the ‘matière obscure ep’ is the first in a two-part series, whereby each composition was made using only recordings from one specific material (metal, glass and wood). the process involved taking everyday objects and making them resonate in every way possible, such as striking them with mallets or using a violin bow, and building up a sample library. ‘weld (metal_01)’ kicks off the release with its syncopated percussion and gritty groove before moving into the cavernous ‘molten (glass_01)’ that’s composed of rolling drums and sinister atmospherics. ‘carve (wood_01)’ is a lot bouncier by comparison, with its fidgeting bassline and murky tones until the menacing ‘cast (glass_02)’ concludes the package with machine inspired effects and a cacophony of stabs.

new york s p. leone is back with the second release on his newly launched e-missions imprint featuring work them records founder spencer parker on remix duties. born and raised in brooklyn, where he discovered the legendary storm rave parties run by frankie bones and adam x, p. leone cut his teeth djing in the lower east side of manhattan before making techno himself. before long the producer dropped his first two releases on work them records, joining a roster spanning radio slave, spencer parker, young male, anetha and physical therapy. e-missions was then launched in early 2017, acting as a platform for co-founders p. leone and caiazzo with more exciting artists soon to be announced. discipline signals is dark and robust from start to finish, with functions of discipline 1 inaugurating the package with resonating kicks, trippy elements and industrial synths. functions of discipline 2 follows a similar aesthetic but heads into a deeper direction with its cavernous atmospherics and glitch inspired effects, making way for laced with its sinister drones and tantalising melodies. spencer parker then remixes laced , concluding matters with rugged drums, energetic hi-hats and a rumbling low-end.

following on from radio slaves vision that landed earlier on in the year, rekids assembles three colossal remixes from rodhad, obscure shape & shdw and johannes heil. rodhads remix leads the package with tantalising synths, filtered effects and stuttering percussion that together assist in generating an impending tension. on the flip, obscure shape & shdw immediately drop cavernous kicks before the originals distinguishable pads brighten up an otherwise dark and sinister aesthetic. tying up the package, johannes heils ethereal rendition echoes throughout providing a deep and mesmerising conclusion.

fumiya tanaka s double-tracker >beautiful town< was fully inspired by its cover artwork: a set of carefully selected old pictures with a layer of masterful signature paintings by romanian artist and fine-arts student bonjour bonsoir. a-sides >abacus avenue< is the ep’s most dense and eerie side. an addictive piece that utterly succeeds in sucking you right in like a vortex would. the locomotive bassline serves its purpose of movement in a strong loopy groove, while the pads and poltergeist y sounds reformat our heads with an inability for space-time tracking. the otherside of this town, >himegami marathon<, is another mysteriously intricate work. its a microcosm of grooves, sinister details and voices locked in a tight groove built on a single bass stab and a flowing, never-ending set of wet claps. a piano kicks in at key points, alongside percussive elements, reminding us that this town is alive.

norwegian producer thomas urv drops the småskansen ep on his own ploink imprint this april. one of norways leading techno prospects, thomas urv has promoted and played at countless events across the country featuring the likes of jeff mills, juan atkins, derrick may, carl cox, richie hawtin, robert hood and kevin saunderson. when not delivering his three deck performances across scandinavia, spain, france, holland, canada and the uk (for fabric and bestival) the norse producer is firmly focused on ploink and his studio activities. *fuktig sol* leads the ep and is a sinister cut led by a morose hook and syncopated rhythm whilst whirring atmospherics add to a looming tension. the dark undertones continue in *stell/less* although steady kicks construct a vibe better suited towards peak time dancefloor madness. tying up the release *sånn isbre* delivers a frenzy of layered sounds that evolve over the course of a lengthy 16 minutes.

after the fittingly excellent 30th release from markatonio, analytic trail waste no time in delivering their next release, this time coming from scottish producer hans bouffmyhre. the paisley based artist has graced perc trax, harthouse and jochim speiths affin with his releases in the past and his production continues to garner support from a wide and revered array of djs. someone im not boldly kicks off the ep with a dark but grooved-out edge which will please fans of his previous work for perc trax wintery, late night and uncompromising techno. bermuda tool follows and pushes further into the darker territories of techno with a lazy pace providing counterpoint to a tapestry of moody effects. self punishment ramps up the energy but keeps the sinister, mechanical vibes of its counterparts while final cut planet deception closes proceedings with a drum focused workout with some killer yet simple snare work.

chris liberator the acid techno legend and workaholic dj teams up with the amazing sterling moss racetrax records for another collaboration to go with their bored of minimal recent release for stay up forever. this release for chris and aaron liberators cluster label kicks like a mule with three very different styled tracks. first up dirt box is a funky builder that grabs you by the neither regions and doesnt let go. a riotous attack after the breakdown will send all doubters packing. x hale has a classic cluster sound, fat bass drum and sinister riff combine to deliver a quick killing poison. finally jammy dodger is a looping techno workout for the heavy mixing dj.
