since 2014 the innate blog has been delivering high quality slow journalism, serving up articles that shine a light on artists that have otherwise gone under the radar. four years on, the innate team has decided to launch their own label with the same stated aims, namely to showcase deep electronic music with warmth and soul, produced by unheralded heroes old and new. the labels first release a four-track, multi-artist missive offers a neat summary of what listeners can expect to hear in the months and years ahead. the ep opens with something rather special: a sparkling, life-affirming fusion of b12 style intelligent techno and larry heard-esque flourishes from debutant gilbert, a sound designer and future star from innate s home city of bristol. it s followed on side a by a similarly shimmering chunk of techno futurism from freerotation resident and cubic space collective member mark hand. formidable irish producer lerosa has previously impressed via fine releases for a myriad of high quality underground labels, so it s no surprise that his contribution to innate 001 a mind-altering, otherworldly jack-track entitled shadow is the ep s most robust and intense moment. fittingly, its innate founder owain k who draws the ep to a close. hes long been renowned for creating immersive, ultra deep dancefloor workouts, and pixeled scenery is amongst his most magical moments yet.

robotron is the machine formerly known as xinner. this is its first offering for the esp institute. side as dream resonator is an idiosyncratic network dexterous machine drum/percussion programming, an ebb and flow of floating arpeggios, syncopated counter-melodies and a hail of stabbing stringscontinually diffusing into ethereal vapor all stacked into an (aptly-named) orchestral anthem. side bs ice takes a similar approach with arrangement, each instrument carving out its place in the tracks mechanics for a glorious convergence of patterns, but, where side a proves optimistic, here we sense a more menacing undercurrent, an austerity powerfully articulated through towering kicks and claps so compressed they fill up every dark corner of negative space. indeed, robotron has an innate command for building and calibrating robust systems, but beneath this calculated veil we find the remnant human behavior of xinner. these two songs will whisper loudly but scream quietly.

sam reed aka tokyo prose is a new zealand based drum & bass producer with releases on soul:r, samurai music, hospital records. he now celebrates the release of his sophomore album “wild grace” with his debut on lenzman’s emergent the north quarter label.

more than ten years since he first emerged on skull disco, appleblim presents his debut album. the label he co-founded with shackleton was the first the world heard of his productions, but laurie osborne’s innate relationship with electronic music culture reaches back much further than those groundbreaking early days of dubstep. early days spent soaking up hardcore, jungle, techno and plenty more besides were fundamental foundations from which to spring into the then-unknown realms of sub-low half-step club music. at that time fwd>> and dmz were the church for this ritualistic sound, and appleblim was a regular fixture at both.

in late 2017, thomas gandey and danny mclewin - known from the popular disco-influenced electronic music collective psychemagik - emerged from their studio in bordeaux, france, claiming to have produced an extended musical arrangement, both entitled, and containing the sounds of, the shakuhachi. furthermore, they insisted, for the purposes of this production, and a further album of related arrangements to be released subsequently in conjunction with the successful german record label kompakt, they should be referred to henceforth as ghost vision. shortly thereafter, the audio recordings described by gandey and mclewin came into the possession of noted los angeles degenerate, dj and nymphomaniac citation needed dirty dave, who was quick to relay the hallucinatory qualities of the duo’s productions to fellow dj and trusted hallucinogenic expert paramida, of esteemed german musical imprint love on the rocks. paramida, recognising the innate quality of the sounds presented to her, decided that such recordings warranted immediate release through her audio distribution channel, and not without remixes. quite without thinking of the origins of the instrument which had given the recording its particular sonic distinguishment, and of course, its title, she enlisted the help of two musicians named alex - one from tokyo, and one from kyoto. both alex from tokyo - teaming up with his colleagues isao kumano & kenichi takagi as tokyo black star, known for their prior releases on popular german label innervisions - and his counterpart, alex from kyoto, better known as al kassian, rising tamagotchi on paramidas love on the rocks imprint, and his own label, planet sundae - turned in striking reinterpretations of gandey and mclewin’s composition.

the canadian producer has built an impressive discography in recent years with a stream of quality releases via labels such as clone s royal oak imprint, spring theory, lone s magicwire and most recently his -hope you re well- ep on ninja tune s technicolour imprint. pitchfork were quick to acknowledge his unique production style and innate ability to balance the openness and experimental qualities of the back room and the hooks and sonics of the main room describing previous single is it dry? as -a rarity: peak-time techno that won t rot your brain or insult your intelligence, with appeal from the basement to the big leagues-. following recent excursions channeling the big room sound, he returns with a sleeker, more refined ep. -for this record i pushed myself to keep things more minimal than usual, in a relative sense.- he explains. -focusing on repetition in melody, rhythm and harmony, putting a lot of trust in my initial ideas and letting them play out. it was harder to stop than to add more.- the resulting five tracks span upbeat opener napoletana - -a rough and ready duet between a mfb 522 drum machine and juno 106-, through the swirling improvised piano loops of last day - recorded in an hour just before he packed up his gear at the studio of fellow montreal residents braids and moved it all home, to the bumpy 2-step of less and less .

lvis mejía s newest project, titled anthropology of amnesia is an acousmatic essay addressing our utter necessity to remember in the face of existential oblivion, an innate behaviour of the human race. presented as a 33 minute long continuous composition, anthropology of amnesia unrolls as a series of chapters, the contemplative character of the piece opening a particular frame within the listening experience, where lvis mejía attempts to convey the phenomenon of the collective consciousness through the cultural traces we leave behind. mejía s takes the idea of -one species, one culture, one past- and places it at the center of the concept of the piece. anthropology of amnesia examines a number of interpretations of rituals, orchestrations, chants, synthesis and field recordings - nestled within the piece are recordings of animals, fire, water and a human heart - the sum of these sonic identities incidentally reshaping their roots. the diversity of the sonic sources highlights the comparative study element of mejía s work yet the common thread remains the human experience, recorded stories and the viva voce.

the dynamic duo of second storey and appleblim return to r&s for another slice of their off kilter dance floor alchemy second storey & appleblim bring their detroit machine rhythms and sleek electronic grooves back to r&s for the ‘gimme 6’ ep. since their initial forays in 2015 on the label in the form of a trio of eps and a compilation that introduced the world to their unique strain of cyborg funk, the duo have gone on to refine their sound to ever new creative heights. this new ep is the fruit of that hard work - opener, and title track ‘gimme 6’ sees their production grandiosity hit new highs - swooping pads soon give way to slurping twisted bass and mechanistic hi hats before a collapsing breakdown freakout twists the trad techno blueprint into exciting new shapes. ‘levying rooks’ injects a sense of frenetic levity - serrated bass and scudding percussion, while ‘aperture‘ is drenched in swooning pads and fizzing, flanged out hats underpinned by relentless mutant kicks. too often modern electronic club music is all too content to sit heavily within genre boundaries, and ‘rules - ss&a’s gleeful disregard for categorisation and innate sense of melody, harmony and rhythm make their offerings the perfect antidote to the jaded veteran techno fans as well as the gleeful new jacks

lie of the land debuts on porn wax with an appropriately subterranean take on the acid house formula, amping up the delay feedback and weaving accomplished waves of melody in between the floor-minded components of the music. chapparal is especially deep diving, tapping into a late night mood for backroom beauties and beasts to sway rhythmically to. navigator has sharper edges, but is no less hypnotic and subliminal in its approach. the porn wax stamp is a trusted destination for left of centre tackle for stranger dancefloors, and lie of the land understands their unique vibe innately.

what started out as a simple email exchange between a young, hungry beatmaker and a seasoned player in the worlds of jazz and midwestern indie hip-hop, has resulted in a vibrant record nearly a decade in the making. on one side of let it out sits miles bonny, a long time musical collaborator who spent his youth soaking in powerful musical moments in nyc under the tutelage of his trumpet-slinging father, francis bonny, and later as a teen immersed in new york s busy indie-hip-hop scene. as he grew up miles cemented himself a niche in the midwest, most notably in lawrence, kansas where tireless forays into beatmaking led to the founding of the much-loved innatesounds crew and record label, as well as a series of solo releases and collaborative projects.

shimza, real name ashley raphala, is one of south africas brightest young talents. ascendent, his 4 tracks debut e.p. on cadenza reveals solid production skills and an innate instinct for peak-time bangers. the opening track, congo congo is a dark ride over abysmal tom-tom drums, lively percussions and a gloomy bass lead, ignited dramatically by an ensemble of wide synthetic stabs and chords. in its dub- mix, the drums and the percussion become lighter without diminishing its dynamic tension. the overall weight of the leads and the stabs is reduced, leaving more space to its intense piano and string chords and swinging sub bass. shimza - secret melodies starts with an obscure bass line, but the intense twist of fractioned rolls and arpeggios bring an ascending piano progression that quickly blooms into an uplifting symphony. selector is a deeper cut that keeps the gaze on the dancefloor: the incessant hand clapping and a cloud of low frequencies bumps unexpectedly drag its hypnotic harmonies into a breath-taking drop.

john heckle last released an album on tabernacle three years ago, but he s been far from quiet since then with his head front panel project diverting his attention towards blistering hard techno. tone to voice then represents a return to more melodic pastures with a more diverse selection of tempos and moods to choose from, but still heckle s innate gift for expressive, dynamic machine music shines through. -sonic spectrometer- is a joyous slice of techno-jazz, while -potential life- whips up stunning cascading synth lines and pattering hats. at times, there s no need for a kick, and with ample ambient excursions woven into the mix this stands as one of heckle s most accomplished releases yet.

an innate facet of the human condition is the very personal way we choose to process our own fatality. faced with dealing with the feelings of anxiety, death and fear after nearly drowning whilst diving in the south atlantic in his youth, ricardo donoso chose to channel them into his creative process. the result was scuba death, a project that was fully realised on donoso’s widely acclaimed 2014 further debut, nitrogen narcosis. after spending time devoted to establishing his kathexis label as well as delivering a trilogy of albums under his given name for the denovali label, donoso returns to further with a second scuba death offering, the worm at the core.

acid pauli is a name synonymous with certain aesthetic towards electronic music culture - both a part of the unhooked generation of that grew up experiencing his revelatory sets at places like bar 25 and fusion, and yet deeply rooted in musicality and adventurousness. bld, the second full album from martin gretschmann, (aka acid pauli), builds on his already impressive back catalogue which spans back to 2005, and includes a debut album released on nicolas jaar’s clown and sunset. over the course of the eight tracks here, gretschmann explores some of the many facets that have made him one of the most trusted artists in his field. released on his own (and nico stojan’s) label ouïe - the album is the perfect expression of the imprint’s commitment to diverse, exciting sounds, freed of the conventions of traditional club music. the album covers a number of moods and emotions, from dystopian carnivalesque vibes to moments of high intensity, through to deep melancholia and synth laden ambience. gretschmann’s well documented love of the sampler shines throughout - tracks are textured and colored with different hues from his extensive sound palette, whether it’s a part of his more psychedelic moments, or concentrated on his innate knowledge of dancefloor dynamics. as such bld sits together as a complete piece of music - to be relished just as much by blissed out home listeners as the left-field dancers.

five years deep into the game, all nine lives fully intact: utrechtian feral feline larry de kat prowls his way onto pets. and we really dont need to tell you how purrrrfectly apt this debut union is. fresh from launching his own katnip imprint (and putting the final touches on a hush-hush disco edit series), pets have managed to prise four of his finest, broadest creations from his creative claws. each one floorbound, each one backing up the hype hes enjoyed from the likes of axel boman, mark e and laurent garnier, each one making us feel like cats who got the creamiest of creams. i know you can hear me’ takes the lead on a more direct tip that you might expect from de kat. big pumps wrapped in a fine vibe balance of detroit and parisian house textures, but done with larrys signature dubby, jacking style, its the perfect paws-sitive statement of intent. slinking deeper into the ep, naakte groove lives up to its nude name with a lean-but-warm bass riff that purrs with finesse around a straight-up strutting drum arrangement. so much fun in such a tight, detailed groove, youll want this on loop forever.amlou stalks up behind with dusty, thumping charm. rolling and scratching like it was 20 years younger, theres an innate physicality in the drums that snaps you out when the big disco hook rides in from nowhere. finally we hit she doesnt. the dubbiest groove of the set, all eyes are on that bulbous sub, rippling synths and precision tuned snare shot. hypnotic, heavy, unhurried and heads down. these sounds are fur real. like all the best stray cats, expect larry to return to pets as and when he pleases.

the debut release for the label is inspired from lingering between different realities. the original cut of bardo starts the release perfectly with a groovy bass and delayed atmospheric sounds, on point for self inner exploration. ed herbst &#769,s version brings some of his innate talent as a beatmaker. forward moving bass, crisp percussions and expansive sounds, make it perfect for the the late hours. on the flip side, han delivers a tool with layered percussions that are accompanied by futuristic sounds creating a solid groove that will keep you locked in. nick beringer delivers a superb remix of tamed, raw elements and tripped out sounds all along the track make this a dance floor bomb.

hotflush are proud to introduce an exciting young artist, pyur, along with her singular debut lp epoch sinus. despite her relative newness, pyur meets the world with fully formed and unique signatures in both visual and sonic work, revealing a deep artistry that transcends medium. growing up in munich, in and amongst the same fecund scene that spawned artists like the zenker brothers and skee mask, pyur cut her teeth from a young age as a guitarist and singer before becoming spellbound by the electronic world’s endless scope for sound design. endowed with innately strong synaesthesia and reared in a shamanic household, she tells how music “played the biggest role in my growth. it alone had the purpose to help me dissolve boundaries, discover the beauty of life’s mechanisms, create freely. it talked. soon i felt like the music was making me, not the other way round.” epoch sinus is a seamless and heartfelt whole, a life-like being unto itself, describing the disintegration of barriers between the self and the all. here pyur offers an intimate and personal statement, combining knowledge of universal harmony with electronic music. she states: “i m mainly influenced by my inner visions and nature itself, yet also a lot from club culture, which is undoubtedly an important space of connection and freedom for so many people”. the record dances playfully between supposedly incompatible qualities: moments of brutality turn to softness, new life embraces decomposition, while explosive rhythmic and melodic structures are tempered with gentle and subtle percussion.

if anything, stojche’s take on detroit inspired techno rarely requires your permission for engagement. the fifth installment of his own label, tangible assets, is no different. this singular producer always manages to conjure up otherworldly atmospheres that resonate from head to feet. with that said, we could spend the next three paragraphs throwing around adjectives and splashing colorful words all over this press release regarding his sound, the aesthetic within each track in this release, and we could even volunteer a side helping of words that somehow make sense of this young producers studio ability. one thing however is for certain. tang005’s true charm lies in its ability to capture an honesty and sincerity that’s as captivating as it is transcendent. there’s a clinical yet organic approach that stojche adopts time and time again in formulating his tangible asset releases, and if anything, tang005 should provide further evidence of his depth, maturity and innate ability to create enchantment. this record is wrapped in captivating moments born from flourishing stabs, twilight synths, rolling charges of calculated manic rhythms and subatomic motions living within a range of intricately programmed beats. add to that a host of cinematic sweeps that develop into harmonic clouds of melancholy and you’re one step closer to the true romance etched within the grooves of this record. once again, stojche has created an ep that catalyses imagination. a series of intense voyages with thoughtfully considered moments and movements that have been executed by a man well in tune with his craft.

d3 elements continues to mine the fertile soil of midwest inspired house, techno and electro with this fantastic new album from michael dykehouse (sometimes found turning out experimental fare on planet mu and ghostly). here the grooves are immediate and engaging across nine tracks, from the bubbly -meltdown morning- to the spooked-out -clock division-, touching on a range of styles all bound together by a commitment to classic drum machine beats and synthesiser tones. this is far from a throwback record though, instead celebrating dykehouse s innate musicality through all manner of tempos and moods and coming out as a well-rounded long player in the process.
