the underdogg is the title of dj tre’s debut ep for hyperdub. he had two brilliant tracks featured on our dj rashad tribute compilation next life, but compared to other longterm members of the teklife footwork crew, he hasn’t released much, so we’re very happy to bring him out to play again here. tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the south side of chicago. encouraged by the late dj rashad and his partner dj spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork’s ascent to global popularity. on this ep his sound, for the most part is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. it features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he’s got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons.

presented here are some of the leading figures of chicago’s blues scene of the early 1950s.

finnish legends and everything-but-grey eminences of electronic music, jimi tenor and freestyle man revive their dormant partnership on this four track ep for studio barnhus, jam-packed with classic drum machine funk, congenial synth lines and jimi’s unmistakable lead vocals and flute-playing. the sleepover ep is fuelled by the two maestros’ mutual love for new jersey house music and pyjama parties, as well as musical wisdom gained from numerous collaborations in the past, ranging back to some fabled mid-90s sähkö releases. live show booking now! artwork by robin ekemark.

this album has been many years in the making. around 2005 we were gigging, playing hip hop breaks and supporting acts like krs-one and raekwon. we wrote a lot of our own material, but we never properly recorded it in a studio, we did however make lots of -one mic- recordings onto a mini-disk player. tom kept hold of all of these recordings and in 2011 send copies of everything to the rest of the band. a short list of 30 were chosen to record properly. a basic studio was booked, and recording began, initially it was pretty basic, just drums, bass & keys with guitars overdubbed the following day. with these foundation rhythm tracks tom went away and edited them, creating structure, extra layers and demo mixes. these demo mixes were used to send to mcs. it was decided to go with american mcs as the type of thing we listened to when we wrote a lot of our material was classic 90s hip hop. el da sensei & sadat x were the first to respond to our request, and soon features were flying through ever other week. we actually had enough material for 2 albums, but picked what we wanted to represent our first release and continued to develop the material, including adding session musicians for harps, brass, strings and cuts. we chose 4 tracks to create videos for and got the ball rolling with various video makers. the final year was spent mixing, sequencing and deciding on artwork. the title cinder hill is reference to where the band spent many afternoons practicing at john & joe’s parent’s house, their mum maggie passed away in 2016 and the album is dedicated to her for her endless support and love for the music.

following a live debut at berghain and standout shows at de school and institut fuer zukunft, daniel martin-mccormick returns as relaxer with the fourth installment in the projects eponymous ep series. jamie lee takes over the a-side harrowing screams are framed by strobing chords and a deadly groove. simultaneously euphoric, agonizing and cathartic, jamie lee was written as the climax of relaxers live set and is a prime example of the artists uniquely feral techno. drawing equally on punk confrontations and more haunting emotional explorations, jamie lee is a lacerating and visceral descent. on the b-side, unwind oozes from the speakers, a miasmic cut that builds on the white knuckle tension of jamie lee. a lone synth figure worms its way through pulsating 3d drones, shimmering dissonances and hiccuping drums, rocking out into a quasi catatonic infinity. finally regime change gently floats on the surface of a trash-filled sea, a fading, smog choked reverie.

for its second release, the french record label is delivering 4 house traxx from its founders real j & jus jam (aka jam for real), kerstone and a guest : evolve. as always, the vinyl comes with a strong themed artwork with a hand drawn palm tree on the label.

it does not happen that often any more that unreleased music from 40 years ago surfaces. even more unlikely it is that the songs put on tape are such treasures. the voltags were right at the forefront of the local washington dc new wave/punk scene of the late 1970s. influenced by kraftwerk, gary numan, the clash, and the b-52 s, they have released only one 45rpm single during their existence. but during the time span of not even 18 months, they had recorded enough material for an entire album but the songs remained in the can. this is the story of the voltags, a short-lived band which could have become famous and mentioned in the same breath as the aforementioned music legends of that era if their songs had been released back in the day. dive in and enjoy the sound of the voltags, it is truly special. we here at perfect toy are thrilled to be label to finally release their work and we sincerely hope that they are finally getting the appreciation they so richly deserve

rhode & brown are back on their motherlabel toy tonics! after last years breakbeat - tune st hippolyte and getting remixed by their buddies hodini and glenn astro, their new ep takes their sound further again. from diy-disco to dreamy house, whatever you like to call it.. the tracks have this joyful touch, that makes their sound so special. this time their production way was a little bit different: while spending holidays on the marvellous island of zanzibar they produced the raw versions of this ep. they set up their studio at a beach cabanne. with a monkey becoming their muse. they monkey came over every day to listen to their sounds. they became friends and called the monkey rosie and fed her with mangos. when back in europe the munich boys still were in a balearic mood. so they went to a house deep in the south of france to finish the music. the result were 4 tracks. three for this ep. and one track that they gave to the other munich based label public possession for their recent serie a compilation. which makes totally sense: public possession and toy tonics both have links to gomma records. its all a family thing. where great munich vibes incoming!

the ken boothe masterpiece from 1978 gets the long overdue remastered re-issue. -got to get away- was produced by phil pratt, features additional deejay vocals by jah walton (aka joseph cotton) and has extensive sleeve notes. packaged in the original sleeve design by anthony nero it is now available for the first time on cd and the high collectable lp-vinyl is here in a great 180 gram edition with leaflet including credits and linernotes.

funkadelic have created an enduring legacy, and the power of their impact is visceral in detroit. their records not only played with genre, but possessed a diabolical sense of humour that led to music domination by the late 70s with parliament, funkadelic, parlet, bootsy’s rubber band and the brides of funkenstein all releasing albums the same year for two years in a row. the music itself is beyond stereotype, but equally huge is that they were a black band not allowing themselves to be limited by anyone else’s notions of who they could be, having a massive impact on the next generation of detroit music, detroit techno. but more than just techno, it is a freedom of thinking that extends beyond boxes, so we included all sorts of today s generation of detroit musicians and producers to show the wide range of music that was funkadelic and how these ideas are still contemporary, they endure and inspire.

assemble music brings together four more producers at the forefront of today’s fine minimal/house/electro scene. eklo boss seuil kicks things off with jam, a slowly-unfolding confection of metallic percussion and rolling bass set against a meditative, minor backdrop. his fellow half baked resident robin ordell brings a tipsy-sounding vibe to mobsiw, each element swaying its way around the others in an off-key dance. les points’ barbir adds detroit hats to a no-shits-given breakbeat and suspends it in time, before finally a 4/4 kick comes to put feet back on the ground. finally, traffic founders martyné and jacob draw on more contemporary breaks and electro influences on electronetto, with that laissez-faire swing with which their label has become synonymous.

if psychic health s self-titled debut album took the lessons the la duo learned in the teeming clubs of berlin and melbourne, their latest lp, exclusion, look inward, a document of the duo tunneling down the studio wormhole. as such, exclusion is a remarkably dynamic effort, adeptly jumping between evocative ambience (-jamaica 88,- -ryso-) and equally expansive dance floor fair. examples of the latter, such as the album s obvious centerpiece and titular track, exclusion, document gabriel mounsey and devon steffens’s harnessing modular beast technology for peak techno utility, finding a clear thoroughfare between the soaring strings of derrick may s classic transmat releases and ostgut ton s current ebm-inflected precision. as you d expect from mounsey s background in film composition, exclusion whirls with imagery. it s a los angeles album, but focuses on raw beauty of the city at night—the lights in the distance, and the desolate downtown streets where kickdrums often waft from disused warehouses. while their debut album opened notable doors for the group, landing distribution from hard wax and featuring in the netflix series sense8, exclusion is an altogether masterful turn for psychic health, their complete studio immersion easing the listener into deeply hypnotic states.
