tony clarke did his first recording in new york in 1971 at hugh hendricks recording studio called -righteous man- of which he played both bass and lead guitar. tony clarke decided to write the song “going home” to reference the roots of his music. in those days and even now good reggae music that was being recorded in the united states was not receiving the approbation from home because. in jamaica they felt that the best reggae music could only come from and be created in jamaica to substantiate the true feeling of the genre. so he decided to go back to jamaica and record “going home” at harry j studio with sylvan morris as engineer. he also recorded the cover version to “hey little girl” originally done by dee clark. for this 12 vinyl edition. the artwork was done with a vintage photo of tony clarke in front of his house at waterhouse and extended liner notes on the back cover.

by the 1970s studio one and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in reggae for almost two decades. from running the downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of kingston in the late 1950s to opening studio one at 13 brentford road at the start of the 1960s. ushering in ska and rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of jamaica’s artists – everyone from bob marley and the wailers. ken boothe. toots and the maytals. the skatalites. jackie mittoo and more – clement dodd had until this point dominated the jamaican musical world.
born and raised by jamaican parents in london. england. alpheus developed a passion for singing after seeing an old recording of sam cooke perform on television. and performing on local sound systems in london as a youth. his love for ska rocksteady and reggae developed as he was exposed to singers like john holt. marcia griffiths. don carlos. dennis brown. frankie paul. michael gordon. keith douglas. thriller u. maxi priest. and many more great artists.
along with his rival. cornell campbell. johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston. clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown. sugar minott and the diamonds. which led to a debut recording in 1973. for the pianist glen stair. which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles. ‘god made the sea and sun.’ was not promoted properly. though ‘everyday wondering.’ for rupie edwards. impacted in britain. ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee. who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero. who failed to muster a credible take). which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album. enter into his gates with praise. mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons. slim smith and delroy wilson. along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

the sound of studio one can be identified by the great singers that it cultivated along the many great songs that these singers released. but as studio 1 s dominance was slowly pulled away by the up and coming new breed of producers many of the artists would inevitably end up working for these new camps and so the songs and singers found a new audience. the reggae sound of the studio 1 would make a great combination and the man to pull this was together bunny lee.
music with soul is back with another boundary-pushing smasher. the unexpected debut from eládio & robinho. a mysterious afro-fuzzed-hair duo from the fourth world that has emerged to explore and expand the inexplicably hesitant relation between the classic rhythms of jamaica and the southern hemisphere of the american continent. “queimando quente” showcases a swinging brazilian-infused heavy-hitting reggae. masterfully painted by the hypnotic sound of a tenor-sax melody and a laid-back cuíca. all recorded in our very own barracao sound studio. under the baton of the unmistakable alex figueira of fumaça preta and conjunto papa upa.
u-roy was a true reggae pioneer. dubbed the originator for good reason. bursting onto the jamaican scene in the earliest 1970s. he pioneered the vocal approach called ôtoasting.ö which in addition to branching out jamaican music into a new era. was also heavily influential on an american genre in its infancy: rapping. on dread in a babylon. his third full-length. he stretches out over traditional roots grooves provided by the soul syndicate and skin. flesh & bones bands. riffing on topics including love (ôrunaway girl.ö a 1975 single released in the uk on virgin records). the bible (ôthe great psalmsö). walking the straight and narrow (ôlisten to the teacherö). and even his take on governmental policy goals (ôchalice in the palaceö). the album finishes with an instrumental version of bob marley & the wailersÆ ôtrench town rock.ö for good measure. u-royÆs style and charisma are always on display. and û as with all of his classic records û the groove rules all. presented on black vinyl with a poster of the glorious. ganja-drenched cover art. itÆs the perfect chance to revisit one of the more underrated voices in jamaican musical history.
