ismo laakso s very well produced and spaceously mixed ofelia (from 1996-99) is a blend of industrial, avant garde, modern classic, bleeps and clicks. the narrative of this album sometimes undefinably blurs the lines between recorded material & samples, and also juxtapose the main grooves with highly psychedelic sound effects and (beautiful) melodies.

like all great music, it s difficult to pinpoint what this sounds like exactly - but toronto s block univers have cited their influences to include -boogie, house music, cold wave synths, gospel vocals, 808s and moog basslines- - so that would go some way to explaining the magic here. we tried to jam in as many of our favourites on this release as possible. more bang for your buck!

medical records presents the eleventh release in our transfusions 12- singles series. guilt, the collaborative project of new york city based artists, oliver chapoy and nathaniel young, is the result of 2 recording sessions during the spring of 2017.

japanese newcomer -jtt- unveils their debut vinyl on their own label yu-zen-. jtt consists of two guys, takayuki hosoda and dj java. most of their tracks are deep and micro house and nudisco music. -tone river- is one of the typical masterpieces of their tracks. it has a tense and dreamy atmosphere. it s a very simple but enough to be addicted one. -lotus root- has a mystical atmosphere. your brain can feel good unique sound effect sense. you will be into it. mastering by kuniyuki takahashi. according to his careful work these tracks have a high level of completeness.

from the on_ series where unconventional, hard edged, experimental and archival club cuts get s re-presented, remixed and highlighted. laton outs russian newcomer ectro usic with a slamming, gritty & heavy duty electro/techno full side. flip carries dj sotofett s broken but strobicly steady club mix of – austrian inventor & synth specialist – a.burger s -device c- which in original suit has been released by craft records (1996) and laton (1999). a proper zone out.

metalurgic funk vol. 2 takes a short leap from vol. 1, with all 4 cuts based around solid tonks of straight forward techno. cutting 909-hat s, tunnel-visioning and simple but detailed slings of futuristic synths thread the whole record together. pretention is left aside for upfrontness and most advanced interpretation of these looped bangers are left to happen in the listeners head while segueing into the core of techno.

the new femur release features the swiss duo savage grounds, agents of a dirty, raw and miserable sound.

following their debut release last year, new imprint union present their second offering, this time from label cofounder royal sun. royal sun takes the reins with a four track ep geared towards those with left-leaning tastes, blurring the boundaries between minimal, ambient and techno. un-002 is a perfectly crafted combination of techno offcuts, pulsating drum kicks and obscure synth sounds.

warehouse music is the imprint brought to you by london based dj and producer ryan aitchison, aka mella dee. dj mag’s ‘best breakthrough label’s’ latest offering is a collaboration between mella dee and an anonymous artist and friend of the label owner. stutter minimal mix is stripped back and hard-hitting, one for 4am shoulder shrugging, whilst collision is a tough and heavy big room cut. stutter closes the ep as a more resilient, straight mix of the a1.

following on from 2017s experimentally-focused ep, nucleus axon finds phantasy regular ghost culture return with an urgent, pristine slice of club euphoria, backed by a standout remix from legowelt. the original version of axon powers ahead with a supremely physical bassline and a ghostly atmosphere that s slathered with atmospheric choral touches, contrasted by punching, powerful drums. each perfectly tuned element weaves a seriously impressive spell of charismatic, contemporary electro. axons original form is then driven underground and transformed into something truly psychedelic at the hands of legendary producer and synth legend, legowelt. coaxing out one of his distinctive acid lines, the hague resident unravels a heady, hazy atmosphere of creeping euphoria amid a spectral, twilight groove.

and now for something completely different … cgi is extremely excited to present the proof of concept ep from shanghai-via- chicago’s osheyack. these are productions with a weight and freshness that we at cgi have not previously encountered. while on a small us tour in june 2016, osheyack played a set in atlanta and thoroughly blew everyone in the room away with a mastery of rhythm, sound, and arrangement that is uncanny. we approached osheyack after the gig for demos and what we received was as dense and inspiring as the live set. words don’t do this sound justice but it’s perhaps most fun to close your eyes and imagine a demonic cirque-du-soleil-esque techno marching band stomping through the graveyard of your dreams and resurrecting all of the wasted souls to stomp on their graves in a frenzied trance...

the second part of vuosi. shuffless gives us again two timeless pieces of their highly appreciated diversity. another trip into the deeper cosmos of northern electronic.

straight out montpellier france, comes this double vinyl feast of deep, organic electronic sound. becoming is james s. taylor (swayzak uk) and cedrick eymenier (fr). this is their debut release exploring their interest in long tracks that change almost imperceptibly - subtle earworms for domestic and public enjoyment. slacker house is thus defined by this anglo french duo.

from the fringe of a dream house music fantasy, valerie from the galerie makes their debut with an album of plush, outsider nj style house music, that cuts the space in between the nu grooves of the burrell bros, the windy city bump of &#8232,,, mr. fingers and the seductive club gleam of soichi terada.
valerie from the galerie is dedicated wife and in-house producer for legendary dj bob cuts. specialising in hydroxide house, loose chignon and the conk.

refreshingly new oldskool techno tracks by bornek nowec, a project by a rotterdam based dj/producer known for his long tied connections with the local techno scene. this release is the first outing from his large archive of techno tracks produced over the years. 4 cuts full of character that reminds us of the long nights at the nightown basement in the 90 s where he was dj ing with guys such as dj t!m aka frame six and paul du lac.

the heavy pulse of sound systems synchronizes with the precision of musique concrète and the reconstructed memory of a masked folk dance of the swiss mountains. techno, drum n bass and dub are echoed within this sonic processional, where samples are pulled apart and recycled, cut at the beginning and end, then linked together.
tresque takes his name from an open-chain circle dance from medieval southern europe. under the musical moniker d’incise he has played on numerous solo and collaborative projects with cyril bondi, designing quiet, intensive listening experiences with various combinations of software, recordings from vinyl or in the field, modified objects, percussion and harmonium. as tresque the delicate minimalism he’s known for takes shape within driving grooves. airy, spacious, amplified noise from his collection of samples is sliced and tethered to weightier, physical beats. a tension forms between uplift and downfall, hypnotically oscillating between structural textures and collective dance.

forgoing traditional melody and song-writing, eskers distinctive sound focuses on the interplay between noise, texture and rhythm. voitax is happy to present her stunning debut ep, which was assembled from various recording sessions over the past two years. formerly a drummer and guitarist in various bands in melbournes noise scene, the influence of her past is evident in this record - a combination of processed guitar, mangled samples and bizarre, ghostly synthesis form a deep and complex sonic space. the effect of almost a decade in berlin is just as clearly heard in the eps thumping techno pulse. wielded with a drummers feel for timing and meter, phasing rhythms, crunching lo-fi percussion and thundering kicks provide a solid backbone. having become absorbed in techno culture, this is her contribution.

next up on nang it is time for a slice of spot-on male vocal house and disco. liverpool based thomas lang made some fine albums in the 80s and 90s with john murphy (who went on to carve a highly successful career in movie tracks) and david hughes. somewhere in between that and a string of recent albums (“torch songs” and “the german alphabet”) he also managed to buy one of the finest recording studios in north west england, parr street studios (the “abbey road of the north”). we are pleased here at nang to see a new avenue turned in tom’s life, his first foray into the dance world. “scared” was written with late liverpool songwriter john uriel quite some time ago. it first emerged as a b-side to tom’s comeback single “august day” in 2011. here at nang we always loved the smooth and sophisticated vocal and melody. when tom suggested some remixes we were on board.

serendipity - defined as making discoveries or happy accidents - is the debut ep by liam van ryn. its a fitting description for the richly textured and cinematic four track collection that was the result of intensive and prolonged sessions goofing around on analogue gear. strictly limited 12 pressing this is a hell of a debut - one to watch for the future! the title track is the most immediately wonderful cut here, with choked arpeggios, clouds of caustic static and found scrapes as percussion. dj mag (8/10 ep review) early support from: nathan fake - interesting lush sounds lanark artefax - sounds great and is really coherent for a debut ep tessela - this is wicked man, really like that pitch1! based in hull, van ryn makes richly textured and layered, cinematic music that is both experimental and (mostly) electronic. i was interested in the way i could make the music sound slightly unnatural, or like it couldnt be played by a real musician, even though that was often the starting point, he explains. box.

the wonderfully monikered golden flamingo was one of many labels operating alongside the now legendary p&p records imprint in late 70 s to early 80 s nyc. fans of deep disco, raw gritty soul and rare as hen s teeth electro and early rap know of the cult status of it s brief but influential output and in recent years the p&p label and it s associated entities have enjoyed further popularity through the exposure of it s music by some of the world s most respected dj s and selectors, and rightfully so. an amazingly lo-fi, endearing and overtly underground aesthetic runs through all of the labels, from the label artwork down to the music itself. this style is evident on margo williams epic god save and protect all the children , a colossally rare 12- from back in 1980.

the subject of music from memorys latest compilation focuses on suso saizs output as part of the group orquesta de las nubes, formed by suso saiz and percussionist pedro estevan when the two met whilst studying a course on techniques of contemporary composition in madrid.

arcola presents mwr157 contains six lost slices of leftfield electro including the mythical and mysterious hotline a track that was originally scheduled for release on mo’wax back around about the year 2000 but only ever reached test pressing for reasons no one can quite remember, alongside five other tracks that take in dancehall, hip-hop and 2-step garage, all recorded during the same session...

kvest is a dj/producer from bosnia and herzegovina, who has previously released only digital ep s. now, his first vinyl release comes in a form of pure minimal deep techno sound. this ep includes 2 original mixes in which the synth sounds are diffused through light movement and gentle variation, as well as two awesome remixes. one of the remixes is by a young dutch producer kevin arnemann, who runs his own label taped artifact, and has performed in big techno festivals such as ade and awakenings. another remix comes from the owner of kin-ben label, the human & assets. this is the 7th vinyl release on the label.

12 inch with printed full colour sleeve and obi general purpose brings you len’s latest offering, initials. an electronic experimentation in forward-thinking balearic music. originally written between 2014 and 2015, these discarded, lost ideas persisted enough to require further investigation. taking a pause between his dub explorations, initials is the result of this inquiry.

during a warehouse dig, delfonic discovered a mysterious release from 2013 by an unknown german artist, filled with moody tracks without breaks in between, which were made in 2008. after searching for months who was behind, oye black is proud to announce the unknown artist martin georgi with 2 mpc bangers from that release cut out, along with a dj friendly edit by delfonic. oa true warehouse find for the lovers!

ryan parks is a mixed media artist, music producer/performer, and ceo/founder of critically robust cassette tape label, harsh riddims. he was born in college park, ga and grew up skating all around atlanta, soaking up the dense kaleidoscopic cultural ooze found both in and outside the perimeter of atlanta. aside from his visual practice which usually takes shape as mixed media (jacob lawrence/matisse inspired in my opinion!) collage, he has been releasing music as fit of body for seven years. fit of body crafts soulful house ballads that draw on freestyle, bell hooks, old school detroit techno, jazz, and southern rap passed through a no wave paradigm. fit of body has previously released work on cgi, dka, ransom note, and his own label, harsh riddims. “black box no cops” is fit of body’s debut 2mr release, named for atlanta hallowed skate grounds, black box. the vinyl release includes a download code.

in 1982, a group of friends deep into post-punk, jazz and dub got together in mad professors studio and lay down their youthful interpretation of a nyc disco cut. their unique take included trombone, vibraphone, piano, and an ital dose of tape delay. they called the song trouble and released two versions (vocal and dub) on their friend tony mcdermott s !drum! label with artwork inspired by russian constructivism. tip! . the group, comprised of justin langlands, chrysta jones, john schofield, tom dixon, and dave killen, decided to call themselves a-team, having no idea that mr.t and co. would make them almost totally ungoogle-able 30 years later. the result of their adolescent studio idealism sounds akin to otherdisco misfits like arthur russell, maximum joy, talking drums and wouldn t sound out of place on legendary nyc label 99 records. remastered with an extended club dub formaximum dance-floor action.

lionsprintcomplete intenthousand practicesthus comeone a mysterious box arrived at the office labelled tsho-drong zimpo. inside were incense sticks, a bubble wrapped dat tape with a telephone number on it. we lit the sticks, ran the dat and a call was made almost immediately.

philippe cohen solal (of gotan project) celebrates the 50th anniversary of summer of love, covering one of its anthems “aquarius / let the sunshine in” of hair the musical which premiered on stage in october 1967. a complex but soothing modern reggae moombathon riddim carried by the ethereal harmonies of legendary jamaican reggae singer horace andy (massive attack, skylarking, ain’t no sunshine...) with a delivering coda sung by an empowering choir.
¡ya basta! records asked two legends of the underground scene, somewhat connected to the spirituality of the song, to remix this take. first with an afro house / deep-house take of the master of the genre @boddhi-satva, and jack of all trades, mashup virtuoso @jstar-1 (remixer of major lazer / dj vadim...) for a retro catchy drum n bass/uk bass remix. finally lazy flow and face-t deliver a dancehall filler of a remix.

ethiopian records aka endeguena mulu’s arcola 12 inch ye feqer edaye arrives in three tracks of fully frontal psychedelic electronic body music. make no mistake, this is club gear as you have never heard it before, a fever-dream rush of ethiopiyawi electronic that sits equally within the crucially current club sounds of gqom, nyege nyege, cargaa and principe as it does with the greatest sides from tribe of colin, zarate_fix, sex tags amfibia and 12th isle.

surface records has never pulled any punches as one of the uks toughest, strangest techno labels, and the 65d mavericks have embodied the same spirit with their charged, lyrically provocative approach. after a lengthy hiatus label and artist are back in action, and sounding as fierce as ever. false prophets is not for the faint hearted an avalanche of thunderous drums and expletive-laden diatribes. cosmic drift is marginally more meditative, but still positively unhinged in its execution. you lost your mind flails around a muddy, punky swamp of deviant sonic behaviour, and immovable (dub) throws one last curveball into the long grass, stripping out the bark without losing the bite of this proudly individual group of techno marauders.

the producer, multi-instrumentalist, dj and record collector gabriel cyr aka teleseen releases 5th album ‘the emotional life of savages via french imprint goldmin music. african rhythms, latin heat and otherworldly electronics collide like neurons, processed through a new york state of mind. the pancontinental sounds are mirrored in his own life, which has oscillated back and forth between various countries. a jazz background combined with a love for house and techno are ingrained in the grooves. also key is the samba, baile funk and mpb that inspired him while living in rio de janeiro, plus the sounds he reabsorbed on returning to nycs club scene.

brilliant new duo from south london gilles peterson bbc radio 6 music. south london electronic duo vtr release their alluring debut ep soul to skin on brixtons dream diary records. the five track ep veers from the melodic to the abstract as sensual lyricism occupies a distinct space amidst spectral sound design, striking a balance between haunting depth and inviting warmth. soul to skin was co-produced by recent r&s records signee afriqua, whose slap ep and chronic cool 12inch out on dream diary brought considerable attention to the label. the final offering on the ep is a soul to skin remix by inxec (crosstown rebels, get physical, cocoon and leftroom and culprit) clash music were quick to premiere soul to skin describing vtrs sound as an entrancing mixture reminincent of those early james blake eps, or even the hushed intensity of portishead.

“madrid fue una ciudad mundial” compiles four of the most important spanish electronic projects from the 80 s. a compilation released in cooperation with a show organised in madrid last may, 18th where aviador dro, flash cero, azul y negro and esplendor geométrico played together for the very first time.
aviador dro offers two unpublished early recordings from 1981. flash cero includes an unreleased song recorded back in 1987. azul y negro collaborates with a demo version of their cult classic “la torre de madrid” from 1981. and esplendor geométrico give us a couple of live tracks recorded in 1989 for the first time available on vinyl.

lena platonos is a greek musician, pianist and music composer. she was one of the pioneers in the greek electronic music scene of the 1980s, and she remains active today. lena was born on the island of crete and grew up in athens.

hmot aka stas sharifullin is siberian-born, moscow-based musician, curator, educator and multi-disciplinary artist from siberia. using modular synthesizer, field recordings and visual programming languages, hmot collects sounds and organizes them into structures, pushing traditional electronic music genres beyond their comfort zones. “permanent imbalance” is his ep debut on the berlin imprint oqko following a single contribution to the label’s “form_1” compilation. structurally, “permanent imbalance” is disorderly and elusive, it’s a techno record which has undergone a gregor samsaesque metamorphosis. embedded with dizzying polyrhythmics, the discontinuity at the heart of the record might also be its central directive – interrupting the ecstatic clubbing experience in favor of a contradictory reality which is impossible to describe with regular rhythms. boldly submitted to the niche of dance music deviations, “permanent imbalance” also reveals techniques directly derived from early institutional electronics and musique concrete. but where others would pile on the layers, sharifullin keeps it trim. these are just some finishing touches enhancing his rickety and multifaceted soundscapes. subject to constant deviations of its own temporality, this music proves to mirror the crisis in which modernity resides – a state of life out of balance which now appears to be permanent as never before.

constantin xenakis work possesses exactly what i really love about intelligent electronic music. its stylishly repetitive, coded, mechanical but, at the same time, very organic and playful. this is how argyris theofilis, also known as zodiac free arts club, explains his fascination with european artist constantin xenakis. born in cairo, xenakis work often includes written script, in particular symbols andcodes of everyday life, traffic signs, alchemy, the zodiac, mathematical and chemical symbols, egyptian hieroglyphics as well as letters from the greek, phoenician, hebrew and arabic alphabets.a balance between human and inhuman that makes his art somehow mystical. after becoming fixated by xenakis, the greek music producer searched and eventually met him for the first time in 2012. after several meetings in paris and athens, they both decided to present structures + codes, a concept album conceived as an homage to the painters vision. each one of the eight songs in the album corresponds to a painting by xenakis, translating its intricate shapes and patterns into spirit-lifting compositions filled with elliptic arpeggios, repetitive drum machines and esoteric melodies in proper kosmische manner. but this is not a mere exercise in style. as xenakis paintings, its music that transcends its own codes to become an esoteric experience. this record should be heard comfortably.

ryuji takeuchi provides instruments of discipline with an ep of noisy, hypnotic tracks, ranging from giddy, stomping, left-field techno to melancholic ambience, the ep’s title ‘one’s sentiment’ provides a thoughtful angle to this at times cacophonous collection, for while they are bristling with noise there is something contemplative about the pieces, expressed in a way that suggests more than one thought trying to take life at the same moment, ryuji finds space for conflicting voices both spatially and in terms of mood, the first three tracks, ‘ambivalence’, ‘sadness’ & ‘sorrow’ crawl with competing elements, synth lines drool over and meld with throbbing kick patterns, anxiety & excitement are tightly wound in focus as tracks build and develop, leaving the listener to navigate these abstract planes, intoxicated, while the final track ‘regret’ is a compelling piece of noisy, ambient minimalism that allows for an austere pause after the eruption of the initial works. it becomes evident that ryuji’s journey as a producer, through periods of hard-techno, deep-minimalism and the more abrasive ventures on huehelix, has created a powerful and nuanced voice that is fully on display in ‘one’s sentiment’.
