john milk grew up in the paris suburb where music at that time was all about hip hop. listening to all the wu tang productions based on analog samples of 60 rhythm and blues, he decided at the age of 18 to build his own studio with analog gears. real to real tape recorder, 70’s microphones, live recording. his idea was to create a raw, groovy sound of his no matter what the other producers were doing. that’s when he met a new crew of musician nuts about 70’s reggae music. getting deep into the jamaican sound of studio one and channel one studios, he decided to found his own record label: ka records. recording live, pressing 10 inch and 7inches, he also performed live, opening for famous jamaican bands such as the abyssinians, the congos or horace andy. his records of deep 70’s jamaican soul were sold in the uk, japan, and most european countries.

stallworth s biography remains a mere sketch, a 22-year-old wife and mother when news anchor bill jacocks saw her perform at the karamu house community theater in cleveland, little else about her is known. years later, word on the street was that stallworth had gotten caught up in the drug scene, but during their brief interaction in 1974, jacocks penned and stallworth delicately performed *questions* parts i and ii, together creating a silky funk masterpiece. the singles elegant a-side is matched with a sensual edit of moans and purrs on the flip. as jacocks focused on his career in broadcasting, music fell by the wayside, but he never quite shook his time with stallworth at agency recordings, saying, *fifteen years later, i moved back to cleveland and started looking for her. i m still looking.*

none of the adjectives mentioned above apply for the albums of don mccaslin s warmth. born in tacoma washington in 1926, don moved to the san jose area during the first year of life. he took a few piano lessons as a child, but it was boogie woogie music that really inspired him. while attending san jose state he formed a band which had piano, guitar, vibes, bass and drums. following his graduation from college, don played music on the weekends and worked as a high school english teacher for fifteen years. then in 1970 he quit his teaching job and moved to santa cruz, making music his main pursuit. in 1971 he was invited to bring a jazz combo to play at a political rally. the event took place in the patio of the 19th century courthouse building, now called the cooper house. the owner told don that he was putting a sidewalk cafe there and invited him to play on opening day. don ended up playing there until the 1989 earthquake ruined the beautiful old building.

this album is another chapter in the ongoing there s-muchmore-to-brazil than-bossa-nova saga. it s filled with disco-eratracks produced for the brazilian domestic marketplace, some of which were hits, others which were quite obscure. what binds them all together - besides their common origins, time period and overall musical approach - is the fact that their reputation has been steadily transcending brazils borders. this has allowed these tunes to find their place on set lists, want lists and in the crates of the world s most discerning djs and tastemakers.

a train formed in shreveport, louisiana, december 1977 and lasted until may 1987. this vinyl lp was first released in july 1979 on the southern star label, which was the name of the studio where it was recorded. in 1978 these six young musicians had almost no studio experience when they set up and recorded 6 self-penned originals and three songs written by close friends.

the mighty pearstine -perk- badger cut a handful of sides for his own hit sound (and hit bound) and the local miami wax-wel labels in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including a lowfidelity attempt at the anthemic do your stuff. a few years later, perk took another stab, enlisting the help of arnold albury s the rising suns, a major force in henry stone s tk operation. the results were raw, magical, heavy-hitting funk. it is debatable whether or not the reworked single ever saw distribution, but it would become his closest thing to a hit in 2014 when it found its way from a deep cut on numeros eccentric soul: the outskirts of deep city to an international nike ad campaign. finally issued as it was intended, on a bright replica suncut label with bottom-heavy refurbished sound.

after waiting 3 long years, and finally getting the multi track session to do a b side, im proud to present the star blazers cover version of the masterpiece danger zone which was originally done my midnight express. many should be familiar with detroit producer recloose, while back in new zealand he assembled a band who called them selves star blazers (an ode to the 70s legendary japanimation series and a big hit on bostons tv38.. indeed recloose is from massachusetts) and they recorded a few cover tunes.upon hearing this i knew it was special. while most modern covers miss the mark, purely emulating and sounding like a cheap imitation, leaving me wanting to just play the original. they flip the tempo, swing and vibe, straight up owning this and making it their own.
