r&s newcomer karim sahraoui delivers an ep of deep, emotive techno that draws on the rich legacy of detroit while staying relevant for the modern era. sahraoui is a globetrotting seeker of musical truth spending time in malaysia, italy and spain as well as his native france, he recorded in the early 2000s to some acclaim as djinxx, releasing prolifically for delsin, cocoon, f-com bedrock, and ovum amongst others. in 2009 he took a couple of years out from the industry, travelling to malaysia to find himself. in 2011 a chance meeting reconnected sahraoui with derrick may, who he originally met in the late 90s. may was reactivating transmat and persuaded karim to let him release his music, but on the condition it be under his own name. the resulting pair of eternal life eps in 2014 and 2016 marked his rich return to form glorious melodic, contemplative techno in the classic motor city mode. his plenitude ep for r&s builds on similar positive themes - from the percolating arpeggios and mystic melodies of spy of the desert, to the anthemic jazzy techo paen of born again or the aching symphonic build of before the 2nd coming its clear that after decades in the business sahraouis talent is only growing rather than diminishing. i wanted to give it more spirituality, musicality and roots with the choice of the sounds. going back in the past and transcribe everything with visionary fusions, sahraoui explains.

the two diggers project has been steadily increasing in productivity since first emerging in 2015, and now it makes the move to jack s house recordings with this no-nonsense three-tracker. -head trip- keeps things simple but utterly effective with a crisp beat, subby bassline and catchy lead arpeggio, while -down the street- takes a groovier, albeit equally stripped back, approach. -you are my groove- spreads itself across the b-side with a brighter disposition that lets warm and soulful samples slip in between the classic house rhythms. if you re looking for straight-up jams that will do the business on the floor, look no further.

repress 2017 , allez! as the curtains come down on another crazy summer of love, apollonia drop their latest release courtesy of io mulen - the ukranian rude boy who appeared on the label at the beginning of the year with ‘unknown to the unknown’. he’s back with a hefty six-track package which is sure to please his fans, and win him a whole new army of supporters. we get straight to business with the first track, ‘rdm37’, one of those trusty apollonia bouncing bombs. skittish beats work off a sublime groove, while io keeps the background full of interesting sounds, boings, cheeps and all manner of whimsical effects, introducing more and more as the track progresses. by the midpoint you’re so gripped by the track that your whole body is moving uncontrollably, super glued to the rhythm. next up, it’s ‘xdt54’ coming through with a deep, persuasive bassline that jigs around in the low end luring you into its web. simple, polished percussive elements keep things moving at a pace while subtle keys and barely-there vocals add further layers to this catchy little number. the third track in on this lengthy ep is ‘mpc13’, a walk on the sensual side. vocal snippets are interspersed among sultry pads, skipping four to the floor beats and a sleazy b-line to create a delectable slice of dance floor naughtiness. this one flirts with you as it writhes around, taking you ever deeper…four tracks in we have ‘zgb41’, another alluring cut that has all the hallmarks of a deep house classic. those shimmering pads, a bassline that feels like it was born in nineties chicago, diamond-cut beats and a general feeling of what we would call ‘true house music’. there’s soul, there’s funk and there’s realness, what more can you ask for?ypt58’ keeps us locked in to that hypnotic groove with an insistent b-line holding things down - together with the infectious rhythm cultivated by the drum arrangement, it’s a killer combo. put those together with the smooth atmospherics plus synth lines staggering in and out of the background and you’ve got yourself a roller. last but definitely not least is ‘zxy22’, a wistful slice of technoid funk which has a delicate melody at its foundation. as it develops we get sucked in to layer upon layer of beauty, from the analogue low end to the electric guitar riff – each layer complementing the other and creating a symphony of sounds that acts as a perfect way to close out the ep and will no doubt end plenty of dj sets, when it’s released. so monsieur io (mulen) returns to apollonia with an instant classic, make sure you snap it up right away. magnifique!

creepin in plays with the gray areas that exist between genres, contrasting with the clarity of the digital synths and over saturated analog drums. next up ineffekt is acid electro cut with thrashing percussion held together with 808 drums. red alert is the only track with a vocal. classic roland drums, deep sub and hardware synths mixed with the hypnotic vocal overlays make this one for the freaks. sky pager is slow cooked mid 90 s jacking business, the kind i m known for. 808 trash pile is an acid hammer of a cut with the drum and synth doing a maniacal game of call and response.

the vinyl only label comes from ant plate (of rhythm plate notoriety), and following some turns from ant himself as yse saint laur ant the label branches out to welcome brand new entity (or quite possibly alias) bubbadog to the playing field. the quality of the music eschews any notions of who did what, as the tumbling latin tones of -alma- meet with the laid-back, handclap-heavy bliss of -threshold-. -boodoo- on the flip deals in a more peppy kind of offbeat house, and then -talkin talkin - and -harry- drop down into a classic bit of funk breaks business.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!

geno records first release comes to you from belgium based dan d. dan comes from a traditional of both classical and jazz traditions. dan also developed a love of latin dance in his youth. once moving to berlin in 2001, dan was further influenced by the house sounds of the original panorama bar. dan himself has continued on to dj some of berlins best parties/venues including beatstreet, watergate, arena, maria, and the new panorama bar. club der visionäre has also been very important to dans musical growth. dan has had the opportunity to cut his teeth playing 10 hour marathon sets during his regular appearances since 2004. furthermore, he appeared in clubs like rote sonne (munich) and decadance (gent, belgium). friends like tobi neumann and dinky got him into production in 2003. dans first vinyl release on district of corruption lead to praise from some of the best djs in the business. the african market is quite an evolved sophomoric release for dan. the title track, african market, is a pulsating but stripped down organic percussive journey. afro-cuban rhythms lovingly exchange energy with warm analog synths and crisp techno electronic beats. the flip side, el baile, is a slow burning house jam. el baile features eerily reverberated studio recorded vuvuzela, crisply saturated jazz keys, and the same pumping afro-cuban rhythms that sets dans sound apart from others.

retrofit reaches release no. 4 with a solo endeavour from boss jay shepheard that truly encapsulates the labels mantra of referencing vintage house, disco and techno but laying it in a sheen of contemporary sonic dynamism. this is more than evident on the expertly paced >all over my nord< which is driven by a richly elastic analogue bassline riding the slick syncopation. a surfeit of melodic stabs imbues the track with real energy whilst the gradual rise to dominance of a pad wash drenched in detroit atmospherics adds the requisite emotion! this is complemented by the much more immediate >string theory< which opens the b side with a master class in future retro jacking house business whilst >kuderskis groove< bridges the gap between filtered disco aesthetics and deep house bpms with nonchalant ease. prime dj business once again from the retrofit camp.

the more dedicated amongst you may have noticed a very limited run of purple labelled 12s doing the rounds earlier this year bearing only the roman numeral for 1990, and comprising of two reworked club classics from the year in question well... this time we are looking back at 1987 hard to believe club music this sophisticated sprang forth from the most rudimentary equipment available it truly was a pioneering age - and its testimony to the enduring power of these raw, formative grooves that they can still easily carry a dancefloor four tracks then ranging from slamming chicago jams, to drug addled english basement music all respectfully rewired for a new generation

the berlin-based dj and producer eva be is no newcomer to the international dance-music scene. 2 years ago she released her long-player >moving without travelling< on bestseven / sonar kollektiv records creating her very own trademark dub-influenced electronic sound. this ep is the logical continuation of her musical output as she has been djing quite a heavy 4/4 sound in the last years playing alongside best works records djs andre lodemann, roland appel and alex barck of jazzanova in places such as goa/madrid, cookies/berlin, dampfzentrale/bern, etc.

daniel steinberg and front room are like annoyingly sexy couples that you end up in the next hotel room to on a company business trip. except of course daniel steinberg and front room dont actually have sex they just literally make sweet music together. the spiciness continues with the preacherman ep, daniel steinbergs fifth release on front room recordings. punctuated with the exotic and the kind of twists, bumps and energy that only steinberg can provide, preacherman kicks off a cacophony of funk fuelled head nodding to get any party pulsating. “you need love” with its in-your-face vocal, huge beat and sleazy decelerating breakdown has future classic written all over it. the long awaited tiefschwarz remix of “lucky sauce” also sees the light of day here in full effect and breathes a new layer of ‘wow’over a release that is only really just beginning to simmer down from its release in june. wonked out groover who stopped the music rounds proceedings off nicely on an ep that is audio proof that the stroke of his talent only gets more precise and dazzling with every release. daniel steinbergs releases are supported by the likes of ricardo villalobos, luciano, claude vonstroke and richie hawtin to name drop a few. watch this space for daniel steinbergs artist album coming out on front room in 2010

minefield e.p. is the second real soon release by dublin-based italian producer leopoldo rosa (aka lerosa). on this 4-track ep leo brings us more of his warm, loose-limbed, us-influenced, abstract house experiments and, on the snappy title track minefield, refers back to his earlier electro sound. whatever the style, leo has a distinctive touch and a refreshingly simple, unpretentious production style - letting the machines do their business with the minimum of fuss. leo has started to build a strong reputation over the past two years with a series of excellent releases on real soon, enclave recordings, a touch of class, uzuri and millions of moments and has recently entered the live arena - look out for him in a club near you

groovebox ep is filled with some class a material for the raunchy dancefloor. first up there is into the club. this track is typical for channel x: it will blow off the roof in the club! as the title of the track already suggests, this is another one of channel xs lengthy journeys into nightlife extravaganzas. a wonderful fidgety bassline and a loop filled with loads of soulful vocal samples from strong male leads to sensitive female souls, this tune is both deep, touchful and destroying. the chainsaw effect session in the middle paves the way for more stomping tech-house business. no time to recover from this, because on the flip its straight onto the floor with wake up: a loop thats made of trillions of little cut-up effects, vocal bits and some straight four to the floor business. after a playful beginning the tune moves into an hypnotic piece of trippy techno only to be converted into a restless party anthem for the Überpeak-time. sick! perhaps there is some time to chill with the last of the three tracks that is against the wall. here it becomes clear what channel x are best at: to create dark, hard and moving electronic music with that special ingredient that is soul. this track is a perfect example: some frightening effects, lots of reverb on the creepy samples, but such a wonderfully harmonic sample that seems to shed light at the end of the never-ending afterhour. if there is a message to this music, it would be: you need to look hard, but there is always love. once again label boss oliver koletzki has picked up these two very talented producers very early upon their career and it has paid off: in one release being better than the one before

for flash lützenkirchen delivers three very classy dancefloor burners. first up there is >enter the moonlight<, an enchanting piece of thumping peak time business. a big bass, pumping beats and some great oriental sounds combined with far-out effects create a unique atmosphere. modern styles meet oldskool feelings! >on the shore< is even more oldskool than that. the fat and wobbly bassline pushes the track forward and creates the perfect antagonism to the warm effects and clicky minimal beats. the highlight - however - is the wonderfully written melodic piano piece that turns this track from wicked into wow! beautiful and tough, oldskool and fresh, slick and funky - all at the same time. this one is going to be huge. listen for yourself! at last there is >pokemon companion<, a more direct and solid piece of minimal tech. a drum’n bass like powerfully grumbling bass, and yet another memorable synthie pattern that seems to grow out of the buzzing loop like a spring flower out of wet grass - naturally and wonderful!
