dark sky schieben zum frisch veröffentlichten zweiten album gleich die nächste single hinterher. mit seiner emotional aufgeladenen deepness und einem füllig-fordernden techno-unterbau führt the passenger viele dinge zusammen, die othona so besonders machen. auf der b-seite weiß roman flügel mit seiner ganzen erfahrung, was es bei the walker braucht, um aus dem albumtrack eine euphorie-schleuder zu machen. und die hochtourige und trotzdem verträumte live-version von angel ist schließlich die definitive visitenkarte für dark skys live-sets.

zur feier ihres zweiten albums -othona- lassen dark sky zwei ihrer aktuellen tracks remixen. hier kommt ein abgebrühtes dancefloor-doppel mit freundlichen grüßen aus miami und münchen. omnidisc-labelchef danny daze übernimmt das atmosphärische -the walker-, schraubt das intensitätslevel ganz weit nach oben und lässt seinen düster pulsierenden, langen aufbau in einem slammenden ebm-finale aufgehen. münchens erste techno-sahne, die zenker brothers, bauen -kilter- um, mit herrlichen breakbeats, brutzelnden industrial-texturen und melodischen versatzstücken des originals. perfekt auf den punkt, anders hätte man das nicht erwartet.

dark sky stehen für weiterentwicklung. nie hat sich das londoner duo auf einen sound festgelegt oder in einer nische ausgeruht. was alle ihre gefeierten veröffentlichungen eint, ist eine leidenschaft für fast alle formen von elektronischer musik auch neben dem dancefloor und ein brillantes technisches handwerk. das bleibt auch auf -othona- so, dem zweiten album von dark sky für monkeytown records. auf neun tracks erfinden sich matt benyayer und tom edwards wieder ein bisschen neu und verknüpfen modernen techno, klassische electronica und ihre britischen bassmusik-wurzeln zu einem berührenden und absolut eigenwilligen ganzen.

dark sky kehren mit zwei hocheffektiven techno-tracks zurück, deren finster raunende basslines klarstellen, dass das londoner duo nichts von seinen produktions-skills eingebüßt hat. -kilter- ist ein rhythmusgetriebener clubhit, dessen übergroß vibrierende bassline typisch für dark sky ist. in -acacia- verdrängen luftige flächen den bass zunächst, bis sich langsam ein beat in bewegung setzt und am ende doch wieder den laden zum wackeln bringt. dark skys erstes release seit -voyages- (2015) ist eine teilweise sehr entschiedene sache, aber auch nur ein winziger eindruck davon, was uns auf ihrem kommenden album -othona- erwartet.

nie klangen dark sky smoothier als auf rainkist, einer modernen soul-ballade mit genialer bassline, melodischer eleganz und verschleierten falsettvocals, aus der schweiß und sex triefen. anders die remixer: der trevino remix mit seinen scifi-synths, electro-snares und claps ist ein slowburner für den behutsamen aufbau. marcel dettmann wiederum streckt das spannungsgeladene intro mit hämmerndem subbass und sehnsüchtigen vocals zu einem pumpenden techno-track aus, der bei 3:30 minuten droppt, um sich dann in einen absoluten dancefloor-filler zu verwandeln, der beste chancen hat die remixpolls in 2014 ordentlich aufzumischen.

trickreich und zartfühlend zugleich, klingt es wesentlich endorphin-geschwängerter als die bis jetzt veröffentlichten singles. das mag zunächst verwirrend sein, aber die Überraschung gelingt. die reise, die dark sky zurück gelegt haben, muss von extremem musikkonsum begleitet gewesen sein. das album evoziert bilder eines erwachsenwerdens durch sound. vor allem eine musikalische dekade hat dark sky beeinflusst, die 90er und all die vielen musikrichtungen, die damals wiederentdeckt worden sind finden sich auch auf imagin wieder. funk, bossa nova, eine ganze menge triphop, aber auch post-rock, ambient, balearic-house und 80ies pop alles geschüttelt und gerührt und in einem post-dubstep cocktailglas serviert. eiskalt selbstverständlich

die single zum debütalbum von dark sky featured zwei killerhits: -odyssey- ist ein electro- swagger, der in den großen clubs und auf open air festivals diesen sommer ordentlich einheizen wird. die metallische bassline und die euphorischen scifi-stabs klingen nach präzisions-geheimwaffe. ein must-have-tool für jeden electro-, house- oder uk-bass-dj. -silent fall- gibt sich introvertier zwischen james blake und moderat. der subtilere ansatz dieses tracks beschwört verschwitzte sonnenaufgänge und sich langsam anbahnende serotonin ausschüttungen. get it.

catherine and gerald o-connell s work as lives of angels quietly and subtly helped to define a whole generation of post-punkers for the greater part of the 1980s. much like other luminaries of the scene at the time, the couple have remained in the shadows of time, highly praised by the collectors but barely ever cited by the mainstream, and if that s not punk then we don t know what is. dark entries are doing the honours of course, and the imprint have managed to license a whole bag of previously released and unreleased material, the former from a bunch of dusty cassettes which are now going for gold on the second-hand market. this was the era of the drum machine, and these 11 tunes are all carried by that unmistakable analogue swing, at times harsh and leaning into something tech-minded, and at other times playful and quirky, a tendency which defined this outfit and the time in which they operated. what a record, this is another dark entries monster
