by the 1970s studio one and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in reggae for almost two decades. from running the downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of kingston in the late 1950s to opening studio one at 13 brentford road at the start of the 1960s. ushering in ska and rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of jamaica’s artists – everyone from bob marley and the wailers. ken boothe. toots and the maytals. the skatalites. jackie mittoo and more – clement dodd had until this point dominated the jamaican musical world.
along with his rival. cornell campbell. johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston. clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown. sugar minott and the diamonds. which led to a debut recording in 1973. for the pianist glen stair. which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles. ‘god made the sea and sun.’ was not promoted properly. though ‘everyday wondering.’ for rupie edwards. impacted in britain. ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee. who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero. who failed to muster a credible take). which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album. enter into his gates with praise. mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons. slim smith and delroy wilson. along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

the sound of studio one can be identified by the great singers that it cultivated along the many great songs that these singers released. but as studio 1 s dominance was slowly pulled away by the up and coming new breed of producers many of the artists would inevitably end up working for these new camps and so the songs and singers found a new audience. the reggae sound of the studio 1 would make a great combination and the man to pull this was together bunny lee.
music with soul is back with another boundary-pushing smasher. the unexpected debut from eládio & robinho. a mysterious afro-fuzzed-hair duo from the fourth world that has emerged to explore and expand the inexplicably hesitant relation between the classic rhythms of jamaica and the southern hemisphere of the american continent. “queimando quente” showcases a swinging brazilian-infused heavy-hitting reggae. masterfully painted by the hypnotic sound of a tenor-sax melody and a laid-back cuíca. all recorded in our very own barracao sound studio. under the baton of the unmistakable alex figueira of fumaça preta and conjunto papa upa.

roots vocalist barry brown has an inimitable style that has long made him a favourite of reggae enthusiasts. drawing from the popular phrasing of horace andy. but morphing it into his own delivery through the kind of wordless slurring that occasionally resembles the sound of a quacking duck. brown found his way into the jamaican music scene through the many amateur west kingston talent contests of the early 1970s. along with fellow aspiring talents such as johnnie clarke. sugar minott and the african brothers. and the mighty diamonds. he also honed his vocal skills on local west kingston sound systems such as tape tone. together with other young dancehall-oriented youth such as barrington levy. sammy dread. roy taylor and tristan palmer. there are still conflicting claims as to who was the first to record brown. with production veteran bunny ‘striker’ lee and sugar minott among the contenders. but in any case. during the late 1970s and early 1980s. he produced a range of captivating work for various producers. much of which is rightly coveted today. ‘ital rock’ appeared on barry’s 1983 lp i’m still waiting. issued by rocktone international. a spin-off of sugar minott’s black roots outfit. based in queens. new york (with a further branch in toronto). the b-side has dean fraser’s previously unreleased electrifying saxophone cut. rescued from dub plate obscurity by jah fingers.

as noted on another release (see ropin). cornell campbell has enjoyed one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican singer. and he is blessed with a readily identifiable style too. he began his career for clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd in 1956. when rhythm and blues held sway in jamaica. and later cut some ska songs for king edwards. he then passed through the sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at treasure isle. before returning to studio one with the eternals. scoring huge hits such as ‘stars’ and ‘queen of the minstrel’ as the 60s gave way to the 70s. his greatest phase of popularity was them brokered by hit-making producer bunny lee. who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the 80s. the 1975 album dance in a greenwich farm was first issued on the grounation label in the uk. along with a re-working of ‘stars’ re-titled ‘the sun.’ a re-working of ‘queen of the minstrel’ as ‘girl of my dreams’ and the sound system opus that is the title track. the album has the boastful ‘conquering gorgon’ and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes. including a cut of the gaylads’ ‘no good girl.’ a version of the heptones’ ‘why did you leave me’ and a killer cut of the uniques’ ‘watch this sound’ (based on ‘for what it’s worth’ by buffalo springfield).

back to back 70s roots shots from joe morgan. his first and second ever tunes. while many know joe from his wackie s anthem basement session. joe was already producing himself in the mid 70s on his own afro black label in jamaica before coming to nyc. both of these tunes are stone cold classics long hunted by roots collectors. and the rhythms used should be familiar to astute listeners from other brilliant cuts. joe continued to record and produce himself and other artists on his own main imprint fish tea. and other labels label thru the 80s. the two tunes issued on this fish tea 12inch both originally appeared as afro black label 45 s in jamaica. and the b-side also on a pet shop label 45 in nyc
joe morgans stop them is killer late 70s militant roots. self-produced and originally released on his own jomor music house label (under the name billy joe morgan) in nyc. awesome vocal. majestic horns. heavy rhythm. a shining example of the brilliance of late 70s roots reggae and how perfectly suited the style was for the extended mix 12inch single discomix format. we ve added something special for this reissue (now on joe s main imprint fish tea). not only do we have the original 12inch replicated in full. but also an awesome and previously unreleased late 80s digital recut of the tune entitled warrior. unfortunately a dub version for this cut was never mixed. but we are grateful to have uncovered another gem from mr. morgan. one of the crucially under recorded and underrated artists of his time.

passafire s longshot. the full-length follow up to vines (2013) and the interval ep (2015). finds the band continuing to stretch in new musical directions. while still maintaining a strong core of reggae elements. some songs tread into 90s grunge. hip hop and even current pop. but for hardcore passafire fans. this genre-bending style will come as no surprise for a band that has always pushed itself through experimentation. with a foundation of hummable hooks and vicious musicianship. a guest spot by rapper mr. lif also contributes a new angle on the song -blow. vines debuted at 1 on billboard record chart.
