am 22. november 1967 nahm otis redding seinen größten hit “(sittin’ on) the dock of the bay” auf. er wurde der einzige hit, den redding sowohl in den r&b- als auch in den pop-charts auf position 1 platzieren konnte. doch das schicksal wollte es, dass otis redding dies nicht mehr erleben durfte: er kam vier wochen vor der veröffentlichung bei einem flugzeugunglück ums leben.
heute gehört der song mit der charakteristischen, gepfiffenen melodie am ende zu den bekanntesten und beliebtesten songs der musikgeschichte und zur säule des bahnbrechenden recording-katalogs von otis reddings. noch immer fasziniert er ganze generationen und gehört zu einer handvoll von songs aus den 1960ern, die über 100 millionen streams auf spotify verzeichnen!
50 jahre nach der erstveröffentlichung am 8 januar 1968, bringt rhino “(sittin’ on) the dock of the bay” als 7”-single auf goldfarbenem vinyl in einer detailgenauen reproduktion der original-monosingle heraus. als b-seite enthält es “sweet lorene” in der optischen wiedergabe als volt-veröffentlichung, verpackt in einer gestanzten hülle wie jene, die atlantic records seinerzeit benutzten, als sie die stax / volt-schallplatten vertrieben.

south african house and synth-funk from the kwaito era by the legendary senyaka kekana. the unexpected deep house jam bayanyonyoba (1993) and the illustrious soul song dont judge me bad (1987) are big rh favorites. original copies are absolutely impossible to find, now released on 12inch for the first time. beautiful sleeve by stenze quo! esa williams i had the pleasure of performing alongside senyaka at the alexander theatre, johannesburg back in 2012 which would have probably been his last most iconic gig before his passing in 2015. these two tracks really showcase the sounds of south africa around the early to late 80’s, the influences from american synth pop and house that would then lead later into many of these records being played at the wrong speed which ultimately became the original kwaito sound from south africa

kanda bongo man is a giant of african music and the artist credited with introducing john peel to african music. his fans number vampire weekend (cape cod kwassa kwassa), paul simon and john peel. all the tracks were recorded for joe boyds hannibal records between 1984-91, an era we can look back on today as the high watermark of parisian soukous, and showcase a band at the height of their powers. behind his soaring voice kanda employed diblo dibala and rigo star, two lead guitarists who are widely considered as the best soukous guitarists who ever lived. diblo was recruited from the band led by the legendary franco whilst rigos scorching licks graced albums by paul simon and it was their twinning that gave kandas music a wonderfully joyous, ringing quality. they both feature extensively on the -king of kwassa kwassa-.
