the enigmatic label from berlin, schakal recordings is back with its fifth release and young dj lorenz lepus is next in line. the lepus project has gone through many guises, finally lorenz settled on making music as a solo artist under the lorenz lepus alias in 2014. while still studying at school lorenz became a resident at chalet’s tuesday sound department parties, cutting his teeth in the cities clubs he has played in venues including hoppetosse, sisyphos, arena and many more. this dedication to his music was not without some confusion, being aware of the melan- cholic minimal tendencies of his productions he has always been loathe to pin himself to a particular genre.what with the success of his career so far.. perhaps this isn t a bad thing. ‘feral child’ is made up of two original tracks and two remixes.the title track s melody swells until it breaks down into a pulsing and rolling rhythm. ‘lost’ is more immediate in its dance-floor compatibly, maintaining the rolling style lorenz imbues his take on deep house with an emotional poignancy rarely heard. floyd lavine steps up for the first remix on the ep, floyd is a resident at the legendary rise par- ties at watergate, with one foot in berlin and the other in his native cape town floyd delivers a beauti- fully loopy and oddball twist on ‘feral child’ adding crunching static sounds. providing a harder take on ‘feral child’, italies vii circle change the rolling melody into a slow techno heater.

one of the leading lights of a growing collection of electronic pioneers from russia, muscovite anton zap steps up with an album of gloriously deep, beautifully produced music for apollo records. with a background in sound engineering, a back catalogue stretching back to 2007 and a djing career that goes back a decade further, anton zaps music is imbued with a serious knowledge and understanding of electronic music - from ambient movements to the late night thump of deep house proper, here is a producer who is as comfortable making out-there space soundscapes as he is detroit-influenced dance-floor weapons.

it s not often that you get to see alan oldham stepping out under his own name. the legendary detroit artist is more commonly spotted as dj t-1000 (or designing iconic artwork for techno labels) but this time around he s sharing some more house-minded delights for finale sessions. -don t take me- is a haunting, mystical slice of deep house that fits into the finale narrative perfectly, while -wild- too offers up a distinctive approach that manages to be both refined and yet imbued with that detroit roughness. -breathe- may well be the best jam on the record, dealing in subtle threads of melody that conjure up the perfect dubby 4/4 confection.

dutch producer casper von banniseht sidles over to bristol stable boogie cafe to present a three-track 12- of impeccable dusty house grooves imbued with that detroit-esque feeling that oozes out of a moodymann or theo parrish record. -bossa- revels in choppy broken beats and plenty of choice samples in a most loose and soulful of concoctions, while -lazy- cools down to a simmer with subtle disco licks making the most immersive of deep house jams. -lone- meanwhile plies a more chipper trade with its hooky chord stabs, but still the vibe remains smooth and laid back, just how the boogie cafe crew seem to like it.

after a few digital releases, lunar convoy delivers a masterfully executed debut ep to inaugurate newcomer belgian imprint norite’s vinyl series. counting northern electronics, hypnus records, semantica and prologue among his main influences, lunar convoy’s first effort is utterly coherent while not failing to evoke a plurality of emotions. imbued with sacred atmospheres, infiltrated with mysticism, ritualistic melodies and aesthetically charged rhythms, outer rim territories is a testimony of his love for deeper realms. on the a side, seswenna’s trancey lead synth and pumping bass opens the ep with an excursion towards distant planets. ryloth ventures into darker fields, scattered with whirring and saturated analog complains and haunted by ancient voices. on the flip side, eriadu sets a more mystical pace with syncopated kicks and floating eerie pad, to embark on a parallel dimension. allen’s take on ryloth is symptomatic of the us-based producer, speeding things up and offering a stripped down version filled with devastating hi-hats and firing toms to end this solid 4-tracker with the hypnotic-yet-effective sound that got him signed on attic music, m_rec ltd, polegroup or more recently granulart recordings. with such a captivating release, lunar convoy has set a high bar for the upcoming releases and left us under his sway.

2016 repress , having provided a remix for the label back in 2010 ethyl & flori now release their first full ep for the label, the last ninja kicks things off with an unmistakable old school tech-house feel which to us at fof recalled the classic architecture dj mix by terry francis with its punchy kick, sharp percussion and imbued uplifting warmth. fornjot by flori on the flip is a different proposition, although still deeply entrenched in a throwback to yesterdays production stylings, this is a much more techno orientated groove with the tracks repeated metallic bass riff anchoring the track in a gloriously hypnotic yet fresh way.

rome native marco piovesan is a dj’s producer. his driving style, pristine sound quality and nuanced tones makes his techno of the variety that draws bodies to the dance floor, and keeps them there. 2013 was his breakout year which saw releases land on gynoid audio, m_rec ltd.. that same year piovesan launched his own enterprise, h.omevvork recordings, as a haven for richly emotive techno music imbued in ‘90s spirit. to date it’s three ep’s have been remixed by luminaries such as giorgio gigli, daub and m_rec ltd’s sadly departed chief max_m. piovesan joined the key roster soon after as part of a split ep with another (then) up-and-comer, hector oaks. his two works, “black paranoid 7” and “black paranoid 10”, were clean, steely dj fodder underscored with a dark energy that made both of them potent club weapons. now piovesan returns with four cuts of surging, remorseless marching material design to tear up strobe-lit basements and big room halls alike. for djs who take no prisoners, who enjoy calling on the old techno ghosts too.

brack, the new imprint from uk-born berlin-based producer bnjmn, is back in quick succession with another strong transmission from the label boss. after plunging into dirtier, darker sonic waters on the pitchfork-tipped brack001, chromed continues the descent. while the propulsive rhythms and skilfully stacked samples remain intact, these 4 tracks are imbued with subtler elements that become more apparent with repeated listens. drums don’t just bang, they scrape, stab and shudder, and the typically mesmeric synth-lines are swathed in analogue hiss and seething low-end. idiosyncratic aural details have always been a specialty of the young producer, but here they rise to the fore. the rapidly flourishing sound world that is brack comes more into focus, and it appears it is even more intricate and musically rich than on first glance.

swedish underground powerhouses mr tophat & art alfie return to bass culture with their second ep for the label after the phenomenal success of their first outing, which picked up strong support from across the scene, particularly from ricardo villalobos. this time around, they drop two hefty slabs of disco-tinged house imbued with their own distinct flavour throughout. ‘dub the rub’ pumps along with an infectious groove, tough percussion powers along with a rolling bassline. watch out for the vocal-led breakdown midway through, killer! on the flip, ‘fnatt’ works around a more traditional melodic house motif, tender and bright with a lush b-line and captivating vocals made to move your body and soul.

christian löffler has already released two critically acclaimed albums, forest in 2012 and young alaska in 2014. both of which received major recognition and support. his next ep york, forthcoming on 2020vision narrowly avoided disaster after the laptop containing the demos was lost. after much perseverance, copies of the tracks were found and the ep came together. perhaps it was this fated start to york that imbues it with such a euphoric and stunning poignancy. either way, löffler has proved himself to be a compelling producer and after years of creating and releasing music he has become recognised as one of the best in the business. york complies with the consistency of his deep and emotive approach to production, making&#8232,,,,,,him synonymous with both a lightness of touch and a melancholia rarely heard in other producers.

its winter in detroit and fit siegel has given us * carmine*, a moody techno classic perfect for the lonely season. subtle, low-key and thumping, the title track revolves around a bittersweet piano lead, elegiac 303 and blade runner string swells. its a high-tech driving song in the tradition of model 500s low-key classic * pick up the flow* and fit sounds more assured than ever. * first found* is mills-ian jigsaw puzzle techno imbued with breathy and addictive humanity. stacatto, free-jazz informed piano solos lock into ping-pong synths -- eventually, a female vocal emerges over a bed of arpeggiated bass. loose yet robotic, * first found* is first-rate detroit techno mysticism. the record as a whole is a worthy entry into the motor citys storied canon from a leader of the new school.

achterbahn d amours machinefunk opus, odd movements gets reworked with 4 sonically diverse remixes. detroit don marcellus pittman kicks things off with a massive, unsettling flip of holy roman empire. the italian producer chevel is up next with a virtuosic take on the lps title track. his cubist, artfully restrained version ends with over a minute of icy techno snap. convextion, as well, chooses to hold back for maximum impact, infusing the moody passagen with subdued electro bounce. finally, sw. imbues the duos konigstr with dubbed-out breakbeat pressure, occasionally allowing the original acid line to seep through a skittering rave rhythm.

providing a state-of-the-art rejuvenation of 90s ambient house, the heart ep (the first in a 2-part set of records) serves as a fluent example of the lighter side of greg scrases previously little-known, but masterfully honed craft – here paying homage to the past greats of electronica, drawing together different threads of influence and applying them to his own colourful sonic palette. the white 12 inch contains 3 exquisite original tracks that bubble and grow with a vibrant analogue charm, imbued with scrases house-ier tendencies and melodic capabilities - backed-up by a very special remix of *flyover* from like-minded acid aficionado dave monolith (under the moniker mnlth).

having started the year in strong fashion, fighting *the clone wars* on his own rekids imprint in january before following that with the rødhåd-remixed *repeat myself* on work them, matt edwards aka radio slave continues his 2014 ascension with his nonplus+ debut *dont stop no sleep*. another pared-down techno workout, *dont stop no sleep* is a classic radio slave roller imbued with the tougher edge of his earlier techno productions such as grindhouse and screaming hands, retaining the hallmarks of his most influential work whilst updating it with his now trademark energetic house style.

hand stamped and numbered, strictly limited to 320 copies. osiris music uks thirty seventh release *open water versions* sees the label taking an innovative, almost open-source approach to what could be a more conventional remix project, with four artists contributing their own unique perspectives to one anonymous track. the eps opening salvo comes courtesy of killawatt, who brings a dense combination of driving force and technical intricacy whilst ipman imbues his version with urgent percussion and sense of cavernous tension. the second half of the release sees the debut of osiris music label owner simon shreeves mønic project, the pummelling, cinematic sounds of which providing apt counterpoint to the staggered, churning techno of metrists version which rounds up the ep. early support from laurent garnier, eomac, bas mooy and paul mac.

fold returns following a pair of impressive 2013 releases for electric minds and george fitzgeralds manmakemusic, with the london producer bringing his house/techno/uk bass hybrid sound to his second electric minds ep, the grasshopper lies heavy. a1, gully rattles along at a brisk 135 bpm, a raw yet versatile dj tool imbued with a sense of impending dance&#64258,,,,,,,oor mischief. the a2 dun kno then drops the pace down while pursuing a subtler, more melodic arc. on the &#64258,,,,,,,ip, b1 roy batty carries with it its namesakes sense of menace as its escalating synth stabs drive the track onwards. ep closer harlyns dub strips things down for the deepest track of the 12 inch, with folds love for dubbier elements of techno brought to the fore.
