midnight moves. thats what comes to mind when you listen to cale parks s n1, preferably at an hour long after dusk has settled around you in some beautiful, insomniac city. parks finds – or more aptly, seeks – beauty and grace in ambience and shadows. n1 starts as pure atmosphere – it feels at first like a sort of lovely sonic nothingness slowly taking form – before growing into the darkly lit, gorgeous moodscape it later becomes. a sensual bassline, a pulsing downbeat, a cinematic piano, strains of italo disco, and the sensation of breezing down a lightless road. if you could make sensuous shapes of the night – imagine kneading the dark itself – it might, at the very best, feel like this. the task of remixing parks s original is taken up by french duo paradis, who can otherwise be heard making music on tim sweeney s beats in space label. the paris-based producers shine a brightening light on parks s dusky creation, quickening its pulse and trading in its darkwave undercurrents for enlivening techno and house. theres an element of floating here – a dreaminess in the rhythms, an astral aspect to the keys beaming through the beats. and with the addition of vocals, sung in french – a pop finishing touch on a song that already feels like an earworm – the transformation is complete. this excellent introduction to cale parkss music is also his debut release on the hakt label.

dark maneuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. the 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. slam were very much involved in the progression of techno at the same time as envoy was creating tracks such as dark manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. the distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression.

terrence parker is a detroit legend and to celebrate this first edition of finally (terrence parker late night dub), in the pure house tradition with shaking bass, glamourous vocals, strings and piano, we decided to asked a remix to the one in france that keeps the houses flag high and strong: manoo. maya jane coles remixer, mixed on panorama bar 04 by nick höppner, signed on such labels as deeply rooted house, real tone record, ... with manoos remix, the vocal has been changed in an hypnotic mantra, synths are like rolling waves and the drum section is like a heartbeat. also two others remixers from the d!fus team lead the track in real different directions: laurent caligaris choosed the love and deep side: nostalgic and beautifull. maxco found the dark side of the deepness, miles away from the original reconstructed on rythmics, ambiance and deep synths.
