simon baker & jamie jones have been long time dj s in england s underground electronic music scene, who have within the last couple of years emerged as respected producers and have seen their works signed to labels such as crosstown rebels, 20/20 vision, freak ‘n’ chic, poker flat, cocoon, get physical and connaisseur just to name a few. kaskazi is their first collaborative effort and proves their individual strengths are even more formidable when unified in the studio. the three versions of kaskazi all invoke a different mood and style, but still retain that jubilant flavor of the original that caught the ears of m.a.n.d.y. and dj t. early in the summer. praise has come from all corners of the dj spectrum, as the combination of a galloping funk fused bass line, with the infectious vocals and clever effects have erupted many club dance floors into a frenzy.

korpus 9 records kicks off with a brand new ep from dubspeeka, featuring four tracks of high impact and atmospheric techno. korpus 9 records is a brand new techno label from russia managed by kwazalski. the main aim of the label is to release fresh and innovative material, not only digitally, but also on vinyl. all the imagery and influences of the label come from an abandoned research station that is deep underwater, where unusual events are happening around it on a constant basis. charged with the first release is shadowy bristolian producer dubspeeka, who has put out his music on drumcode, senso sounds and get physical, runs skeleton recordings and has a fierce techno sound. the opener here is garrison, a driving number with heavy drums and a warm but edgy mood. garrison 2 is more spaced out, with celestial pads baring a feeling of suspense above the firmly rooted drums. garrison 3 then has lumpy drums that bob up and down, as acid lines, water sounds and metallic hits all add atmosphere to the cavernous groove. last of all, garrison 4 is an eerie dub techno track with real drive but also plenty of thoughtful emotions. it closes out a brilliant first ep on this exciting new label.

silicone soul welcome the return of old friend justin robertson as he brings his much loved deadstock 33s project back to darkroom dubs. last spotted on the label only a matter of weeks ago with infinite interchange on the darkroom dubs presents summer love collection, here he builds on the momentum with two more singular missions deep into the timeless analogue abyss. whats more, they come covered with a print of one of justins very own hand-drawn pieces. dr. spectro on the frontier marks the start of this new deadstock trip. celebrating the lesser spotted dc super villain who could control people’s emotions with a brazen line or two of sinewy acid what starts off dark and gnarly gradually unfolds into a much more emotional narrative. watch out for the harmonic riff that rekindles feels of raving fields and a salvo of chords towards the climax that genuinely will control your emotions. the music is madness (to those who cannot hear it), meanwhile, is more than just a poetic title. already a summer anthem at a love from outer space, it s a roomy, cosmic affair that’s laced with layers of trippy textures and chugs at a cool 120. its one of justin’s classic signature smouldering sessions, what ostensibly seems forlorn and introspective is actually coded with deep hope and positivity. youd be mad not to hear it. youd be mad not to stay tuned too. for the first time in darkroom dubs history, this release and all this years vinyl dispatches will be released digitally as part of an end of year compilation, tales from underground vol. 1 and will also feature an exclusive silicone soul remix of rigopolar & cannibal inks thousand years before. and to round the year off? the long-awaited new single from silicone soul themselves.

my favorite robots next release is a very special remix by dj tennis. it initially comes as a 10 white vinyl and will then be available digitally in autumn. mfrs ‘barricade was first released on dj tenniss life and death label back in 2012. it was a huge house track that resonates to this day, so it makes sense the taste- making italian steps up to remix it. he is someone with a cultured take on brooding house and techno, as evidenced by the music he a&rs for his label as well as things like his own standout dj-kicks mix from last year. his new remix is a masterfully melancholic one that starts with a delicate ambient synth line hanging in mid air. breathy vocals eventually arrive to send shivers down the spine and finally, deep, rolling, mid tempo kicks bring a groove that carries you away into a reverie. its made all the more mournful and poignant thanks to some broad synth chords and swirling pads later on and is sure to provide a real centre point of any seriously emotional set. this is a stunning and absorbing single and another high point for my favorite robot records.

after breaking out of our holding facility in early 2017, we tracked the humanoid alien lifeform known as darling to a deep bunker in amsterdam. while we were unable to gain entry tio the inner chamber, an operative successfully placed an eavesdropping device close by. while monitoring the lifeform s movements, we were able to record eight musical compositions of varying lengths that it had created using a range of analogue and digital electronic instruments. we have called this collection tulipa moves. you will notice that the tracks utilise a variety of rhythmic patterns, explore unearthly but attractiuve sounds and are capable of stirring strong emotions in human listeners. we direct your attention towards the lilting, softly spun melancholia of composition 03 (codename so did we) the fluid, beat-free bliss of composition 05 (codename the m song), and the up-tempo positivity of composition 07 (codename kiss the glass), whose chiming, intertwined melodies and snappy rhythmic energy reminded us of so-called intelligent dance music. we were astonished by the quality and intricacy of these alien creations and those we have not described in detail. it strengthens our belief that darling is a lifeform with higher intelligence and otherworldly musical ability

lybes dimem is a project by visual artist and musician lukas rehm. with elaborate beat structures and the use of error, the music plays with cognitive phenomena and abstraction while maintaining an emotional refuge. lybes dimem is presented in formats ranging from spatial sound experiences to synesthetic shows complementing the auditive layers with visualizations of realtime data, computer graphics and moving image. lukas rehms installative art, and compositions have been internationally presented and awarded with multiple emerging arts prices. syncleft chronem is the first album released by lybes dimem in both digital and vinyl for-mat and accompanied by a moving image artwork. the title reflects the projects interest in the potential of difference, cognitive frictions and exertion: sync variability in the processing of auditive and visual signals, syncleft the synaptic cleft, which is a crucial empty spa- ce in biological neural networks, chronem the chroneme as a theoretical unit to measure the time of an articulated sound. mathematically clean sounds juxtapose patterns and transitions familiar from the realm of organic acoustics. multi-layered noise textures ex- plore the simulated space. a tem- porary continuity is provided by percussive and melodic elements, right until the next escalation, eventually awaiting a concluding resolution. the visual language explores different phenomena and techniques of cognition inspired by the rhetorics of big science (computer graphics, discontinuity of material, pop cultural references).

with its third release, hundert is diving further into the technological maelstrom that has slowly transformed our perception of reality and what this thing called life is. dj oks private messages poses some crucial questions about how we find, form and maintain relationships in our day in age. fittingly, its sound was forged seemingly everywhere and nowhere at once: classic new york-leaning deep house vibes meet uk-inspired gunshot sounds and the frantic grooves of contemporary outernational club music, balearic feels converge with the slick sound palette of our digital environments. private messages is as immersive as an ever-refreshing newsfeed, but just as emotional and real as the next person checking in on you via imessage. dj ja and dj neins third effort can be as much enjoyed in the sweat-drenched physicality of a crammed club as it may serve as the perfect soundtrack for when you are home alone, connected with the entire world via a dimly-lit interface. these four tracks will touch your heart like a spectre attack would infiltrate the device you are using right now. and you know that it is unpatchable. all hardware problems are.

in linguistic or electronic logic, the xor gate designates a device, digital or grammatical, which outputs a value only when two di ering inputs are fed into it. this can be summed up with the formula “one or the other but not neither, nor both.” a conic section is a shape created as a plane intersects a cone. this can result in di erent figures such as a circle, an ellipse, a parabola or a hyperbola. conic sections is here composed of eight themes, or shapes, over which waveform and synthesis entirely merge with human emotions. the line is blurred. these eight themes are intertwined, forming one long musical string. the line is forever blurred. conic sections was commissioned by artcenter south florida in miami, for the an image exhibit

after a track, a tape and an ep released on acid waxa, opal tapes and dream ticket, respectively, binary digit logically sees his first lp, 38000 summer hits, released on stochastic releases.
this new album comprises 6 tracks of edm: emotional dance music. they were made and recorded during the hot summers of 2016 and 2017. everything you need then is freshness and coolness and this is exactly what they are giving. they combine the overall positivity of the summer and the melancholy caused by the insistence of the heat, of the light, of the endless nights. they were played directly from the machine to a 1/4’’ tape, which explains their very natural and direct development. 303-like bass, gnarly hi-hats, heavy kicks and digital licks are still to be expected here.

ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco) return to not an animal to further indulge in the organic house territories previously mined for the previous releases. the duo have an uncanny nack for deftly balancing the rockier end of disco with the authenticity of early house, and never more so than on -secret place. the original bounces and struts in a pleasingly groove laden hypnotic fashion, while the dub version turns down the guitars and turns up the synthesisers for a more heads-down dance floor excursion. on remix detail kuniyuki takahashi makes his 1st appearance on the label. on the vinyl you ll find an interpretation which can be best be described as pitched-down balearic-techno, which clicks, clacks and folds upon itself, drowning in waves of reverbed drama-drums at a deceptively low tempo. kuniyuki also provides a second remix as a digital exclusive, mildly pulling back on the pomp of the vinyl version, but replacing it with a spacious pathos, complete with backwards guitars that reminiscent of an electronic within without you era beatles. angaphora make their naar debut with their own wildly stirring remix of the lead track, which evokes the golden era of 80s melodic pop music to bewildering success, laden with digitised emotion, singing ebow guitar, and not a kick drum in site.

venera is a deep emotional title adding further shelflife to the growing arctic music catalogue. searing guitars, keys and chime moods escalate over sharp breaks alaska style. arctic foundations s criterion makes a welcome return on the flipside featuring kiyomi grounds on vocals. a small twist alongside the original intense amen breaks with a longer 9 minute digital excursion.

legendary los hermanos member santiago salazar’s album ‘aspirations for young xol’ is given a vinyl release courtesy of rekids. a heartfelt dedication to his son isaias, ‘aspirations for young xol’ takes us through the life of a pillar in the electronic music community - santiago salazar. from his formative years spent in california to his connection with detroit and the passing of a childhood friend, the long-player’s tracks signpost the musician’s significant experiences, both positive and negative. this meaningful body of work was released digitally on pastel voids and now rekids release the album on wax. ‘saturated fear’ sets a deep tone for the lp, flanging melodies and echoing claps float through the composition before the album’s title track ‘aspirations for young xol’ offers haunting arpeggios with occasional acidic overtones which are cleverly offset by beautifully designed lead synth transitions. ‘bloodlines’ follows a similar musical vein with delayed bass riffs that are suspended above shimmering hihats and a weighted kick. santiago provides three beatless pieces throughout, which digress into more emotional territory whilst offering brief respite from his heavier drum work. ‘xol’s pain’ combines orchestral strings and swelling synthesisers which build tension with a subtly complex, evolving motif. both ‘dark matter’ and ‘ode to stinson’ use arresting atmospheres, warped arpeggios and ethereal pads which lull the listener into a retrospective mood. an intensity builds in the later tracks, a gritty but powerful low end provides a solid foundation in ‘orange blossom thump”, eventually making way for a hectic and elastic lead synth before ‘pachuco dub’ displays drones that build a dissonant pressure in which the complex tom rhythms and rolling hi hats can grow. ‘sarah rivera’ hypnotises with its delectable chord progressions and complimentary melodies which seem to float above a rigid drum composition to close the album with style
