after years of playing with the moroccan community of brussels, music maker and jazz musician luc mishalle knows every trick of the cross-fertilization of gnawa music, jazz & brass. gnawa is the northern african islamic sufi music with healing vibrations and spiritual lyrics, played by the descendants of african slaves. the album title “beats & pieces” refers to the collaborations with belgian percussionist roel poriau (think of one, antwerp gipsy-ska orkestra), tunisian electronic producer sofyann ben youssef (ammar808, kel assouf) and moroccan-belgian gnawa master maalem driss filali.

one of our humble imprint s closest allies and a longstanding pillar of philadelphia s electronic music community, billy werner has been a constant presence in the booth at parties throughout the northeast corridor since 1998. we debuted his m//r alias in 2014 with the gathering response data 12- . since he s been busy bringing the grit to points beyond the city of brotherly love, putting in work for the likes of detailssound, l.i.e.s. and jackdept. most recently, he turned out a remix of karen gwyer s -why does your father look so nervous- for the rembo remixes on don t be afraid, as well as another for chaperone s -grit neglect- on the aforementioned snapbackbalaclava ep. written, recorded, and mixed over a period of 15 months, among the methods is in no small part a reflection of the affinities and sensibilities billy holds as both selector and producer. referencing a variety of influences from jazz to dub to electro, the album s allure stems from his deft ability to recontextualize those genres disparate aspects into a familiar–yet fiercely idiosyncratic–musical context. the end result is at once wildly fractured and precision-focused as among the methods finds its own seductive rhythm within a matrix of dub echoes and modulated low-end. it s heady ground,to be sure,as well as the most declarative aesthetic statement fromm//r to date. presented without further comment. the music is the message

since his appearance on soccer96s jupiter masterdrive edits ep (alongside danny krivit and glenn astro flips, also on wotnot ) in 2015, and subsequent eps on wotnot, monologues and sgol, danvers has swiftly become a name to pay attention to. as a regular appearance on co-ops selectors assemble, both live and on their recent comp vol. 2, he s established himself as a new and original voice on the broken beat scene. his recent the future is broken mix series highlights his ear for unconventional dance music, something that makes him extremely at home on the wildly creative wotnot (thanks dj mag). the opening two tracks are strongly in the broken beat vein. mason opens with dreamy, rhodes jazz over a bruk beat with rolling snare fills, lulling us into a false sense of security before switching to an offbeat but irresistible squelchy synth groove. similarly, in aye ata the pulsing chord that slowly grows out of the beat suddenly turns the track around with a rhythmic twist, showing the playful broken beat in a whole new light. there s a house touch throughout the ep, none more so than in 1997, where a bouncing kick, soulful claps and a booming sub provide a steadier basis for laid back rhodes chords and dreamy spoken word samples. as a big influence on danvers music, frits wentink is welcomed onto remix duty with open arms. the wolf music regular brings an otherworldly vibe to his take on 1997 , with enchanting but almost disorienting chord swells and spiralling vocal fx punctuated with crisp snare rolls. the ever-busy danvers recently launched 38 east , a studio space and music community, with warren xlnce . warren s remix of 1997 was a surprise gift to his business partner and collaborator, and is a deeper house cut, joe armon jones (brownswood) rhodes jam over the track bringing a distinct peckham flavour. dj support from ig culture, andwot (touching bass), neue grafik & evm128 (co-op) t williams

kingswood drive and accidental return were an early teaser of this new set. displaying their signature analogue sounds and arpeggios, alongside broken beats and soul, you wouldn t be alone in hearing the influences of dam funk, herbie hancock or bugz in the attic coming through on these two. elsewhere more jittery, playful rhythms underpin croydon rooftop café culture. as well as in the calming and ethereal prints on the heath, a subtle tribute to mutual hero prince, who passed away on the unusually prolific day this and two other, currently unreleased, tracks were written and recorded. throughout the ep the duo nod at their london home from the -heath- to kingswood drive and more obviously croydon itself. the sound of south london is threaded throughout this record with pride. even down to the mechanical sunset sound of ep finale thorns, capturing some of the essence of the studio view over london from their high point on the hill in thornton heath. the first ep from albert s favourites co-founders and synth-production duo modified man focused on throwing out heavy editing, recording music with as few processes as possible and grabbing performances as single takes. blending warped cassette recordings that touched upon early jazz-funk/brit-funk influences with the energy of broken beat and experimental electronica, won them support from patrick forge, osunlade, thris tian, yam who? and titeknots to name a few. since that release they premiered new track thorns live on boiler room, going on to deliver a full, three-hour live performance and dj set for the infamous global community. they also provided remixes for dele sosimi, amp fiddler, makadem & behr and hector plimmer, meanwhile, busily preparing a series of four, six-track vinyl eps which will be released over the next 18 months.

nice price deal !!! ryota o.p.p aka ryota arai delivers his debut album pale lux for meda fury. ryota is based in tokyo at the nexus of the japanese house / future disco scene, alongside cohorts such as cos/mes, inoue shirabe, and kza he blends eastern mysticism, jazz spirituality, and cosmic disco with classic 4:4 rhythms. a highly respected dj, promoter and producer the opaque discoid-stomp of his future life ep marked him out as an original oddity but a vital new voice in the now global electronic music community, but with pale lux hes enlarged the scope of his musical canvas to incorporate new fresh textures and atmospheres. as meda fury head honcho nick williams explains: future life was built from some quite dark, abstract demos, some of which ended up being a bit overproduced for his self made debut cd only album. the pale lux lp is a ryotas fully realised eclectic vision, with a mood that is more optimistic and playful - much more reflective of his personality.pale lux indeed has a real narrative flow - dance floor tracks such as the chunky balearic vibes of wood, and banging future techno of bird flying over the rainbow nestle alongside home listening ambience witness the backroom/chill-out vibes of origin, the cute hip hop bounce of soft touch or the delicate trinket box chimes of outro drops. oscillating between light and shade, slow and fast, the influence of japan s history and native instrumentation runs right through the record, his fascination with balearic, disco, deep-house, hip hop, ambient and blunted beats parcelled into a glorious, sweetly considered listening experience.
