ricardo villalobos remixes deardrum from alejandro mosso s album isolation diaries recently released on third ear. villalobos worked up a 40 minute jam from which this is a 9 minute section which moves from a gentle pattering of sounds into a full-on villalobos groove, taught and slinky at the same time, i.e. irresistibly funky. the jam then subsides into chattering noises before the groove begins again. burnt friedman s remix of isolation diaries is a slow burning super funky jam with classic burnt friedman dub elements laced through the track together with the melody twisted and phased. the closing track from the album, mounivers, completes this fine release.

following the meeting between masomenos, vadim svoboda and m hamed el menjira, abdessamad boussahfa and sanhaji, cosmo records is once more exploring the crossover between western electronic music producers and traditional african instrumentalists. this time around the casablanca-based label is welcoming a new artist to the fold. cesar merveille has been active in the european house and techno scene for many years, releasing on labels such as cadenza and visionquest while always pursuing his own unique creative agenda inside and outside the conjines of club music. cesar s recent adventures have found him launching roche madame, a label for his most personal and expressive work. in the spirit of this exciting new phase in his career, this release for cosmo jinds him working with the captivating tones of senegalese vocalist malik diop across a range of tracks that capture the crosscultural spirit of cosmo. -kosmos- is a thoroughly delicate production, using intricate threads of percussion that fall in intriguing, fractured patterns behind the layers of malik s voice. the melodic content follows this hypnotic format, drifting in and out of earshot in a playful key that speaks to west african traditions even as it transmits through contemporary synthesis.

with its non-placed devices and hard-to-pin-down aesthetic falling between electronic and psychedelic music and the warm-hued sounds of traditional acoustic instruments, burnt friedmans zokuhen,produced exclusively for vinyl, may be considered an extension of bokoboko. on this new double ep, too, the music focuses on uneven rhythms that dictate the groove for all the participating musical elements and display a formal logic to which all the instruments gladly succumb. with its even rhythm and proximity to dub reggae, the track kon ki (c2) shows that exceptions from the rule are permitted among the six new tracks and two re-worked bokoboko themes that round off this follow-up.

theo roars into a fierce, uglier-than-ugly edit, with no let-up for thirteen minutes, when it crashes to a standstill: a hurtling, mesmerizing ride, multi-layered and clustered with synth washes, bleeps and alarms, galloping drums, clattering percussion.burnts shangaan variation is perforce more chilled, lithe, reverberating. the drums are crafted and fatback, with moody vocal interjections and haunting keys, chocka with dub thrills and spills, lethally spiked with bass.

this compilation spanning a period of 37 years features burnt friedmanÕs releases and edits thereof from vinyl-only labels (latency (fr), marionette (ca), dekmantel (nl) amongst others) plus 4 hitherto unreleased tracks, making them available on digital formats. friedmanÕs music from 1980 to 2017 covers a broad spectrum of played and programmed rhythmic styles that traverse not only club music from techno, electro and dub, but, above all, trace friedmanÕs own artistic development. a trajectory that owes a lot to his long-standing collaboration with can drummer jaki liebezeit, who died at the age of 79 in 2017. like liebezeit, friedman already explored even and uneven rhythms back in the late 1980s. this selection of 17 tracks documents this pursuit while bringing rough or discarded tracks to light, which did not fit onto any album or were intended for the nonplace label. the compilation runs the entire gamut of his work on percussion, keyboard, samplers and toys of all kinds using various production methods (tape, atari, midi, sampler, hard disk recording, digital audio tape). studio work (instant-composition, programming and recording) underwent major technological changes and revolutions in the 1980s and 1990s, but friedmanÕs distinctive signature style prevails throughout. surprisingly danceable tracks, interrupted by alien atmospheric periods, defy any genre.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpre-tation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound ob-jects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listen-ers to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark.

since its launch in 2013, bright sounds has established itself as a label bridging the gap between the dancefloor and more experimental sounds, releasing eps by the likes of shlomo, tilliander, burnt friedman or more recently conforce. on its eleventh release, the label welcomes ben thomas aka bnjmn with “final network” ep, the uk producer based in berlin and releasing on tresor, delsin, counterchange or more recently on his newly founded imprint: tiercel. the ep opens up with “reticuli”, an ambient techno journey into a forest of otherworldly sounds. “neurocity” comes next with its rattling sounds met by disorienting and spooky melodies. on the b-side “cloaked” starts off with bare kick and congos before waves of drones add textures producing an eerie atmosphere. the title track closes this ep, slowly building to create an ecstatic floating mood, leaving you longing for more as it gently fades away.

as part of the ten-year anniversary dekmantel presents the final record in a ten-part-ep series. split into two parts due to its immensity, the final instalment is a re-issue of tony allens asiko (in a silent mix) originally released in 1999 and remixes by motor city drum ensemble and ricardo villalobos. the first part features a grandiose 29-minute ricardo villalobos version of the afrobeat masters cut. a true collaboration of giants.having been a regular at the festival for several years now, villalobos delivers a remix, one of his longest to date, that only he can produce. allowing the percussion to breathe into a monumental rhythm, villalobos warps the vocals, restructuring the bass and drums into a rolling dub-fusion of techno that is characteristic of his remixes to date, yet still breathtaking in its execution. afrobeat-minimalism, with dub-infused fire, and near psychedelic ambience that perfectly synchs the worlds of tony allen, and ricardo villalobos, two legends who’ve helped re-shape the face of music. highlighting the diversity of sounds that have come to represent the dutch label and festival series, the eps to date have encompassed a range of artists and genres, featuring label favourites, as well as whole bunch of debuting artists. the ep series kicked off in march 2018, and over the course of a year featured the likes of gigi masin, lena willikens, burnt friedman, donato dozzy, the egyptian lover, palms trax, and more.

following on from march s shlømo remix package featuring donato dozzy, bambounou, shlømo and label boss kennedy smith, bright sound s second release of 2016 will new a brand new ep from sweden s andreas tilliander. with his releases on his own repeatle imprint and his tm404 alias s hardware-driven techno featuring on skudge white and kontra-musik, tilliander is among sweden s most versatile talents working right now. his arrival on bright sounds is of a piece with bsrx 004, last year s reissue of fellow swede henrik johansson s 1997 ep as smyglyssna. as with johansson s record, tilliander s stettin libau ep explores slower tempo techno, locating the moments of space and energy in between its rhythmic structures. this search is most keenly observed in knapp ledsyn , with its ever-shifting sonic landscape melting away at various points to reveal its unusual, skeletal beats and hidden melodic details, while the ep title track and nybliven lots apply that approach to what might at first be a traditional dub techno template, yet still offering further small moments of off-beat character. completing the release is a detox operation remix of knapp ledsyn from nonplace records chief burnt friedman, in which the german veteran strips things down to a gentle patter of drums overlaid with suggestive flashes of the original s rich atmospheric elements.
