i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. the barcelona based record store and label run by dj bruce lee is very proud to release the first work from tr, a well known dj in the madrid underground scene. tr was responsible for one of the remixes from the first release on the label. that remix was techno, but his tastes embrace many different styles as we can see now. multi ep is the second release on rhythm control barcelona where tr, colaborates with causmin lizou on the keyboard for the b side tracks. the a side contains 2 90s infuenced breaks and electro tracks titled bassaur and eah (part 1.2 & 3). the b side contains 2 detroit influenced house tracks, fingers de pollo and gitroit highlights. a producer worth following without a doubt!

elevate melodies are back with four toe-tapping, finger-snapping, dancefloor slaying heaters, all on wax. side 1 takes off with the griffes’ remix of jay airness’ “she staying”, all sumptuous keys, sun dappled strings and peak-time beats propelling the track ever forward. venice beach then takes on sly moore’s seismic “muoosic”, dropping the tempo and creating a super low-slung slab of electro funk, one for the 100bpm crew. on the b side, lord funk takes on “black les grues de nantes” from victorius, turning it into a jazzy workout with slap-bass, chopped up vocals and dusty vinyl crackles giving it a classy 90s feel. and rounding out the selection is new york dj and producer p-sol who applies his midtempo skills to “law and theory” from label boss jay airness, creating an atmospheric groove with some real funk and jazz flourishes. limited to 500 copies.

dj-kicks start 2018 in fine style with another vital entry into their long running series. the latest comes from swiss dj and producer deetron on march 3rd 2018, and features an exclusive solo track as well as exclusive collaborations with steve spacek, jinadu and jamie lidell. as one of the other most famous musical exports from his swiss homeland, he has pretty much done it all from fabric and balance mix cds to running his own label, from essential albums like twisted and music over matter on music man records to club focussed 12Ós on will saulÕs aus music and french label circus company. after 20 years in the game, he is still in demand at key clubs around the world, and is sufficiently respected as to be able to call on big names like seth troxler, cooly g and ben westbeech for collaborations.

frank is the latest release from dolfin records, a texas indie label with a prominent underground roster that includes rapper lord byron, producer ben hixon, r&b singer jon bap, and former stanley clarke drummer mike mitchell. liv.e is one of the newer artists on the label, having previously collaborated with hixon through a series of dj parties in dallas (“new math mondays”). hixon and bap have significant marks on this project, providing production, mixing, and background vocals. the beats they lend are often heavy on the drums, with short, hazy riffs that resemble dilla-style syncopated loops. frank opens with a short hiss, launching into a jittery pattern of cymbals and drums, stinging bass slaps, and bouncy guitar riffs. you can almost see the tape reels rolling in front of you as the instrumental loops play themselves out with occasional flutters and skips. a chorus of voices enter with harmonies out of the george clinton songbook, blending in behind the slow, finger-snapping beat. it sounds more like a lost, dusty funk recording from the ’70s than an r&b song made in 2017. -nitish pahwa (passion of the weiss)

lovefingers heard the atmospherian years ago on milk beach settlers, a promo-only mix cd comprised solely of australian artists, mixed and released by seminal melbourne dj duo and good friends hey convict!
