti-establishment rants, dead end loves, and real-life tragedies. n8’s minimal wave sound is not about nostalgic lo-fi nor home-recorder formulas, but his own instinctive style that defies categorization and comparisons. the result is a distinct sound of rapid-fire hardcore punk moshing with awkward pop music. standout tracks on the dense 18-minute album include “not like you”, “bad day”, “men who dress well” and “glasgow smile”.

following on from 2017s experimentally-focused ep, nucleus axon finds phantasy regular ghost culture return with an urgent, pristine slice of club euphoria, backed by a standout remix from legowelt. the original version of axon powers ahead with a supremely physical bassline and a ghostly atmosphere that s slathered with atmospheric choral touches, contrasted by punching, powerful drums. each perfectly tuned element weaves a seriously impressive spell of charismatic, contemporary electro. axons original form is then driven underground and transformed into something truly psychedelic at the hands of legendary producer and synth legend, legowelt. coaxing out one of his distinctive acid lines, the hague resident unravels a heady, hazy atmosphere of creeping euphoria amid a spectral, twilight groove.

as well as all the jazz and funk, best italy are also dab hands at digging out italo disco gems that pretty much qualify as proto house jams for their heavy spinning by the seminal chicago djs like ron hardy. this essential transmission from amnesie is a fine case in point, a one hit wonder originally released in 1983 appropriately enough on proto records. now turas makes a welcome return, sounding resplendent in both vocal and instrumental versions, but the real treat for the dedicated diggers is the previously unreleased dub version mixed by legendary dj tony carrasco. thats the jam that will have eclectic spinners getting in a lather.

the second release in no bad days’ sister imprint no bad edits comes from montréal upstart unknown mobile, who first caught our ear with a lovely debut on asl singles club. here, he looks to the 1980s for inspiration, channeling that decade’s confidence and colour with three shimmering reworks. the a-side’s “dream state” matches its namesake, evoking a busy fourth world market scene, with pipes, bells and flutes chiming away in happy harmony.
on the flip, “programmer” is a slab of excitable and effects-slathered fusion funk, as if a computer has sprung to life and begun to dance. the 12” wraps with “valerian slip”, where unknown mobile folds the strands of silk from a free-form windham hill deep cut into a new shape, every bit as smooth as the original but with a nagging groove to underpin it.

the reverend eddie bones is the esteemed american composer, pianist and instrument builder cooper-moore’s collaboration with the songwriter and artist ed pettersen. these two fresh interpretations of gospel songs are both featured in the new norwegian tv thriller pilot “the green jersey” which is directed by Øystein karlsen, the cult director of dag, lilliehammer, and was recently broadcast twice in norway.

next up on the influential artreform records label is the boss himself, aka kyiv-based dj and producer yevgeniy joss. often turning out tracks that sit high in the juno and decks charts, joss has a high-quality sound that ranges from slick tech to deep house and now he proves that once more.
up first is smooth, an infectious groove with lively synths scurrying about and bringing lots of dynamism to the drums. the percussion is crisp and the whole thing feels spaced out and futuristic. it’s busy and brimming with energy and will get any floor on its toes. sharp is a darker number with more menace in the drums. they are rubbery and supple and run through with edgy little synth lines. the track grows wilder as it unfolds and will really work dance floors into a lather.
once again the master joss shows just why he is such a tastemaker in the underground dance scene.

nice price deal !!! patiently waiting for the year of the dragon to commence, nick chacona & anthony mansfield are finally back with a 3 track ep of epically mental proportions! hector works numero uno duo take on a true journey to house music neverland with the peter vs pan ep. almost two and half years in the making, the boys reveal their many facets of cosmic, sleaze disco and acid wonk. one the a side, pan vs peter is a tech funk heavy slow house burner, that shimmers with dubbed out guitar, thumps with low end and grooves the like the funk brothers at opium afterhours. think vacum boogie meets silver connection and you are almost there. starting off the b-side is the eps title track peter vs pan and its right out the gate ncam drunkhouse maddness. a timeless disco house groove with a bassline so big that we were certain that it was gonna blow out the lathe and never actually get cut (thankfully mastering made sure that didnt happen :). and to round things out, the boys get hard on the acid house tip with terrys nightmare, an ode to the grouchiest bartender at peter lugers steakhouse in brooklyn ny.

yore returns with the 3rd release on the yore limited series. 300 limited copies in green transparent vinyl. a beauty musically and for the eye. orlando b. favours the kind of funky and raw-sounding techno that flourished during the late-’90s and early-’00s and so naturally invests his maiden voyage on the yore imprint with the same kind of classic soul that renders that earlier era’s sound so appealing. ” beneath the surface ep ” largely focuses on warm house grooves. “a feeling” dishes out eight minutes of classic deep house that’s also as funky as hell. a subtle latin percussion vibe sneaks in at the beginning but quickly enough the tune rolls out a warm house strut that dominates thereafter, piano sprinkles, lush strings, and a crisp, hi-hat-spun groove give the tune added style and flair, as does the insistence of the titular vocal sample. “esoteric” digs into a steamy, bass-driven house beat that’s both raw and funky, then slathers it with a synth solo that squeals with delight, while “new york tale” smoothens its techno core with warm chords and delicious house swing. “mj12&#8243,,,, is the coolest and most techy cut on this diverse four cut ep. orlando b. sprinkling billowing dub chords and a spoken voice sample over a rock-solid tech-house base that will go straight under your skin, when it hits you on the dancefloor. 300 copies left still. go grab yours before it’s too late

zero cash is back, served in slices! dont say what you think comes at you with two different versions, both hot out the over. the main mix is straight ahead, bangin and dark for the peak hours and tends to make you very nervous. the alternate mix takes you down the dial to minimal/sci fi soundtrack land slathered over an intentionally thicker crust. both mixes are hot and heavy and not for the feint of heart. then in classic zero cash style he lightens stuff up for the b side with more than enough taking you on an electro journey remniscent of 80s cop shows and shoot em up video games. served in slices, get em while they re hot!!!

minimal phreak out strong release by this swedish dream team of clicks n cuts.. after the fantastic gez varley and geoff white releases in the past few months, persistencebit returns strong once more with the swedish minimal techno artists johan skugge and mikael stavöstrand, who work their collaborative gear into a feverish lather on a new trio of high-octane cuts. immaculately constructed and executed with precision, the duos material isnt as skeletal as one might expect-ample noise and commotion appear alongside the tunesgrooves-and, in its acidy moments, pink phantom sometimes sounds like audion, albeit in a slightly less raucous frame of mind

yore returns with a true dream team split ep, pairing yore label head andy vaz with sistrum manager patrice scott. vaz is up first with a beautiful slice of old-school funk and soul within a deep house formula, >back to square one< that has a whole lot more in common with isaac hayes and james brown than with juan atkins or any other techno icon. accompanied by a wah-wah guitar figure and claps, a bullet-proof bass line leads a nine-minute charge thats quickly bolstered by a slinkily swinging drum groove. creamy synth chords and blazing horns intermittently spill over the pulsating mix and then vanish, leaving space for the rhythm to intensify and the track to grow ever more euphoric (and even, towards its close, a bit acidy). a true mission into both funk and house, which again showcases vazs ultimate diversity as an outstanding producer. scott titled his second sistrum release beyond deep and the title might just as easily apply to the b-side >aztecal< where the detroit producer slathers shimmering stabs and congealing streams over a thudding kick drum and flickering percussive detail. while vazs cut draws inspiration from the timeless traditions of decades past, scotts looks towards the future when its gleaming shuttle lifts off in pursuit of distant galaxies.
