as an increasing number of the british producers turn to techno as a source of inspiration, the gritty sound of the uk underground is easily obscured by the polished veneer of continental 4/4 music.
having taken his time to emerge from the shadows, paleman has constructed a musical voice for himself which turns this conundrum on its head by reimagining the skeletal drums and gutteral growls of early dubstep and speed garage as a style of uk techno all of his own. for this youngster, berlin is more of a startpoint than a destination. at only 19, he joins the ever growing base of manchester-based techno producers as the first signing to fulcrum records, a new label started in south manchester by friends sam schorb (aka damu) and adam rogerson.

lv return to hyperdub with a taste of whats to come on their forthcoming south london-meets-south africa album sebenza, due at the end of august. what lv make here is the exciting prospect of music influenced by south african house and kwaito, informed by regular trips out there and sessions with up and coming south african artists such as okmalumkoolkat, ruffest and spoek mathambo, but letting the influences of uk soundsystem music and hip hop bleed naturally into the mix too, creating a genuine hybrid.

sometimes club music doesnt need to be too clever. sometimes all you need is an insistent groove and a hook. allow nuance, subtlety or layers upon layers of carefully sculpted found sounds, sometimes the drive to dance to a piece of music overtakes the rational over thinking and just inspires movement. that is precisely what this trio of original productions from 19 year old brummy, wattville aka matthew evans, does incredibly well to inaugurate sonic router records debut vinyl release.

first up is tabou for the people by sofrito specials featuring l barrabas which twitch edited for his dj sets a couple of years back. the lovely people at sofrito kindly gave permission for it to be included on this release. its a relentlessly driving slab of 4/4 afro funk with horn explosions. next up is the 10th and final track in twitchs cumbia series. the first 8 were released on japans lets get lost label and the missing number 9 is being saved for a future release. colombias cumbia was born out of african influences. this track is based around a sample from colombian cumbia legend andres landero and is an attempt to fuse traditional cumbia sounds with up to date production styles. the end result is a slow motion hypnotic cumbia retaining the haunting melancholia inherent in the original sample. leading the aa side, twitch passed a wild highlife song by ghanas atakoru manu to glasgows super talented auntie flo (whose highly recommended future rhythm machine album recently saw a release) to play around with. auntie flo cut it up and added additional drums and bass to come up with this euphoric modern highlife groover

once again the leeds born, london based producer dazzles with his abstract take on house, garage and everything inbetween. deep in stuttering samples, pirate bass tones and snapping 808s the talented young producer futher develops his colourful style and fuzz laden sounds pallete. eliphino never fails to amaze. always floor friendly, original and boundary pushing.

on their fifth release, back to you goes digging around through analogue sounds and comes back with ample dirt beneath its fingers. this is dusty house that could have originated at any point along the us/european axis as it crosses the atlantic.

limited reissue of a very rare and highly in-demand 1986 12 inch from indian ocean, alias of late great disco legend and sleeping bag founder arthur russell. although russells original version on side a is fantastic in itself, the stunning abstract walter gibbons mix on side b is where its all at. with irrepressible madcap gibbons at the helm, the track mutates into a strangely subversive dancefloor odyssey way ahead of its time which still sounds futuristic today. with a raw sparse experimental sound, this progressive sonic journey rolls along for over 10 minutes pulsating with a jazz-influenced interplay of funk-heavy bongos, stabbing synths, off-the-wall vocals and russells trademark cello. one of the great moments to come out of the vibrant art/disco not disco crossover scene of 80s new york - dont miss your chance to bag a vinyl copy of this obscure gem.

disco mali! sofrito present a unique slice of afro-disco from the celebrated griot, niama makalou, recorded in the late 70s.
descended from a family of griots (traditional malian praise singers), niama makalou moved to france in the mid 70s where she cut this, her one and only vinyl release. at the time paris (like much the rest of the world) was swept up in disco fever, so along with a group of malian musicians the date was set to cut a piece of disco, griot style. the resulting mixture of off kilter hand claps, raw string arrangements, balafon flourishes and bambara vocals combine with a heavy disco groove to produce a one-off piece of cross-cultural dancefloor mayhem.
on the flip daphni (aka caribou) crafts an extended version that distills it into a stripped down and dubbed out groove.

gabriel andruzzi, multi-instrumentalist and core member of dfas beloved the rapture, debuts his solo moniker dj druzz vs. omega mus on his own throne of blood imprint. designed for maximum dancefloor impact, >apeman< reveals new shades of primal funkiness hitherto unexplored by man... the title track thumps along with a swagger in its step, while tambourines, deep toms and simian grunts rattle and shake into rhythmic abandon. meanwhile, audacious, finely-detuned synth acrobatics form the backbone of the track and evoke a sense of careening blindly through the jungle canopy.

romare is a young london to paris transient crate digger, collecting dusty snippets of undead voices and antiquated rhythms. once in his underground lab, these pieces of yesterday are chopped, spliced and reattached to create the sound of tomorrow. this ep explores the connection between the history of african and african-american culture in the form of collage to create musical conversations between the past, present and future.
samples of songs, speeches, interviews, field recordings and films were carefully chosen and rearranged: rhythms from africa are integrated with voices from harlem, conversations about race and identity between writers and ethnomusicologists are constructed, speeches from activists are conjoined with the voices of prisoners. this process of combining pre-existing material has inspired three >meditations on afrocentrism<.
in keeping with black acres genre dodging output, romares merging of traditional rhythms of africa with the contemporary tempos of footwork and house is a bridge between the tradition sound palette of africa and future dance rhythm.

on the flip the >dukes dub< is a subtler more restrained version that makes greater use of effects and surprisingly brings the songs percussive elements to the fore... not quite as direct as its sibling on the a-side but definitely as effective!

theo roars into a fierce, uglier-than-ugly edit, with no let-up for thirteen minutes, when it crashes to a standstill: a hurtling, mesmerizing ride, multi-layered and clustered with synth washes, bleeps and alarms, galloping drums, clattering percussion.burnts shangaan variation is perforce more chilled, lithe, reverberating. the drums are crafted and fatback, with moody vocal interjections and haunting keys, chocka with dub thrills and spills, lethally spiked with bass.

for well roundeds 11th release bristols skinnz drops a trio of infectious and melodic creations that share a kinship with todays garage and funky house sounds whilst standing apart due to their unique character. you may know sam from his other alias baobinga. he is man who commands much respect for his collaborations with people from a wide variety of musical backgrounds and his ability to channel his influences in an unforced and colourful way.
on the skinnz releases so far he has experimented with more garage influenced beats, while retaining his trademark focus on percussive momentum. however these tracks often flow freely across boundaries and genre limits encouraged to evolve in any direction that creates excitement. previous skinnz releases have already appeared on pinchs earwax label and boka records whilst his debut outing was on one of the first compilations of music that might be termed dubstep – the classic >our sound< album on destructive.

local actions seventh vinyl release is the official follow-up to t. williams and terri walkers 2010 anthem >heartbeat<, and comprises three of t. williams heaviest instrumental tracks to date. >break broke< is the sound of williams getting darker, with synths that glow like an overcooked power grid and one of the most ruff-neck drops you will hear anywhere this year. >go in< is for the djs, a palette cleanser that is tailor-made to mix long and deep, but its >analog tour< that is arguably this records stand-out – opening with a two-and-a-half minute intro of acid ambience, electro claps and super-heavy 808 kicks, and climaxing as a full-on 303 hydra.

next up in the sofrito super singles series is the highlife underground ep – celebrating the bassline heavy sound of 80s highlife.
on the a-side we have teamed up with new london producer drumtalk for a remix of ghanas mpese mpese band. initially released in 1986 the original track was an extended medley – the remix balances the swing of the original with heavy bass and chopped chords, bringing the track up to date while respecting the vibe of the original – an intense example of futuristic highlife that bridges the gap between hackney and accra.
the flip sees the sofrito crew present a killer groove courtesy of the canadoes dance band, originally released on the rogers all stars label in 1982. a minor key intro drops into bouncing drums, handclaps and a bubbling bassline that build and build into a deep and unrelenting groove…

altered natives has been making some noise this last year, with his underground smash >raas out<, followed by a remix for hyperdub and a release on martyns, 3024 label. other releases and remixes have followed, including the albums >tenement yard vol 1< and >serial vendetta< on his own eye4eye inprint. >the tenement yard vol 1< are a series of experiments that were conducted in natives norf lungdon laboratory in 2009 fusing house, techno and dubstep combined with natives unique production talents. the third and final vinyl release from altered natives tenement yard volume one, is finally delivered, from the album, thats caught press and djs attention such as, kode9, martyn and paul woolford to name a few. with three more experiments fusing together house, techno and uk funky and is limited to 300 units…

redux drop the first various artist e.p in their history and pull together some of their favourite track-smiths to deliver a selection of dance floor goodies. spanning the globe from london to new york to down under in melbourne, the music trawled on the first in the series all share the same aim… to make you dance.

so we went predominanlty stateside for our last outing, and decided to bring things back home this time. hoya003 is a strictly uk affair. opening up on the a-side is one of rudest producers and djs the uk has going for it. this aint a comment on her manners though, they are as impeccable as her production. after ikonika sent us a zip of some hoya potentials, we just knew >fleas< had to be the one featured on this 12 inch. a more sinister, rolling, emotional jam, it still packs as much as punch as ikonikas dj sets. kicking off the b-side is the homie om unit. now, this guy … this guy. are there any superlatives left to desribe his sonic masterpieces that have rocked too many dancefloors and had as many producers scratching their heads and re-assessing their mix-downs? an instant favourite, >fibonnaci 10< was one of the earliest cuts lined up for a release and when you listen you will see why. this guy. seriously. bringing things to a close, we hand over to one of our favourites from the flourishing cardiff scene. why doesnt monky have more music out? is one of those questions that has been asked too many times for our liking. so much so, we may have to take it upon ourselves to change that. but, for now, just enjoy >hipster<. a killer synth-laden nod to early ukg, but looking forward as opposed to sideways. enjoy.

the new outing on discofil is a mindblowing record on transparent vinyl. its curated by optimo legend jd twitch, a man with, needless to say, truly great taste. expect the best from genres containing words like: punk, wave, synth, beats, post and torch. support from todd terje, soft rocks, cosmo vitelli, dj rocca, chris duckenfield, in flagranti, headman & marius vaaried to name but a few.

mr raoul k and baobab secret take the next step and put out new remixes of >le karantkatrieme peul<. prisme are a belgian duo (nicolas pepinster and yves theys) who started to produce their own material in 2010. they liked the title track so much that they remixed it and sent the result to mr raoul k who instantly fell in love with the melodic and laid back approach they took on it. this lush piece makes a perfect entry into a long night out, promising that every piece will fall into place. the other production crew featured on this release are the iklawa brothers (mzwandile nxasana and sandile magwaza) who run their own label in durban, south africa. they are big fans of mr raoul ks work and have been dropping his tunes in their sets on a regular basis. their remix is a dark, afrobeat driven tune that takes the listener on a long trip into a gloomy world full of surprising musical twists, dramatic changes of mood and impressing string sounds. the last remix is done by mr raoul k himself. he shows a new side of his musical skills. resulting in an epic track that seems to dance on tiptoes around a giant beast. one small step. hesitate. check carefully what happens. do not disturb. just watch in astonishment how it slowly awakes and stretches out to its full glory. a track that is full of hope, but reminds us to keep our feet to the ground to provide a solid stand.

ok … the sad truth is we have been searching for this dat close to 6 years since rabbit in the moons david christophere and san diego native sotero finished the project. both mixes were done around winter 95 / 96. despite excitement around the label at the time, eventually the tracks fell to the wayside under the age-old excuse of >figuring out what to do with them<. meanwhile, knowing a good thing when he heard it, three made a dat copy and cut some actetates to play out. they made their way around a good portion of the earth via himself, some friends and one west coast dj who boldly vowed to just put it out on his own --- off the slate --- if we didnt get our act together. fortunately he didnt, but neither did we because both david and three misplaced the dat copies and sotero never had one!
