savas pascalidis releases heavy new ep brain waves on atrophic society savas pascalidis is an artist who needs little in the way of introduction. having a career that spans the last 25 years. and releases on a staggering number of great labels (gigolo records. kurbel. non series. mote evolver. stockholm ltd. children of tommorow. skudge. figure and many more). were proud to welcome savas to the atrophic society family. brain waves sees further exploration of the techno that defines savas’ sound. savage. grooving and dripping in nuance. all four cuts on this ep will set the night on fire. distant dreams is a tunnelling beast that twists and turns over itself with insistent percussive slaps and grooving bass. underpinning a driving synth line that stacks up to create a furious ep opener. there were no parts to work from to make a remix with. so in a total class move echologist drops a cover mix of the b1 track resonate. though it could be said that it’s inspired by all the original tracks on the ep. he strips it back to the bare necessities and propels it forward in true echologist style. the original of resonate is noisey and blustery as the title would suggest. hissing and bleeping over a mid range bassline that tastefully peaks and troughs for the length of the journey. finally. rounding out the ep in total class. subminimal crescendo’s with layers of noise and delay over a funk-fuelled rhythm. all four tracks on this forward thinking ep for atrophic society are essential machine-made music and an outstanding addition to savas body of work.

after solemnly closing out the spc-series in 2016. jeroen search hands in his second ep of the year for figure. carrying his signature style. these tunes embody the live-recording feel he is known for. perfectly executed and arranged in clean-cut layers. both tracks on the a-side feature big and beefy beats. their generous sub-range creating ample space for the juxtaposing elements to effectively slice through. whether it be the penetrating bleeps of deduced or the piercing rides on interval. things get bumpy on the flip when the rugged but undeniable groove of steady pulse firmly stands its ground against repeated onslaughts of flailing percussion. the jolty rhythms and tinkling loops of endless circles may seem like it being the odd one out. but unexpectedly merge into an intricate mesh of sounds. making for a most memorable closer to this jam-packed ep.

night blind is richard fearless second release on drones white label series. the title track coalesced in the early hours of the morning as diffuse. turneresque lights glimmered across the thames and the container was pounded by a storm. unnerving and melancholic yet with a glimmer of light. this is fearless at his best. on the b side is cancan. with xaviers spiritual acid head. kenichi iwasa. on percussion duties. this is one for peak time body shaking. both tracks were recorded and mixed at the metal box by chris blakey and produced by richard fearless. stamped and numbered edition of 300 vinyl

there is an intricate sorrow to isorinne s new album. speechless malison. though broadly melodic. it feels exhausted rather than restrained. though rippling with a pulse. the rhythmic passages are sparse. their measured source a great distance away. building on last year s cassette. echoic memoir. speechless malison takes greater and emotive strides. however brittle the path.
a prison of predictions is the first lp from the ownlife label (excepting seld series. focused in pressing back gems from two decades ago) and also by the person behind it. leiras.
on it. the producer showcases a compendium featuring the characteristic sound of the platform. pushing ahead cyclical techno together with tracks that evoke the persistence of remembrance. echoing the preterit sound of sandwell district and renewed sound formulas from almost two decades of uk electronica. ambient brush strokes outline soundscapes surrounded by analogue sounds that share space with more direct and snappy songs. a scape on the frenetic side of electronica with an idm-leaning end closes the equation.
substantiating his versatility as a producer with the label’s previous 10 titles and undoubtedly confirmed on this record. leiras offers a consequent closing for the first stage of ownlife. which finishes on this point in order to look for new sound structures for the next transmissions.
this lp has been created in berlin during the last months using mixed recording techniques with the purpose of conceiving a narrative thread that gives coherence to the release. without doubt an inflection point in leiras’ discography.

those who physically suffer from dopamine depletion seek ways to experience maximized pleasure. hong kongs hyper everything enfant terrible. s.y. delivers a much darker complex ep than his two previous offerings under a new alias. a creative therapy of sorts apparently dealing with substance abuse and unstable mental conditions which luckily for everyone translates into more leftfield dancefloor gold with the brilliantly nondescript $ lfo and weirdo power drive of the title track on a side. followed on the flip by a surprisingly beautiful ode to concrete music. and a deeply haunting field recording piece that closes a perfectly round ep... or does it? sleeve artwork by matt damhave

the pieces were created as structured improvisations using a monophonic synth (primarily) along with a yamaha dx7 (borrowed from a friend) and possibly a guitar. recording was made on an older otari mx5050 1/2 8 track. mixing was done on a tascam m-50 console and a revox a77 1/4 machine. i recall the project happened in two bursts: i did half of it in september 85. then i finished up and edited the album together in december 85. i dont really recall making copies for anyone. i think i played it for a dozen people and that was it. just forgot about it. i remember jeff ament from pearl jam (green river back then) came by while i had it playing on my home stereo. he asked what it was and said he liked it. surprised me a little. with regard to overall aesthetic: i like the sound of machinery. but i enjoy the fragility of human error and human instinct. i like to put things into motion then climb aboard and drive. i can’t play an instrument (in the classical sense) for the life of me. so i’ve always just played things that are mostly choice rather than a convolution of style and technique. i guess you call that the brian eno school of rock.

legendary los hermanos member santiago salazar’s album ‘aspirations for young xol’ is given a vinyl release courtesy of rekids. a heartfelt dedication to his son isaias. ‘aspirations for young xol’ takes us through the life of a pillar in the electronic music community - santiago salazar. from his formative years spent in california to his connection with detroit and the passing of a childhood friend. the long-player’s tracks signpost the musician’s significant experiences. both positive and negative. this meaningful body of work was released digitally on pastel voids and now rekids release the album on wax. ‘saturated fear’ sets a deep tone for the lp. flanging melodies and echoing claps float through the composition before the album’s title track ‘aspirations for young xol’ offers haunting arpeggios with occasional acidic overtones which are cleverly offset by beautifully designed lead synth transitions. ‘bloodlines’ follows a similar musical vein with delayed bass riffs that are suspended above shimmering hihats and a weighted kick. santiago provides three beatless pieces throughout. which digress into more emotional territory whilst offering brief respite from his heavier drum work. ‘xol’s pain’ combines orchestral strings and swelling synthesisers which build tension with a subtly complex. evolving motif. both ‘dark matter’ and ‘ode to stinson’ use arresting atmospheres. warped arpeggios and ethereal pads which lull the listener into a retrospective mood. an intensity builds in the later tracks. a gritty but powerful low end provides a solid foundation in ‘orange blossom thump”. eventually making way for a hectic and elastic lead synth before ‘pachuco dub’ displays drones that build a dissonant pressure in which the complex tom rhythms and rolling hi hats can grow. ‘sarah rivera’ hypnotises with its delectable chord progressions and complimentary melodies which seem to float above a rigid drum composition to close the album with style
